Pours reddish copper with a lasting off-white head. Lacing sticks.

The smell is of caramel in the "red" style, nuts, light toast and mild floral notes.

The taste is of caramel candy - very malt-forward. A touch of light touch and a herbal/floral hop presence balances out in the finish. The finish is pleasantly long.

It is medium-bodied and very smooth.

An enjoyable, easy-drinking, malty, but well-balanced in the finish, red ale. I like how it starts malty but ends with a tasty hop presence. Nice!

12oz bottle poured into Pint Glass

As a Wisconsinite, this was one I had to try. Famous since 1848, the year WI became a state!

A- Amber in color with a very creamy 2 finger head with excellent retention and lacing.

S- Extremely malty with toffee notes

T- Follows nose nicely, BIG maltiness, buttery flavor and subtle hop notes to balance things out.

M- Silky smooth with a medium body. Nice carbonation. Has a nice oily mouth feel that coats well.

O- Definitely a malt lovers ale! A very nice offering. Will purchase again and recommend a try.

Reviewed from tasting notes.

Semi-clouded deep amber color with a minute's worth of head that pulls back to a 2mm lid, minimal lacing.

Smells / tastes of toasty bread, biscuit malt and *tons* of mineral hardness. Finish is not very extended, but it does contain a decent amount of earthy / tea-like hopping. Medium-light body, medium-heavy carbonation.

Mostly memorable for all the alkaline mineral bite in it.

Interesting single found at Timer's, looks like a retro new-old beer.
Brewed in Glendale, WI, so apparently a Sprecher contract brew.

The label could really use a redesign, as there are 7-8 different fonts cluttering things up. If it's a 19th century beer, give it a 19th century look, not a food product label. /End design critique

Looks alright when poured, hazy reddish copper with suspended micro-sediment, seems to retain a head for a long while. Dripping lace all over in the glass.

Smells sweet and malty, slightly buttery and biscuity.

Taste has a bit of floral hop bitterness in the mix, otherwise full on toasty English malts in the buttered biscuit realm. Medium bodied, slippery feel. Dry aftertaste with a very light residual bitterness. Malt forward and pretty typical.

Not real sure how the "retro" angle fits in here, as it tastes pretty much like every generic craft amber ale i've ever drank.

I let it warm up a bit out of the fridge first. Then poured it with a decent, foamy, thick, creamed colored head that quickly subsides and a little lace. Color is a clear orange amber. Aroma is fairly basic, but not bad, a little malt, caramel, hop, and hint of toffee. Flavor's about the same. Body is ok and so is carbonation plus some immediate alcohol warming. Finish is like flavor with a bit of fruitiness at the very and and is medium in length. Just another beer where somebody's trying to make a buck.

Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #50 (March 2011):

Extreme Old World retro beer has been reincarnated with ties to the West Bend Brewing Co., which was established in 1848 the same year that Wisconsin became a state. Tawny amber shows bubbles, making for a very creamy lace. Malty nose goes very heavy on the toffee and, within that, heavy on the butter. Silky smoothness meets a full-ish body. Big maltiness through- out ... yeah, this ale is malt forward, to say the least. Buttery flavor is laid on pretty thick, yet there is just enough hops to pull the palate away from the point of no return. Very malty finish of toffee and light warming alcohol. A malt lover’s dream here.

12 oz bottle poured into a Sierra Nevada imperial pint. 6.3% ABV, Skewed numbers printed on the neck.

A - This amber is a little bronzed with an accompanying, dulling haze in the beer. A two-finger off-white head has good staying power and decent lace left around the glass.

S - Toasted amber and Münich malts with a small bit of caramel sweetness woven in. The label says, "Brewed with the finest mineral waters." I don't know that I'd go as far as "finest" but the aroma is rich with mineral hardness. Earthy hops balance.

T - More earthy hop presence pulls through in the flavor. Noticeable right away are the light American citrus grapefruit bitterness and Willamet-like dry leaf/mulch combo. Dry roasted amber malts and biscuity nuances back it up with a definite mineral kick.

M - Dry and hard with a lingering bite from both the bitter hops and mineral hardness. Medium-light bodied.

D - An average beer all around, it's not offensive but even with the flavor nuances it's got, it falls into the sea of other Amber Ales without creating any ripples. A standard brew.
