For a group who call them "Lagerheads", they sure do make a lot of ale! Their Pale Ale is uncharacteristically toasty, nutty and malt-balanced. But that doesn't mean that the hops take any backseat.

The ale kicks off with a rich copper pour that hinges on hazy bronze and deep amber. Its creamy and sandy-stained head is long in retention and trails with fingerling lace. Its foam stance is impressive.

Toasty sweet aromas capture the essence of toast, pecan and toffee; just ahead of its spicy balance of grapefruit, orange peels, torn pine needles, fresh-cut grass and acute herbal notes. Its vegetative spiciness has no problem with that rich and malty nose.

As that malty sweetness wraps round the tongue it seeps in with savory caramelized taste- once again resembling toffee, honey-dipped pecan and heavy crusted breads. As the ale turns fruity from hops, the orange peel and honey flavors align on the tongue for impressions of marmalade. But then the finish comes and an acute bitterness is revealed; dragging with it the acidic tones of grapefruit and also grassy, stem and herbal flavors of resinous pine and chive.

Its firm texture is creamy and sweet early on. But once the carbonation dispels, a malty-dry backbone is revealed- also exposing its hop sharpness and mild grassy-type astringency. Somewhat of a peppery bite closes the session with a balanced finish with lingering sweetness and bitterness.

Tyranny is certainly an anti-establishment type of Pale Ale- it simply doesn't conform to the style norms. With the hearty malt sweetness of big Amber Ale or even Scottish-type maltiness, but then the hops required to balance the taste is nearer American IPA. After all, what would "lagerheads" know about Pale Ale?

Pours a dark brown with a copper hue abs a frothy half inch khaki head that dissipates slowly.

Citrus and deeply toasted, caramelly, almost melanoidin-like malt notes form the initial aroma. It's very nutty and rich.

Flavor reveals more hop character, with citrus and pine underlying that highly toasted and nutty caramel malt backbone. The hop flavor becomes bitter and resiny mid palate, but not overwhelmingly so. Grapefruit and lemon contrast the sweet caramel nicely.

Body is moderate, with carbonation a touch on the high side, and modest alcohol warmth.

Lots more malt character than most, reminiscent of a bock, this might be a good gateway ipa. I love the malt character, which is rich and tends to overwhelm the hops. Bitterness is spot on for an apa, but combined with the toasty notes, is too much for my palate.
