A malted magic hop bomb. Rich caramel and toasted malts team up with flaked rye and march to the beat of a big but balancing bitterness only to be overtaken by an onslaught of American hop aroma and flavor. You want a tame and subservient, spineless beer that takes orders well and doesn’t challenge anything or anyone? This ain’t it!

Their best beer on today, at the source.. Rye comes through on top of mostly malt. Hops are there and almost get in the way. Only tinge of red colour.

look --- super foamy and basically sprayed out of the can - 2 finger head but dissipated quickly - amber color - slight reddish hue - small foam ring and some lacing - not great retention
smell --- super strong mango, pineapple, pine, juniper, malt, caramel, and red funk - very pungent - i would buy a candle if it were made of this scent - very appealing
taste --- strong bitter bite at first then a blast of rich malty caramel and rye - tropical fruits and some pine come through - really sweet on the caramel / malt side - this one is so powerful it is approaching the flavor of an imperial red - dries out a bit at the end and am left with some charred twig flavors and spice
feel --- medium bodied and pretty oily / slick / carbonation is pretty weak after a few minutes
overall --- I really liked this one - I am a fan of reds that have a punch and are powerful in the red malt and hops - this is more of a Red IPA with so many hops - I would definitely pick this up again - La Cumbre hasn't disappointed me yet - very nice

Red Ryeot looks exactly as I'd hoped for. Bold and pretty clean (I can distinguish my fingers through the glass) burnt orange bordering ruby in the vein of an Irish Red color, capped with a cream colored foam. Bubbles rise in single file lines to support the sturdy coverage, and it laces like spray texture on the sides of the glass.

Tangerine jumps out of the glass as if it's been freshly squeezed. A pleasant honey and caramel balance out the juicy spray, and a biscuit crust lays the base for it all.

The flavors follow in similar fashion. Tangerine is still the front runner here, and the sweet bread sops up those syrupy goods. And here comes the rye. A nice spicy cracker finish.

Red Ryeot has just the right feel to compliment it's entirety. Smooth and even a little slick at first. But then a tingle from the carbonation and spice from the rye. It finishes bitter with a residual coating every nook and crannie of the mouth.

Even canned 3 months ago, this is fantastic. Would be a regular for me as I'm pretty much in love with anything that executes the use of rye this well. Cheers.

Pint can poured into Duvel tulip. CO08/16/18, BB11/14/18 on outer rim of bottom of can. Cost $2.50.

Appearance - Pours big offwhite head that retains its shape extremelywell, with long retention and monsterous lacing clinging in big sticky patches. Deeply hazy dark red-brown/mahogany body. 4.5

Smell - Almost nothing but strong dank hop. 4

Taste - Very grassy with a bit of sweetness underneath, not enough to truly balance it, but enough to take the harsh edge off somewhat. Can't even taste the alcohol or much of anything else under the stacks of grassy hop landing on your tongue. 4

Mouthfeel - A little too astringent and harsh, but thankfully without the off taste characters that usually accompany a brew this unforgiving. That makes this perfect for when you want this sort of kick in the mouth. 4

Overall - Absolutely not a session beer. This is the sort of beer you get when you're craving a Koolaid Man-looking beer mug to burst through your wall and drop kick you in the mouth with harsh hops. Definitely a mood beer, or something that might pair well with certain foods, given its extreme character. I personally didn't find it particularly enjoyable right now, but I can see its potential in the right situation. 4

A: Pours a nearly opaque yet still clear very dark deep reddish brown in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising quickly along the edges of the glass and moderate deep garnet red + ruby red + chestnut brown colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense foamy tan head that very slowly reduces to a medium to large patch of thick film surrounded by a large patch of thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of spicy rye + caramel + toasted malts with light amount of caramel sweetness underneath slightly stronger than moderate aromas of pine + earthy hops.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of caramel + biscuit + toasted malts with moderate amounts of spicy rye malts and a light amount of caramel sweetness. That is followed by slightly stronger than moderate flavors of pine + earthy + citrus/grapefruit pith hops which impart a moderate amount of bitterness which fades away leaving a lingering caramel malt + spicy rye flavor lingering.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a pretty well balanced profile between the hoppy bitterness and malty sweetness. Nice presence of rye in both the aroma + flavor and the combonation of malt flavors pair well with hop flavors.

A: The beer is very dark red when viewed from afar, but when held up to the light it is clear dark red in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high light beige head.
S: Light aromas of spicy rye are present in the nose along with underlying notes of caramel and toasted malts.
T: The taste follows the smell, except that the initial taste is rather malty and the finish has a bit of spiciness from the rye.
M: It feels medium-bodied and smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has a good balance between the rye and and the standard malts as well as an exceptionally smooth mouthfeel.

Appearance: A massive head forms from one of the longest bubble shows ever; the full three (almost four) fingers topping the burnt orange liquid; the head doesn't fade and the lacing is bold

Smell: Malty and spicy, with caramel and rye tones; bready underneath, with the piney hops adding another element

Taste: Caramel forward, with the malt underpinning, it doesn't take long for the rye bread flavor to develop; through the middle, piney hops take over; all three elements of the brew coalesce into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: My recent trip through the La Cumbre beers has yielded mixed results but this has proved to be worthy as the grand finale; while I tend to shy away from hoppy beers with a big malt base, this one really worked for me

Thanks, M_chav, for the opportunity

Thanks BK! Canned on 2/27/18. Rusty red brown color with some hues of mild coffee, with a tall head of egg foam yellow, 3 fingers, and destroys the glass as it recedes.

Beautiful aromas of both caramel malts and wonderful citrus-lemon-calm pine hop. Lots of delicious sweet malt aromas. Gorgeous nose.

Flavor does not err on overly sweet or overly bitter. Very nice. Rye grains, slight biscuit, sweet caramel malt, followed by citrus, pine, polite hop resins, slight earth, and a finish of bright fruits. Lingering caramel remains. Incredible flavor.

Feel is semi-creamy, nicely carbonated, slight starch, nice hop resins.

Overall, a way better beer than I was expecting. Not only could I tick off New Mexico, but I had a killer beer while doing it. Recommended.

16 fl oz can nabbed at a Trader Joe's in Denver, CO.

APPEARANCE: Body is a clear vibrant amber, clean and filtered. Head is ~8cm in height and lasts a good ~8 minutes. Off-white head colour. Robust head consistency.

AROMA: Toasted malts, amber malts, caramalt, biscuit, floral hop aromatics, hints of resinous hops. Seems balanced in terms of malty sweetness versus hop bitterness. I'm missing rye malt's signature spiciness; I wouldn't know this was a rye malted beer in a blind tasting.

Aromatic intensity is average. Suggests a very pleasant amber ale with a nice robust malt backbone and plenty of hop flavour.

TASTE: Resinous, slightly oily, and floral in terms of hop profile - which blends nicely with the beer's robust malt backbone comprised of dominant amber malt in addition to biscuit and caramalt. I'd assume some 2-row is in there too, but I honestly don't find the titular rye malt; there's no subtle spiciness.

Rather well balanced, with its one-two punch of malts and hops coalescing into a gestalt whole of a beer that exceeds the sum of its parts. The amber malt one expects to anchor a red ale is there in spades and the hop profile is effective.

TEXTURE: Smooth, slightly dry owing to its toasty taste, aptly medium-bodied, well-carbonated, and not unrefreshing. Not chewy, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, or otherwise problematic.

OVERALL: It's a lovely red ale from La Cumbre even if it isn't quite unique or special and doesn't commit as much to its ostensible rye malt as its name would have one expect. Highly drinkable and absolutely a beer I'd buy again though it doesn't stand out enough to warrant widespread attention from discerning drinkers. Those interested in a balanced no-nonsense amber ale with a pleasant hop profile need look no further, but it could be improved in terms of depth of flavour, intricacy, and commitment to rye malt as well as hop pungency. Well worth trying in any case.
