Part of the series of bottled beers that La Cumbre is now putting out fairly frequently, I had this beer on tap.

The beer came in a Nonic pint glass with a thick, cream-colored, chewy head. The beer was amber brown and transparent. It looked beautiful in the glass.

As I smelled the beer, I found myself searching for the rye character, but I wasn't getting much of it. Mostly, I got a lot of hoppiness, particularly of the resinous, piney nature. I did detect a slight spiciness that may have been the rye, but I also thought the hops might be providing that note.

Drinking the beer was much more of a pleasure, it's just a damn good beer. Lots of fruity, citrusy hops are present and lead to a sweet and creamy finish. There's some sweet malt adding good body and the creamy mouthfeel and only subtle hints of rye adding earthiness and spice. The beer is mildly bitter at the finish as well, but it sort of dances with the sweet creaminess to add an intriguing combination.

As I've said, I enjoyed this beer, but I didn't get as much rye character as I'd like. The beer seemed more like an IPA than a red, but hell I' ain't complaining.

Alright now. A rye beer. Don't see many of those.

Looks great off the pour. Minimal head though. Nose is resin heavy. Flavor is good. A smooth resin ride on this one too, with spiced tones. Pretty easy to drink. More of a smooth ride than a punch in the mouth. A good intro to the brewery. Up next, Project Dank!

Poured from a bomber into a Prairie Teku glass.

Appearance: An almost cranberry-red beer with hints of orange. Translucent, without a large head. It disappears quickly, is a pale eggshell/white, and remains merely as a thin crown around the edge. Leaves some thin lacing behind.

Smell: Earthy, herbal and spicy from the rye. Hops come through prominently, but not overwhelmingly. Floral, with some tropical fruits in the background.

Taste: Citrusy, bitter hops come through most prominently. Spicy, grainy malts provide a solid backbone. Some burnt toast quality to the malts too. The rye is subtle, but it's there. The bitter burnt toast sticks around on the finish quite a while.

Mouthfeel: Sticky, and lingers in the mouth for quite a while. Carbonation isn't bracing, and is actually on the lower side.

Overall: A solid beer. Not mind blowing, but definitely tasty. Might be the one rye beer I've had where I can definitely distinguish it from a beer brewed without rye. And it's really gorgeous, this shade of red/orange is really pretty. Another great offering from La Cumbre.
