Thanks northyorksammy for this one.

Appearance. Pours a clear, kind of light, brown-amber with over a finger of bubbly tan head and some lovely looking carbonation bubbles rising.

Smell. Sour and funky cantelope and green apples. A little cherry, wood, and alcohol.

Taste. Funky with a medium, citrus-like sourness. Some red wine, lemons, oak. Really nice.

Mouthfeel. Nice fairly strong and lively carbonation, medium-light in body.

Overall. Very nice flanders red. Not extremely sour and very drinkable.

Bottle from the LCBO, shared with the group. 750ml into some tulips. Bottled Nov 2010, Lot 1.

Pours a murky reddish brown, with a light tan head. Light lacing and mild retention. Nose of sour cherries, light malts and spicing. Prevalent piercing sour notes nonetheless. Taste has some tart cherries, with a big woody balance. Light tannic character and some green apple. Spicing does well to come in midmouth, and even the the alcohol content, none is felt. Some tartness, lightly puckering - some acetic. Nice refreshing feel, and it was a good idea to split this one. Truly the first Flanders red I've ever enjoyed, very good stuff.

This is the Italian version, the bottle is completely in Italian, and it is sour but not the sourest purposely infected bottle. Decent drinkability, reddish colour. Smooth, above average mouthfeel. Controlled mouthfeel, well malted.Cherry and balance.

Thanks to Matt for sending this to me for my birthday!

A: Pours a hazy brown with a sudsy tan colored head made up of rather large bubbles. Moderate lacing sticks to the sides.

S: A good bit of tart cherries, a little bit of wood, some vanilla, and a little bit of vinegar. Very inviting.

T: Similar to the aroma, nice tart cherry with a definite sour/tang to it. Light funky which blends nicely with the tartness. A little bit of oak and vanilla in the midpalate.

M: Medium bodied with plenty of carbonation. Slightly mouth puckering.

O: Really liked this one. The level of tart/sour was on point and really enjoyed the flavors. Was the highlight of that nights tasting.

A: Pours a really gorgeous copper red color and fairly clear (though dark and highly carbonated). Topped with an off-white head which has decent retention and lacing.

S: Smells very different from the first time I tried this. Dark currents and sour cherry on the nose along with that oaky quality I have come to love so. Smells really good!

T: Sour red fruit follow on the palate and change into a fairly oak driven flavor finishing on the spicy side. This is at least 10 times better than the last bottle I had (which I did not care for). Its very bright and finishes quite dry (due to the oak and hopping I imagine).

M: prickly

O: This is a must for sour enthusiasts though I would caution that there is either a great deal of batch or bottle variance. Older batches (than 2010) may not be at such a high quality.

Notes from 3/11/2011
Poured into DFH Signature glass.

A- Hazy light root beer colored pour, soapy egg shell head, large bubbles. Lacing clings to side of the glass. Mild carbonation bubbles.

S- Light vinegar tones. Oak is very present in the nose, really smooths the acidity. Tart cherries and grapes, slight wet blanket notes as expected for this style. Getting a little vanilla and caramel in the nose.

T- Oak notes right off the bat, tangy vinegar, tart cherries and sour grapes. Funk is very subtle and adds a nice backing to the tartness. Sweetness is very slight in the back of the tongue. Alcohol is invisible.

M- Thin to medium bodied, dry finish, aftertaste is pleasant. Cheeks are tingling, salivary glands are working overtime!

O- Solid beer. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Went back to the LCBO and picked up another 3 bottles. Compared to the $28.00 bottles I've seen in the states $14.00 is a steal!

Bottle pours a dark reddish brown clour with a decent amount of head. Tastes very sour as I am not very fimiliar with this style. Definately has a sour candy like taste. This bottle isn't that bad of a struggle to finish myself, as I was a little worried about. Decent drinkability. Its pretty refreshing too. I might consider another bottle if there is any left on the shelves here at the LCBO.

So...saw this on the shelf at the LCBO for $14.00....I couldn't resist. Couldn't read the bottle...so I didn't know what it was until I could look it up.

a-pours a very cloudy reddish amber colour with a nice head.

s-sour cherries, hoppy bitterness, mild bready notes...

t-WOW...sour cherries punch you in the face, some hoppy flavours come through on subsequent tastes....uhm...not getting alot of sweetness that one might associate with a higher abv beer. Very satisfying.

m-Hmm....mouthfeel was thicker but alcohol wasn't as prominent as you would expect.

d-very drinkable...cost is prohibitive though...LOL

Purchased at LCBO in Ottawa, Ontario.

Poured a mahagony slightly hazey shade of brown/red. Thick and impressive head. Smeel was a bit woody with a slight pie-crust odor, mildly medicinal.

Taste: Sour cherry makes way for a barnyard funk with a slight sweetness. THe taste the developes into a hoppy bitternes mixed with a typical lambic funk. Mildly complex. A slight Chalkines.

Overall average, not the best sour I've had, not the worst!

750 mL bottle, 2009 Vintage, batch # 1623,

A: Pours a dark burgundy, with a soft 2 finger head initially. No lace.

S: Dusty, musty attic, some sweet cherries.

T: Tart oak and cherries, with a lot of must and tobacco type flavours which weren't really to my liking. The actual malt, red wine flavours and acidity was quite enjoyable.

M: Medium-bodied, oaky, moderate acid which was enjoyable.

D: It's tough to come to a final conclusion. There are parts of this beer that I really liked, and parts that I didn't. At $18, I feel its quite overpriced, but it would be interesting to see if it is quite older.

Poured from a 750 ML bottle into a tulip. Bottle from 2007.

a - Pours a murky, mahogany brown color with one finger of white head and moderate carbonation.

s - Smells of sour fruits, especially cherries, dark fruits, oak, wine, some funk, and caramel malts. Very enjoyable.

t - Tastes of sour dark fruits, roasted malts, caramel malts, oak, earthy malts, wine, and maybe a hint of chocolate.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation.

d - A pretty good flanders ale. I thought it smelled amazing and had some great sour fruit and wine to it. Would definitely have again.

2007 vintage, courtesy of BeerBistro in T.O. (and about 35 bucks, of course...) At least they were clear about which version they were serving.

This beer pours a clear, very dark ruby hue, with very little soapy white head, which leaves but a speck or two of lace around the chalice. It smells of mild barley malt, soar lemon/cherry fruit, and a bit of barnyard funk. The taste is quite tart, with some funky cherry and grape flavours, almost like a fruity red wine that just went off. Below this is a decent sweet malt, and earthy, green hops. The carbonation is very soft, the body fruity and fleshy, medium weight, and it finishes with a light tart, vinegary fruitiness.

A nicely balanced ale, among the tartness, funk, and grain.

2005 bottling, drunk in 2009.

This beer is a medium-dark amber with a frothy, airy head. The aroma is quite nice, reminiscent of tart cherries, quite fruity, with an underlayer of malt and a touch of vinegar. Beautiful fruitiness upon first taste, cherry-ish, perhaps a hint of kumquats, with a solid acidity but never too tart like some examples. It finishes quite dry. The mouthfeel is tannic like a red wine, but light bodied as well.

An extremely good Flemish red, better than many Belgian examples I've had... and it's from Italy? Very odd, but quite tasty. I wish I could get this back in Texas.

Great looking ale. A rich brown with amber tints. The nose has sweet malts, tart fruits, oak and musky funk. Taste has sweet caramel malts balanced by sour fruit, oak and a subtle barnyard manure presence. Medium body with delicate carbonation. Great example of the style from this Italian brewery. Well balanced indeed.

2006 vintage in 2009. Was a bit flat, I guess that happens with older vintages of this one. Please read my review in light of that fact.

Appearance: Poured flat, no head or carbonation. Beautiful burgundy-amber-caramel-orange; looks like an uncut ruby.

Smell: Sour cherry, cognac, merlot, figs, tea, prunes, raisins, vanilla, good balsalmic vinegar, pipe tobacco, with wood and a bit of archive room funk with a hint of vinegar.

Taste: Sour cherry, brown sugar, merlot, cognag, figs, prunes, raisins, vanilla oak, tannins, leather-bound mustiness. A nice acidicy.

Mouthfeel: A nice full body, perfect for the style and more than I expected.

Drinkability: I drank this flat and loved every drop. I am guessing it is amazing with the right carbonation.

Certainly better than rodenbach classic, and a little better than duchesse - less vinegar, and less sweet.

I stumbled across a deal on these at Sam's a couple months back. Panil Barriquée has a leathery red body with some shimmers of copper when backlit. There's a little haziness to the beer but yeast has settled surprisingly well. A soft pour wasn't producing much of a head so a more aggressive pour was needed and produced a two finger head. The head is bone white but has the faintest hint of red that's most likely in my mind. After a few minutes of settling the head became a thin cap with a dense collar that left behind thick, impressive drink lines.

There's a big dose of bright, tart cherries that hits me right off the bat. A slight lactic sourness along with notes of both cider and balsamic vinegar take over. There's an interesting Sweet Tart candy sweetness in the background that plays well with the sour notes. Musty, damp oak flits through here and there adding another layer of depth. My mouth waters after every deep pull I take on this Flanders Red.

A cherry tartness runs throughout this brew but is most noticeable when it first hits my tongue. The cider vinegar takes over mid palate with soft waves of that same candy-like sweetness that was found in the nose. There's a faint touch of lactic sourness with the damp, musty oakiness staying constant but mellow. The sweet and sour goes back and forth in incredible ways that makes it tough to set the glass down. It's tough to beat Panil Barriquée when it comes to Flanders reds.

The body is light on the tongue and the carbonation is healthy enough to keep it flowing at a steady clip. The sourness sticks to the sides and bottom of the tongue while the sweetness runs down the middle. The finish brings along a slight woody dryness.

Panil Barriquée is a gulpable. The sweet and sour play off each other so well it's nearly impossible to set the glass down. The refreshment factor is off the charts and the bottle disappears far too quickly if not checked.

This is a wonderful Flanders Red from the boot and one of the best in its class. This happens to be one of those beers I always like to have at least one bottle in the house at all times.

750 ml bottle shared with friends on 2/12/09, 2005 vintage, think I bought this at Hi-Times a while back, reviewed from notes, have also had a fresher batch before, poured into my Three Philosophers glass, color is a red with pinkish amber highlights, 3/4 inch bubbly off white head that does not last very long, no lacing, aroma consists of lacto, sour cherries, mild vinegar, vanilla, oak, granny smith apples, raspberries, and yeast, taste starts off tart with berries and other sweet and sour fruits, oaky in the middle, finish is slightly dry with a sour bite and cherries, more vanilla and oak come out in the finish as it warms, tartness mellows out then but still introduces itself each sip, sour, fruity, and oaky mouthfeel, medium bodied, high level of carbonation, could drink a few more glasses of this, not too sour or sweet, vinegar smell or flavor is not overbearing, goes down easy and can even be refreshing, this is a great Italian beer and I will be drinking more of this in the future, it has a nice sourness from the lactobacillus, should definitely check it out

I have had this beer for some time now (It says bottled in 2005 on the bottle), and my son is going to be born in two days...I won't be able to drink in the hospital, so I might as well start celebrating now. I am tackling the whole 750mL bottle myself. Here we go.

Appearance: The beer foamed over on me when I first opened it, but it still poured a full glass with a solid 1/2" of thick off white foam on top. The beer looks like it would be pretty clear, but there are a whole bunch of bubbles rising to make it look a little cloudy. There is considerable lacing left on the glass after drinking the beer, but it is not in small wisps, but rather solid masses of drying foam.

Aroma: The aroma is really nice on this beer. It is very complex with cherries, and a subtle wine impression. There are a whole lot of toasty notes from the malt and the wood aging is apparent as dry earthy aromatics and a subtle vanilla. The alcohol is coming out more as it warms by adding a spice to the whole profile. Man, the aroma is really nice with this beer.

Taste: The flavor is a tad short of how the aroma built the beer up, but this is still an excellent beer. There is tons of fruitiness in here, but the malt is playing a supporting role overall. The mouthfeel is light and very fizzy on the tongue. It passes right over the palate like nobody's business, and then straight to the back of the throat. There is some acidity in the finish that you get before the sourness makes it rather dry in the finish and masks the alcohol well. I am noticing a warming in my face before any warming in the finish.

Opinion: I am rather impressed with this beer. It not quite a Rodenbach or anything, but it is still a contender with those incredible beers. The overall presentation of this beer has been very pleasant for me, and I would certainly drink this beer again. I would put it into the category of a "starter Flanders" if there was such a thing. It isn't as assertive as I like them, but it a world class beer nonetheless.

Thanks again to swizzlenuts for sharing this great beer with me as an introduction to the Flanders Red style. Bottled in 2006.

Pours a deep, cloudy cherry mahogany color with a strong wine-like, viney aroma.

The taste is also viney and wine-like and the complexity of the beer lets you mull over a new flavor with every sip - the delicious tart fruitiness comes through the most with big hints of strawberry and orange rind. Vaporous fusels aren't very noticeable given the 8% abv.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied, slightly syrupy, and lightly carbonated.

Drinking this was almost psychologically refreshing for me having reviewed 'smaller' styles for quite a while. At $16 per bottle I would put this fabulous beer up against any wine at a similar price. Panil brews a wonderful Flanders and I will definitely be coming back to this again.

A: Brownish red with a small head

S: Tart and sweet/

T: it has a solid tartness and a our bite at the end. Nice alcohol warming. The beer all around is solid, but it needs a bigger sour bite to make it a better Flanders red.

M: Creamy and nice.

D: A bit, but I don't drink this style for the drinkability.

750ml bottle dated 2006, poured into my large St. Feuillien goblet, Barriquée is a hazy, burgundied brown, with a small, white head that forms a steady island from the streamers shooting off the etching up the middle of the glass, as well a thick collar, leaving light, scattered lace.

Smell is sweeter, cherries and citrus, with a thick, liqueur component, like Grand Marnier.

Taste is sweeter then sour, but the acidity was a nice pairing with my NY strip, nice woody funk and sour cherries, malty. Citrus, tart and a bit boozy, a bit thick for my taste in the style, but nicely done.

Mouthfeel is a bit thicker, more sugary, but very smooth.

Drinkability was pretty good, even though I prefer them much more sour, and wish this 2006 vintage had another 2 years on it. Very nice pairing with steaks, I compared it to my wife's Bordeaux and it by far exceeded it, which really shocked me.

This was bottle 0229 from batch #8. Brewed in 2007. The beer poured a hazy, reddish brown. Topped by a wispy beige head that faded to a thin ring. The aroma is very sour, with acidic, earthy and lightly medicinal notes. From the moment it hits the tongue, this beer is sour throughout. There are hints of cherry fruitiness, a slight medicinal character and an earthiness in the finish. This beer is light bodied, with low carbonation and a refreshing dry finish. I found this beer to be very drinkable, incredibly smooth, despite the sourness. It beats Rodenbach easily.
