Update 1/30/15

Look: very pale and clear with tons of carbonation.

Smell: honey, pear. Very sweet.

Taste: honey, black pepper, fennel, lemongrass, white grapes, hay, very mild malt. Could probably pass as a wine (to a non-oenophile, at least), but also clearly comes across as a saison.

Feel: silky smooth, despite being fizzy from carbonation. Light body, dry finish.

Overall: this beer has taken a turn for the better since the first time I tried it. What was before a fairly run-of-the-mill saison with some wine elements has turned into something special. I think if someone took this and dry-hopped it it would be bonkers. Worth picking up if you happen to somehow spot some.

Whole Foods exclusive.

Described as a farmhouse ale made with Sauvignon Blanc must from Margerum Wine Company and aged in oak barrels.

Pours a hazy golden-yellow with a foamy white head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small patches of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, yeast, spice, earth, white grape, and slight wood aromas. Taste is much the same with tangy grain, yeast, and fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is an interesting blend of beer and wine ingredients, but the combination comes through better in the smell in my opinion.

Type: 22oz. bottle
Glass: Trappist Westvleteren XII glass
From: Whole Foods in Hillcrest (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $10.99
Purchased: Aug. 15, 2014
Consumed: Aug. 23, 2014
Misc.: Gold foiling on bottle top/neck

Poured a honey, straw, hazy color with 1-to-2 fingers of rocky white head, which thinned out fairly quick. Average spotty lacing long the sides of the glass. Below average retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 3.63)

Smelled boozy, skunky malts, corn, grass, honey, bread, cereal, green grapes and green apple. (Smell - 3.38)

Tasted better than the smell with the similar characteristics. Got green apple, kiwi, green grapes, grassy notes, cereal, corn, cloves, faint bubblegum, some oakiness, tropical notes and some unknown spices. (Taste - 3.75)

Light body. Thin texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, slightly fruity finish. Crisp and refreshing. (Feel - 4.13)

This beer had its moments. The good news is that the taste and feel was the best part. Got better as it went down. (Overall - 3.75)
