Poured from a 750 ML bottle into a tulip. Bottle from 2007.

a - Pours a murky, mahogany brown color with one finger of white head and moderate carbonation.

s - Smells of sour fruits, especially cherries, dark fruits, oak, wine, some funk, and caramel malts. Very enjoyable.

t - Tastes of sour dark fruits, roasted malts, caramel malts, oak, earthy malts, wine, and maybe a hint of chocolate.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation.

d - A pretty good flanders ale. I thought it smelled amazing and had some great sour fruit and wine to it. Would definitely have again. (574 characters)

So...saw this on the shelf at the LCBO for $14.00....I couldn't resist. Couldn't read the bottle...so I didn't know what it was until I could look it up.

a-pours a very cloudy reddish amber colour with a nice head.

s-sour cherries, hoppy bitterness, mild bready notes...

t-WOW...sour cherries punch you in the face, some hoppy flavours come through on subsequent tastes....uhm...not getting alot of sweetness that one might associate with a higher abv beer. Very satisfying.

m-Hmm....mouthfeel was thicker but alcohol wasn't as prominent as you would expect.

d-very drinkable...cost is prohibitive though...LOL (615 characters)

Bottle is different than the picture. Pours with small head that quickly recedes. Nose is a terrific blend of oak, sourness, and cognac.

Taste is sour, a little sweet, oaky, and vinuos. A smooth, not overpowering sour ale. Tastes great with these pork chops. (262 characters)

Bottle from the LCBO, shared with the group. 750ml into some tulips. Bottled Nov 2010, Lot 1.

Pours a murky reddish brown, with a light tan head. Light lacing and mild retention. Nose of sour cherries, light malts and spicing. Prevalent piercing sour notes nonetheless. Taste has some tart cherries, with a big woody balance. Light tannic character and some green apple. Spicing does well to come in midmouth, and even the the alcohol content, none is felt. Some tartness, lightly puckering - some acetic. Nice refreshing feel, and it was a good idea to split this one. Truly the first Flanders red I've ever enjoyed, very good stuff. (635 characters)

2005 Vintage. Pours out a dark brownish red with a lively tan bubbly head. Some speckles and clumps of lace clung to the glass as I drank it. Aroma is full of tart cherries and woody notes. There was some sweetness as well adding a touch of balance. The taste is similar with tart cherries and woody oak notes dominating. There is a light sweetness in the middle before the dry sour woody finish. Soft carbonation. Easy drinking for the style and quite refreshing. A good all around sour beer. (493 characters)

750 mL bottle from the LCBO; bottled in December 2011. I've never tried (let alone reviewed) a sour before, which was really my main reason for picking this bottle up in the first place.

Pours a muddy brownish-amber colour, opaque with haze. Not a lot of head here - the scant quantity of off-white foam that was generated from the pour fizzles away within a minute, but leaves behind a ring of lacing. Basically looks like a glass of unfiltered apple juice/cider. The aroma is, perhaps unsurprisingly, on the tart side - apple cider again comes to mind, along with malt vinegar, sour cherries and oaked California Chardonnay.

The flavour is unlike any beer I have ever tried previously, and pretty enjoyable if I do say so myself. Tart flavour with a wide array of fruity notes brushing the palate - cherries are the most prominent, but I am also able to pick out lemon and Granny Smith apple. Combined with the acetic acid, the whole profile has a bit of a Chardonnay-mixed-with-vinegar vibe - which, having read that line over again after typing it, sounds much less appealing than it actually tastes. The tartness is prominent (especially to my unaccustomed tongue), but there is enough caramel malt sweetness to keep it in check. Astringent finish with some light puckering and woodiness. Medium-bodied, with relatively mild carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel. The 8% abv is nowhere to be seen - I have had 5.5% pale lagers with more booze raunch than this.

It has been a long time since I have tried a beer style that differs so greatly from anything I have consumed previously. It really does remind me more of wine than beer - and as with any bottle of wine, I probably should have shared this with someone else, because 0.75 litres is a bit much for me.

Final Grade: 4.18, an A-. Panil Barriquee is a thoroughly enjoyable sour - and, speaking from experience, seems to be a good introduction to the style for newbies like me. The balance between the tartness of the various fruit flavours/acetic, and the sweetness of the malts is nothing short of excellent - to say nothing of the masterfully-cloaked ABV, or the pleasant woodiness of the profile, or the fact that it is tasty both when chilled and after warming up to room temperature. I'm still not convinced that sours are up my alley, but I found myself with nothing but compliments for this highly quaffable example. Highly recommended, and something I may get again some time. (2,447 characters)

It pours a very hazy brownish amber, looking red in the off light, with a soft orange aura. A thin web of large bubbles exist only due to a rough pour. With no real head, there's no real lacing.

The aroma brings a mild malt note, soft with biscuit and caramel. A light barnyard funk and yeasty sourness pervade. Tart cherry dampens a breath of alcohol.

Upon sipping, the initial and brief malt sweetness, vague for its brevity, is dwarfed by a fetchingly tart and sour acidity, woody and mature like balsamic vinegar. An earthy mustiness lends a touch of mystery, and alcohol and a feather of horsiness wend their way to a dry but fruity and crisp finish. The result is an almost primal puissant pleasure.

Between light and medium bodied, its presence is of lightly sweet and tangy fruit juice with just the merest sparkling essence.

This beer makes it clear that at least one Italian brewer can give the Flemish folks a run for their sour money. It's not for every palate, but those who enjoy the style should enjoy this as I do. the ABV is legitimate, but its mellow in personality and does nothing to hinder the considerable drinkability. This is la dolce vita in a glass. And so, for now, ciao. (1,214 characters)

2005 Vintage, sampled Nov 2007

Appearance: Loke a lot of other reviewers sampling this after a couple of years, the beer pours a hazy russet with very little head and just a few dots of lace

Smell: There is the telltale Brett sour elements and plenty of sour cherry but there is also something else going on that makes this exceptional; kind of a woody/leathery quality

Taste: Opens with a vaguely fruity, sour cherry flavor that builds in sour intensity by mid-palate; almost a sappy quality; after the swallow, some hints of caramel and wood appear that add terrific complexity

Mouthfeel: Thick and syrupy, with low to no carbonation

Drinkability: Despite the carbonation problems that others experienced, this is a great example of the style (749 characters)

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a chalice. Gave it an aggressive pour at the end but the head didn't stick around long. Dark cherry wood colour that complements the aroma and taste.

I don't have a lot of experience with this particular style but I believe it fits the textbook well. Lots going on here... tart and sour cherries with light woody smoke are definitely there a vinegar pickle-like character.

A dry finish with some bitterness in the after taste, the drink goes down with a low level, fine champagne carbonation.

An interesting beer but I probably won't purchase again at the price it's sold for in the Ontario LCBO (over $11). (643 characters)

Bottled in 2005 (750ml).

Pours a hazy, very nice dark plum color, with a small head that fades away immediately. There's a small ring that leaves behind a minimal lace. If it wasn't for the color of this, it wouldn't be that much to look at. On the second pour, which was a lot more aggressive, I was able to get a quarter inch head that disappeared just as quickly.

Smell; sour apples, tart cherries, oak and mildly alcoholic. Some spices are present, such as cinnamon and pepper.

Taste; as with the aroma lots of sour apples and tart cherries. The oak barrel flavor is very good, and there's a definite acidic quality. There's a touch of vinegar that kind of sits in the background, and this finishes with some mild spices and just a touch nutty. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with very little carbonation. As far as drinkability goes, I don't think that I've ever come cross a beer as drinkable as this one. I love tart flavors, and this style is quickly becoming a favorite of mine, and so far this is the best I've yet had. (1,028 characters)

A clear reddish amber with just a few bubbles feeding a thumbs width of cream colored foam that ends up as a thin film leaving some random lace, I'm liking the color though and I' almost surprised it doesn't have a pinkish head

S some woody funk comes out right away followed by some caramel strawberry and cherry, just a little vinegar and apple cider and no booze at all

T some vinous notes and slightly more vinegar, musty wet wood and not overly sour, everything I smells still there but it tastes even better.

M medium bodied with much more bubbles then what was visible, no heat at all and not that sour, woody cherry aftertaste lingers faintly for a while

O quite drinkable for an 8% sour, I like the mellow mix of fruity funk and wood, pretty solid stuff

I loved the taste and had little to complain about in other areas. I wish I could read Italian because I'm curious to what went in to this beer and I'm too lazy to type it all in too google translate, oh well. Thanks again liamt07 for sending the bottle (1,095 characters)

A: Pours a foamy murky brown brew with medium to medium high effervescence.

S: The aroma is winy, fragrant, woody, very fruity and pleasant.

T/M: The mouth is rich a bit fuller than i had expected, with dark fruit, warming alcohol and a strong sherry like flavour up front. The wood comes through alot aswell, especially as you take the time to enjoy the beer and let it warm.

O: It's a sour beer within what's expected of a traditional Flanders red ale. Very balanced and rich with good enough complexity. (510 characters)

This is a pretty good Flanders Red, though it almost seems like it could just as easily be an Oud Bruin.

The beer pours to a dark, nutty brown color with a deep mahogany red hue. Little to no head. No lacing. Little carbonation.

The smell is great. Nice rasberry tartness with a hint of lactic acid. A hint of vinegar. Some nutty tones as well.

The flavor is very smooth. Not as acidic or tart as I would expect from the nose. Has a nice roasted and nutty finish. Fairly dry.

This beer has nothing on La Folie. It's very good, and probably more complex, but nowhere near as drinkable. (596 characters)

This one pours a brown color with a perfect medium head with great retention and leaves some nice lacing on the glass. The aroma has a definate sourness with a lot of cherry and hints of wood. Smells nice. The flavor is very sour. Very sour. The cherries are definately there but the sourness takes the forefront. There is also a strong woody character that comes in with the cherries. The wood really comes throughthe more I drink - it gives it a strange flavor and mouthfeel. The mouthfeel is moderate to thick and the drinkability is good if you like sour beers. Sour beers aren't really my thing, but this is a good one. (624 characters)

Appearance and Presentation – Sampled a 25.4 oz bottle dated 2005 purchased at Julio’s. The beer pours a rich, dark burgundy with slight amber tones and a small off white head that is a mix of small and large bubbles. Lacing is sparse.

Smell – Sour cherries, oak, flowers and vanilla, it is a beautiful aroma. There is also some alcohol in the smell as well.

Taste – Delightfully sour in the back of the mouth with a pleasing wine/grape/cherry flavor up front. The oak holds its own against the fruit as well. There is also a bit of astringency that I could live without. The sourness dies down as my mouth gets used to the flavor but, the sourness never vanishes, but it is not overpowering. A well balanced Flanders Red Ale, not cloyingly sweet like some or overly sour like others. The aftertaste is agreeably sour and fruity.

Mouthfeel – Medium mouthfeel, with slightly prickly carbonation.

Drinkability and Notes – It is drinkable to a point, after awhile the sourness builds up and the beer becomes less drinkable. The flavors are wonderful and complex, but avoid it if you are one of those people who are completely adverse to sour beers. I myself can’t handle the sourness of Cantillon beers, but this is nowhere near as intense. My favorite Flanders Red Ale to date, it’s a real winner, if only it wasn’t so expensive. (1,349 characters)

Poured this 750 mL dark green bottle into a Lindemans flute. 2006 vintage. There was a mild hiss when I opened this one. No head to speak of, even with a hearty pour. The body was honey/apple cider colored and was increasingly murky with each pour. Tiny bubbles stick to the sides of the flute.

Smell was sour, tangy sweet. Organic. Slightly amonia-like. Not as pungent as expected.

Taste was Apple juice and woodiness (three months in Congnac barrels!). Mildly sweet. Apple peel and cracked pepper. Fruity and refreshing. No alcohol was detectable. Very drinkable but not as sour as I had anticipated.

Mouthfeel was silky. Medium/thin in body. Faint carbonation. (673 characters)

I stumbled across a deal on these at Sam's a couple months back. Panil Barriquée has a leathery red body with some shimmers of copper when backlit. There's a little haziness to the beer but yeast has settled surprisingly well. A soft pour wasn't producing much of a head so a more aggressive pour was needed and produced a two finger head. The head is bone white but has the faintest hint of red that's most likely in my mind. After a few minutes of settling the head became a thin cap with a dense collar that left behind thick, impressive drink lines.

There's a big dose of bright, tart cherries that hits me right off the bat. A slight lactic sourness along with notes of both cider and balsamic vinegar take over. There's an interesting Sweet Tart candy sweetness in the background that plays well with the sour notes. Musty, damp oak flits through here and there adding another layer of depth. My mouth waters after every deep pull I take on this Flanders Red.

A cherry tartness runs throughout this brew but is most noticeable when it first hits my tongue. The cider vinegar takes over mid palate with soft waves of that same candy-like sweetness that was found in the nose. There's a faint touch of lactic sourness with the damp, musty oakiness staying constant but mellow. The sweet and sour goes back and forth in incredible ways that makes it tough to set the glass down. It's tough to beat Panil Barriquée when it comes to Flanders reds.

The body is light on the tongue and the carbonation is healthy enough to keep it flowing at a steady clip. The sourness sticks to the sides and bottom of the tongue while the sweetness runs down the middle. The finish brings along a slight woody dryness.

Panil Barriquée is a gulpable. The sweet and sour play off each other so well it's nearly impossible to set the glass down. The refreshment factor is off the charts and the bottle disappears far too quickly if not checked.

This is a wonderful Flanders Red from the boot and one of the best in its class. This happens to be one of those beers I always like to have at least one bottle in the house at all times. (2,172 characters)

Thanks again to swizzlenuts for sharing this great beer with me as an introduction to the Flanders Red style. Bottled in 2006.

Pours a deep, cloudy cherry mahogany color with a strong wine-like, viney aroma.

The taste is also viney and wine-like and the complexity of the beer lets you mull over a new flavor with every sip - the delicious tart fruitiness comes through the most with big hints of strawberry and orange rind. Vaporous fusels aren't very noticeable given the 8% abv.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly syrupy, and lightly carbonated.

Drinking this was almost psychologically refreshing for me having reviewed 'smaller' styles for quite a while. At $16 per bottle I would put this fabulous beer up against any wine at a similar price. Panil brews a wonderful Flanders and I will definitely be coming back to this again. (845 characters)

Deep reddish brown in colour, turning crimson when held to the light. Large off-white head, decent retention, but almost no lace. Stone fruit aroma tends toward the darker and more acidic, with plum and sour cherry notes predominating. Cigar box comes out as the beer warms. The palate opens with sour cherry, plum skin, and balsamic (minus the sweetness) notes that give way to tobacco, light wood, and the slightest hint of vanilla.

Almost medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. It's slightly puckering acidity is paired with mild tannic astringency. A tasty and approachable sour ale with some wine-like qualities. (620 characters)

Ahhh. Now this is what I am talking about!

It pours a deep red-brown, the colour of a scab that is about to fall off with a ratty pus-yellow head.

The smell is rich. Leather, sour cherries, rotten fruit left unattended in your vegetable crisper for months, even a pinch of horse-sweat.

The taste follows the nose. Delicious. Layer after layer of what an oak aged red is supposed to taste like. It isn't sweet, but the tartness is balanced by the sheer funk. It is like biting into the most delicious rotten apple you've ever eaten.

The mouthfeel is a touch thin. The finish could be a little drier too. But we're nitpicking at this point.

Drinkability? This is freakin' fantastic! I've got a bit of heartburn from it, but it is totally worth the experience. Amazing! (812 characters)

Thought I'd crack this open before the 3 year best by date. From Bir&Fud in Rome.

Light reddish brown color, pours with a substantial head that recedes to a thin cap of foam. No lacing to speak of.

Smells of bready malt, nuts, fruit--raisins and figs. A touch of funk under a layer of candi sugar sweetness.

Tastes of nutty red malt with a twangy bite, cola, milk chocolate. Seems more like a Belgian dubbel than a Flanders brew. A bit of balsamic and strawberry. A little anise too. Some white pepper in the finish. Sweet like a quad, but all these flavors work together well.

Medium bodied, round carbonation with big bubbles, it is creamy on the palate.

A very nice red ale with an Italian twist. (709 characters)

BCTC 2005... Poured a murky, reddish, brown color with a small, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of chocolate, sour cherries, wood, and sweet caramel malts. Taste of wood, nuts, tart cherries, and finished with lots of dry wood. (252 characters)

Year old bottle.

Pours a rather lovely combination of garnet and amber. A dense, but think head with even lacings to the finish. Very nice.

It's sour fruit on the nose. I'd be lying if I said I could pick out anything more specific than that.

It's pretty much all sour cherries on the tongue. Hits sweet and sour in equal measures, but both are pleasantly restrained. Cherry flavour is really front and centre, almost kriek-like.

Can't say anything negative about the mouthfeel. Well carbonated, lets the flavours pop on the tongue. Perfectly on style.

This is a top-notch beer. Never been a fan of the style, but this has won me over. (644 characters)

It pours with a large beige foamy head. It is reddish-brown in color and quite cloudy. Highly effervescent, the head stays around and wraps a nice lace pattern on the glass. Woody and sour in the nose, those traits follow on the palate. An oaky sourness is very prominent up front and then finishes with a dry, fruity flavor....plum, I think. It stated that it was fermented in cognac & bordeaux barrels, but I got little of these flavors other than in the overall profile. Being a fan of the Flemish reds, I was quite impressed with this one from Italy. Wish we could get it here. Hope I get a chance to taste it again in the future. (634 characters)

A: Pours a hazy brown with a sudsy tan colored head made up of rather large bubbles. Moderate lacing sticks to the sides.

S: A good bit of tart cherries, a little bit of wood, some vanilla, and a little bit of vinegar. Very inviting.

T: Similar to the aroma, nice tart cherry with a definite sour/tang to it. Light funky which blends nicely with the tartness. A little bit of oak and vanilla in the midpalate.

M: Medium bodied with plenty of carbonation. Slightly mouth puckering.

O: Really liked this one. The level of tart/sour was on point and really enjoyed the flavors. Was the highlight of that nights tasting. (679 characters)
