Pours a beautiful clear tangerine copper with an antique white two-finger head. Head retention doesn't linger. Foam laces the glass as the beer is being drunk. There is a ripe fruit and pine nose. Candied fruit and pine are prevalent at the top. The beer finishes floral hoppy, but with a pleasant, mild, almost sweet bitterness, if you will. Wonderful beer. The best IPA I've ever had the pleasure to drink. What's more, I only live a half hour from the brewery/brew pub.

This is one of my favorite beers at Figueroa Mountain Brewing Company. I didn't used to like IPA's until I had the Hoppy Poppy and their Double IPA (the Hurricane Deck), and now I drink IPA's quite often. There is a very high demand for this beer, so the only downside is keeping it on tap since it is most of the regulars' favorite. Luckily they also bottle it now. I highly recommend the Hoppy Poppy to all of my friends I bring to the brewery for their first time.

As the craft beer scene in my locality evolves from the under $5 offerings towards the over, it seems this nicely hoppy, very drinkable brew with the toasty nutty flavor from the California golden poppy seeds in it, has been lost in the shuffle. I don't have this brew in front of me right now to get technical about it, but wish I did!

Stopped off here after a wedding, heard from a local in Solvang about it. This tap house is about 1 mile away from Pea Soup Andersons off the 101 in Buellton. It's about 1/2 mile down a very non-commercial looking road so don't turn around, if you hit the winery, go back.

A: good straw color with nice carbonation. This white head and served pretty cold.
S: Nice piney citrus nose, not too overwhelming but you can tell it's nicely hopped.
T: Crisp, dry, citrusy with a light bitterness in finish. Not much of a malt presence which is fine with me. I like these kind.
M: light and perfectly carbonated

Overall, this IPA is very good. I got a growler to go and will enjoy with friends. It definitely offers the WCIPA signature fresh hoppy taste.

Thanks to rau71 for this extra in a recent trade. Bonus points not only for a brew I'd never heard of, but a new brewery, too. 22 oz. bottle divvied up twice.

Pour is standard orange with a dash of light red thrown in around the margins. Nice citrus burst in the nose, along with an odd (not unpleasant odd, just odd) seedy smell. Like my bird seed after a hot day. Excactly that. Mr. Poppy, I presume. Certainly interesting.

Hoppy Poppy IPA isn't immediately classifiable as 'good' or 'bad' but 'interesting, I need another sip'. The poppy definitely sticks to the fore, a sunflower-like kick without the salt. Hard water, almost seltzer-like in the middle, a quality I've never tasted in a beer before. Nice hop chop riles the aftertaste, bit of citrus but more simple hops scalding the teeth & gums with second-degree burns. Wicked. Grabbing the glass more frequently than I should, this won't last out an episode of River Monsters.

This IPA kicks like hell & has a lovely, strange up-front taste that distinguishes it from the ho-hum pretty good IPAs dotting the landscape like a pox. This ain't one of them. Another first-class, excellent California IPA.

Great name! I had this at an Irish pub in SLO, so on to the beer:

Copper orange colored, inch thick head on the pour which retains fairly well. The nose was a great surprise. It was intense, but unlike the pilsner I had earlier in the night, was much more attractive to my nostrils. It's a big burst of hops, tea-like hops. It takes me back years when I had my first IPA, which was from Stone.

The taste is a borderline 4/4.5. Once again, the hops are explosive. Also joining the hops are bits of a caramel base, tea, and "green" hops. It's medium bodied, bitter, and powerful.

Some IPA's are balanced, some are just hoppy. Hoppy Poppy leans towards the latter, and does a good job at that. Keep your eyes peeled for this.

As others have already said, this is an excellent CA IPA. Pours a beautiful copper orange with a 3 inch sticky thick head with legs. Very smooth mouthfeel, kinda light bodied but the malt is balanced well with the grapefruit/citrusy simcoe/cascade/centennial hops. I don't really know what poppy flavor is supposed to translate as. I honestly think the just added some seeds for the catchy name. Either way, it's the best IPA of the smaller Santa Barbara area breweries. Def worth a try

Was right next door to the brewery, but couldn't slip away from my wine-tasting obligations to avail myself of their wares. A few months later and I'm happy for a second chance to taste one of their beers. Poured from a 22oz bomber into my Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Clear, Princeton orange liquid supports three fingers of papaya whip foam which forms a rocky lasting head. Thick soapy lacing; superior retention.

Citris laden hop aromatics suggest oranges, yuzu, and grapefruit at first. A sweetness comes through as well which is like an especially floral honey with a tiny hint of passion fruit.

Moderately bitter palate entry with a peppery herbaceous hop kick. A biscuity backbone of malt with hints of fine caramel and cotton candy emerges as well but the flavor profile remains dry throughout. Finishes with hints of earth, forest floor, and cocoa thanks to the addition of poppy seeds - though a delicate fruitiness never abates. Excellent balance. Very good.

Soft, lightly carbonated, and zesty mouthfeel.

Very drinkable, well crafted, unique without being ostentatious...would go well with a good cheese and some olives or with a meal from the region (the beer has a certain refinement suggestive of wine country).

Mostly clear organish yellow with a creamy off-white head that dissapates pretty quickly. Nice lacing.

Nice strong citrus/grapefruit aroma with sweet grainy malts. Pretty floral too, and really pops out of the glass in the aroma dept, nice. I think I might like a tad more complexity to that aroma, but I appreciate the strenght.

Similar to the taste, but the malts seem to come through a little more than the hops, which isn't as good in my book. The malts are pretty caramel foreward too, and not particularly complex. The hops are there too though, but are kind of basic in the citrusy dept. Pretty balanced, but not much of a hop showcase really.

Medium to light body with moderate carbonation. Pretty creamy and smooth, but with a good bite too. Kind of lingers around on the tongue for a while too, in a sort of chalky way.

Not bad, but pretty midde of the road, balanced IPA with no real spotlight on anything. I tend to prefer those that focus a little more on hop complexity, or at least a little more malt depth if the two are even. This is just kind of "meh".

Pours a clear copper color with a tight, white head that leaves chunks of lacing.

Smells of bright citrus and tropical fruits.

Tastes of the bright hops upfront followed by some malt sweetness. Hops lead off with grapefruit, pineapple, and melon with a touch of grass on the backend. Not particularly bitter. Hops blend into a little caramel sweetness along with toffee and toasted bread notes. Fairly balanced overall. I do pick up a bit of earthiness as the beer warms, which I assume is from the poppy seeds.

Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a quite good IPA and has me more interested in this brewery.

Poured an orange amber color with 1-2 fingers of off-white head. A few spots of off-white lacing on the sides. Average retention on the top on the way down.

Smelled a nice mix whiff of floral and citrus hops, which all came together nicely. Sweet floral hops led the way. Citrus hops seemed to be tangerine and orange more than anything else.

Tasted pretty close to the nose, but not quite as good. Got those sweet floral hops, although not as pronounced. So I guess Cascade hops. Also orange and tangerine citrus hops.

Light body. Thin texture. Average carbonation. Long, slightly bitter finish.

A really nice IPA, which almost tasted more like an APA. Nice deviation from the normal IPA.

A lovely classic amber color in the pint nonic-- another plus for California Kebab, which serves even $3 happy hour beers in nice glasses. A frothy head and lingering lacing.

A lovely mouthful of hops at first gulp. Sharp and thoroughly refreshing. I'd call this a Pale Ale and it would be an excellent example. A svelte body, mouthfilling hoppiness, and the bitterness backs off as the spicy aromas melt down your nose. A little of the biscuit taste, just enough malt to balance the hops, and an elegant quaff.

I suspect hop heads will whinge about the lack of bitterness, so just enjoy it. A nice surprise, and one of the best Pale Ales I've had this year. I wasn't so crazy about their "Danish Red," but Figueroa may be a newcomer worth checking out.

Appearance: A good looking pour, with a clear amber color and a finger's worth of head; decent retention and lacing

Smell: Floral and citrusy, though it has a tropical fruit salad character to it and is not as bitter as I would have expected given the hop bill

Taste: Opens with a graham cracker malt flavor that is buttressed by the hop bill; bitterness builds through mid-palate, though the tropical fruit elements of papaya, star fruit and melon dominate; nicely balanced in the finish with the poppy seeds adding another dimension (though maybe it is my imagination, as I love poppy seed pastries)

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate to high carbonation

Overall: If you are looking for another West Coast IPA that is a citrus bomb, this beer is not for you; if you are intrigued by a beer that takes the style in a subtle, but different, dimension, this beer is worth a look

Thanks to my bowling partner Chris for this one.

App- A very clear looking dark Orange with some really sturdy amber tinge. A nice two finger head formed and stuck around for a bit and then fell to a good mix of cling and lace.

Smell- A pretty standard IPA without being too overly malty. Had some good citrus notes and even brought a bit of earthy dampness to the backend. I got a tinge of something like a dough or bread and I want to say its the poppy but I know thats a stretch.

Taste- It was a very nice and almost small IPA. Had a nice upfront hoppy flavor with a good backing mild citrus and malt combination. The "extra" doughy flavor carried over from the nose and added a small other layer.

Mouth- A wet medium body with a pretty filling body to it. A very nice carbonation level with some good bubbles and a nice citrus layer remained.

Drink- A tasty beer. This was a nice gift from a buddy for winning a bowling bet. I would like to have this again and now I am excited to try the Brown Ale I have at home from this brewery.

Brought back from the source by my brother, thanks for the opportunity. Pours a crystal clear deep copper color with a stingy white head that dissipates quickly but does manage to leave some lace. The nose is filled with wonderful aromas of citrus and pine. Tangerine, grapefruit and resin boldly topping a base of caramel and brown sugar. The taste hits with a bit of bitter pine resin initially but the sweet sugary malt brings everything back into balance quickly. Long lingering grapefruit and apricot in the finish. Medium body with a sweet resinous mouthfeel and a moderate level of carbonation. Nice, simple, easy drinking IPA. I didn't expect this to be so good from a brewery I'd never heard of, I probably should have shared this with Todd. ;)

I'm feelin' quite well on this one, my peeps. Not overly juicy like Gallagher smashing a watermelon, and not overly bitter like your girl watching Twilight. It's fresh, clean, has a nice balance of citrus and bitter... It's not perfect like Emily Ratajkowski in a 2 piece, but more so like her after kicking a football around the pitch: you know you still would.

On-tap at The Pub Beavercreek, Beavercreek, OH

A: The beer is crystal clear light amber in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high white head that died down but has very good retention properties and consistently left a thin head covering the surface and lots of lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of pine resin hops are present in the nose.
T: Like smell, the taste is quite hoppy and has a strong amount of bitterness along with notes of pine resin hops and slight hints of caramel.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very bitter so if you are looking for something that is assertive without tasting overly piney this is a good selection.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy bone colored head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus zest, herbal hops, and alcohol. Taste is much the same along with some peppery flavors. There is a mild hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and easy to drink.

Consumed October 16th, 2012 in a Samuel Adams fancy-schmansy pint glass at a starting temp of 50 degrees F.

Beer pours a brilliantly clear light copper. A two finger off-white head remains long after the pour. Creamy head texture, nice sheeting.

Aroma - some caramel malt evident, mingled with floral, grassy hops. Trace of citrus. Aroma is fairly tame. Some agitation reveals a disagreeable skunky odor.

Flavor is interesting. Some muted bready and caramel malt up front, followed by a significant herbal , piny bitterness after the swallow. Though the beer is brewed with poppy seeds, I cannot pick out a flavor that corresponds. Nice IPA, sort of like a spicier SNPA.

Mouthfeel is medium with a touch of creaminess and chewiness. Some carbonation bite and tingle. Fairly long-lasting dryness is nice: not overpowering.

A solid IPA, but nothing spectacular. The bar is so high in this style it takes a real miracle to stand out from the crowd. In 2000, this might have been a game changer.

Pours a glowing, candy-coated tangerine; like liquid orangettes. A head rises and falls, but there's some nice lacing alongside. Very clear. Solid start.

Smell is big and blooming -- massive waves of papaya lead the way, with jackfruit, honeydew melon, and the slightest suggestion of halva rounding out the nose. Lovely.

Taste is a bit more astringent than the nose, but not unpleasant. A bit of alcohol slips through, and there's a constant drying, almost mineral sensation. Yuzu, agave, and quinine flavors wash around, but it never quite comes together. Points off here.

Mouthfeel starts out foamy and rich, although the carbonation, as I travel through the glass, noticeably drops). The beer feels thin; I'm reminded of Golden Road's Point The Way IPA, and not in a good way. Still, it never becomes cloying, which can happen with IPAs at this strength. It seems like the issues come more from the mash schedule than the carbonation.

Overall, the beer's a solid pick. Are there better options out there? Sure. That being said, there's far more good than bad going on here. I'm interested in seeing what's next from the folks at Figueroa Mountain.

Another beer in the flight of beers I had @ Figueroa Mountain on Labor Day weekend.

Review is from notes

A: The beer is a bright copper orange, clear, with a healthy half inch of white head.

S: Nice scents of tropical fruits, grapefruit, touch of pineapple, as well as some pine needles.

T: Flavors of Caramel malt, slight buttery quality in the middle, with a mild dry finish. Nice clean mineral quality as well.

M: average heft in the mouth feel, lightly carbonated.

O: Good. After have all of the beers Figueroa Mountain had to offer, this is higher on the list of some others, as it's not too weak, or too much. As stated in some other reviews, I've been able to have this a few times over since this review over at Instant replay, which has been great, since Buellton is 2 hours from me, and no bottles of this brewery's beers can be found locally yet, and they are easy to drink a pint or two of.

Poured from a bomber into a chalice.

A: Clear, brassy golden color with over one finger of off-white foam head. Moderate lacing remains on the glass.

S: Hop-forward but not overpowering, with obvious grapefruit citrus, pine, and savory spice. Clean lines make for mild qualities, although they make a fairly tight and cohesive package.

T: Begins barely off-dry, with dense floral and berry hops aromatics and bright carbonic acidity. Grain is more evident in the middle, distinctly rye-like, peppery-sharp and drying on the palate. Pepper and berry flavors extend into the finish where restrained bitterness does not linger long.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, slightly resinous on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: This IPA enjoins archetypal qualities with an experimental ingredient to good results. It is molded in the new West Coast form, with less back-end bitterness a la Alpine IPAs. Balance is maintained in a way that does not lead one to think that the brewer has a revolutionary agenda when it comes to dry-hopping, but it is tasty nonetheless.
