Growler from GHB. Thanks! This RIS was apparently aged in a mix of syrah and pinot noir barrels.
Appearance: Inky opaque black topped by a clinging tan head.
Smell: Roasted malt and unsweetened cocoa, slightly ashy and charred, with big dark fruit notes. Anise, molasses and a touch of fudge-like sweetness come out as it warms.
Palate: Molasses, anise and roasted malt up front. Dark fruit, bittersweet chocolate and oak pop out more and more as the beer hits room temperature. Less charred than the nose suggests, nonetheless it's a fairly bitter beer from heavy hopping. While it's not astringent, I do wish the hops were dialed back a bit to give the beer a sweeter finish. The body is silky and full, while sweetness is only moderate.
Overall: This was a really nice first attempt at a barrel aged stout. Has an oldschool RIS feel to it, reminiscent of Old Rasputin or Storm King, but with added depth from barrel aging.
