Notes/Commercial Description:
Hog Happy Hefeweizen is a full-flavored, traditional German-style wheat beer that tastes like it comes straight from Munich, but is made with wheat from local farms. The yeast used during fermentation gives this straw-colored beer the sweet flavor and aromas of banana & clove.

You might wonder what’s behind the ‘Hog Happy’ name. Well, it is pretty simple. The grain used in our brewing process gets passed on to local farmers and their livestock (including the pigs). Although there is no alcohol in the spent grain, the little piggies can’t seem to get enough – the grain just makes them very happy!

We encourage you to do your part in enhancing the happiness of the pigs on the seacoast of NH. Drink a beer – feed a pig!

M - leaves a long good after taste
O - I bought it for the style and I was in NH but I will look for it again

Pours a lightly hazy medium golden straw color with a huge fluffy bone white head that persists forever. Smells of clove and other assorted yeasty esters along with a sweet honey like malt and a mild wheat spice aroma. The flavor is sharp with a hit of fruity tart with a solid dose of clove. Light apple and cherry fruits with a light sweet light sugary malt flavor. Medium body with a spirited level of carbonation and a sharp sweet tart mouthfeel. Decent brew, I could certainly entertain the thought of drinking this on a warm day.

Before tasting, I was pretty set off by the fairly weak smell. However, this has got a REALLY nice taste.

This is a fruity and refreshing beer, just as a weiz beer should be.

There was a weak head retetion although this may be because of my sucky pour or glass but in Germany, the weiz beer tends to be fairly foamy.

Nevertheless, props to Throwback again!

In my weizen glass, this beer was a hazy gold color with a small white head.

Banana and spice aroma. A fresh, outdoorsy aroma. Grainy.

A lot of banana in the taste. Clove, which lingered and tickled my nose. Wheat.

A nice, refreshing beer. Nice to drink on a ho summer day after work.

Presentation: 22 oz. bottle poured into a Sam Adams pint glass. No freshness date on the bottle. Served and enjoyed chilled.

Appearance: Golden yellow to light orange in color with a slight cloudiness throughout. Pours a light two finger and cloudy white head that recedes slowly into a nice lacing all around.

Aroma: Some spicy hop notes mix with the clove and bubblegum notes. Some graham cracker notes in there as well. Very light and refreshing.

Taste: The hops are a bit subdued here and the bubblegum sweetness and clove really take over. Not overly sweet but definitely on the sweeter side. Light refreshing and drinkable.

Mouthfeel: Definitely a lighter body. A bit creamy in texture as well.

Overall, a really nice light and refreshing hefeweizen. Nothing too profound or unexpected but this works well for a warm day.

a nice, bright, golden pour with a big fluffy, white head... very attractive hefe..

immediate notes of clove, banana, vanilla permeating out of the bottle as well as glass.. draws one in, like on the old warner brother cartoons where a character somewhat floats in the air following his/her nose...

pretty tasty actually...a somewhat sweeter brew with a touch of tartness that causes ya to smack your lips together... what one smells, one tastes...

lighter to meedium bodied, easy to sip

not a big hefe person, but this is quite enjoyable

A: Pours a hazy orange color with a large, two finger foamy head. Not much retention, quickly reducing to a thin cap of white on top. Very little bits of lacing.

S: Yeasty with a bunch of wheat. Some light spices, mostly coriander, and some citrus, banana, and apple.

T: A bit of orange and banana upfront, the banana intensifies as the beer warms a bit. There is some yeast, wheat, and spice on the midpalate that lingers on the tongue.

M: Light to medium bodied, nice level of carbonation. Smooth and easy drinking.

O: The more I drink it, the more I like it. An easy drinking, low abv hefe? Sign me up. Not the best hefe I have ever had, but very serviceable.

Sampled on January 14, 2012. It pours from the 22 ounce bottle a golden yellow, cloudy, highly carbonated, and very heady. There are lots of aromas tickling my nose with an upfront wheat character and yeast, banana, and clove playing up the rear. The body is light to medium. The taste is subtle with wheat and yeast to start and a clean, crisp finish. The beer is very drinkable.

Pours a two-finger white head that fades quickly leaving traces of lace. Hazy amber color. Good carbonation and light-medium bodied. Citric and yeast nose and flavor is tart lemon and yeast. $5.50 for a 22oz bottle from Throwback Brewery North Hampton, NH.

Pours a large fizzy head of 2+ fingers that fades fairly quickly with touches of lacing, over semi hazy orange nectar colored beer, tons of bubbles floating up.

Nose is a little yeasty, plenty of earthy wheat malt aromas, nice German like hefe yeast, light spices and some citrus, a little bit of sweet malts, a citrus candy like aroma as well, hints of banana and apple.

taste starts with a tart fruit flavor, almost soured but not quite, a bit acidic as well. The yeast kicks in with a light yeasty flavor but more fruits, light banana and apple, clove and light spices, a bit of citrus and sweet malty candy almost, lots of carbonation helps it dance on the tongue, little juicy. Nice wheat flavors and light toasty malts. Finishes a little sweet not quite as dry as I hoped, a weird almost lilac like floral flavor really late with more clove and spices, light wheat and some citrus.

Mouth is lighter bodied, tons of carbonation.

Overall not bad, typical hefe, nothing really wrong, although some weird and interesting flavors with the tartness and acidity as well as apple, and the weird floral flavor on the finish. A bit drier would have been nice.

Thanks johnnnie for the trade!

Pours a cloudy straw color with a rather thin head. Even with an aggrresive pour, I still only got one inch.

I smell wheat malt and a bit of banana, clove, and a touch of citric orange.

Taste is full of a syrupy sweet orange, which is kind of a surprise. The banana and spicey clove mix with a crispness from the wheat malt. Body is semi-light, but right on for the style. Definitely easy to drink, but I get almost an orange rind spiciness that borders on a Belgian Witbier. The malt is slick and syrupy, like i said before, which is actually a nice counterpart to what can be an overly crisp feeling. I like the way the flavors come in and leave quickly. It makes you want more.

Thanks to VanillaMike for sending this my way. Shared with a few Rejects at our UFC 135 viewing.

A - Golden colored beer with a nice head and some nice spots on the side.

S - Nice wheat, a bit bready, slight bit of clove. This one has an interesting tartness to it which is not unpleasant.

T - Pretty nice, a bit of belgian yeast, touch of banana and a hint of clove. The tartness provides a little bit of bite and interesting character to this.

M - Active carbonation, lighter bodied.

O - This is a really great beer. I could have killed multiple 22 oz. of this by myself. Tasty, east to drink, a good hefe and nice session beer.

Bottled 8/11, drank 9/17. Poured into my Portsmouth Brewery tulip.

A - Gold, straw colored & cloudy. Looking like a typical Hefe, with a bit extra bit of cloudiness. Regular pour leaves 1/4" head, with minimal lacing. Head stays for almost entire glass.

S - Wheat, malt, slight bready aroma. Nothing overpowering, very mild.

T - Light citrus, crisp, sweet. Wheat, banana & clove flavors. I get a nice twang, almost a sour note, in the back of my palate from the citrus - interesting. Diggin' it!

M - Smooth, crisp, perfect carbonation. Very easy drinking!

O - A spot on Hefe, but better than the rest! Another gem from Annette & Nicole! The best part of this beer: the spent grains are fed to local livestock!

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is a golden-orange coloring with yellow highlights and a filmy ring around the surface. Aromas of biscuits and toast, with some light spicing and buttery highlights. Flavors are light and crisp, with roasted grains in the background giving rise to a buttery and citrus blending. Extremely smooth, with a slightly slick lacing along the glass. Aftertaste is quick and subtle, with a tangy citrus and cinnamon blend. Smooth, clean finish. Tasty!

Had on tap at the tasting room. Good size pour into a sampler.

Pours nicely hazed and yellow, pretty by the book for an American hefe.

Aroma is mild and a bit sweet. Doesn't give away too much, but is pleasant and representative of the flavor.

Not being the biggest fan of the yeasty hefes, I almost passed on this pour. Glad I didn't. The flavors are super-clean, and like everything brewed from these gals, very fresh. Very dense banana flavor, touch of clove spiciness but not overkill. Wonderful all-around flavor.

Mouthfeel is perfect. It's a bit dense and nicely carbonated.

9/6 update: Drank much of a two week old growler of this one, and it held up stunningly well. Delicious still, so no change to the scores.

While I haven't changed my personal opinion of hefes in general, this is one that even a non-fan of the style can enjoy. Well-crafted.
