Notes/Commercial Description:
Campfire is a full-bodied, robust smoked porter. We put a lot of love into this beer – hand-smoking the malt on local applewood, giving this beer a very appealing and balanced smoky flavor & aroma. The result? Jet-black roasty toasty goodness.

Since we took care to craft this beer with just the right balance of smokiness, you can pair Campfire with a wide variety of foods – especially barbecue! Or, for dessert, you might want to simulate a beautiful night outdoors by pairing Campfire with S’mores!

Sampled from a 22oz bottle in a standard pint glass.

A - Deep, dark brown, almost black, with some light coming through around the edges. A small beige head.

S - Smoke and roasted malts with some chocolate and brown sugar. More of a roasted smell than I'd expect from a porter.

T - A nice moderate level of smoke. It's clearly there but doesn't dominate. Nice malt flavors accompany it. There's a hint of sweetness throughout.

M - A moderate consistency and carbonation with a slightly creamy texture.

O - I thought it was a little heavy on the roasted malts for a porter but a nice, tasty beer.

22 oz bottle poured into a nonic.
6.4% ABV, 48 IBUs,

Thanks Rochefort10NH for the brew! I can dig a good smoke beer.

A - Gun smoke precedes campfire smoke as this bottle hisses when opened. Quite effervescent, a tan head towers over the black beer for what seems like forever. As it collapses into a frothy pile heavy chunks of lace are left on the pint for a sexy start to this beer.

S - Cherry wood smoke and campfire sing from behind the billowing head! Roasted malt provides chocolate and coffee nuances to this somewhat one-dimensional beer. Smoke remains at the forefront but it's certainly not overwhelming.

T - Smooth roasted malt combines a sweet caramel undertone that's immediately swept aside by bitter coffee which in turn transforms into gritty, charred toast on the finish.

M - Smooth starting, this medium bodied porter has a soft entry that leads to a gritty and dark roasted finish that's got quite a bit of acrid, dry burnt bitterness. IBUs are somewhat high, so hops, in conjunction with roasted malt, are somewhat assaulting here while overall smokiness is actually kind of lower.

O - Throwback's Campfire starts great with a gently wafting aroma of smoke but really ramps up the roasted character a little too much in this beer which gives it a very "burnt" flavor and feel that's just a little over the top. As far as smoke beers go, it's actually somewhat light on that front. As far as porters go, the malts in this are about as roasty as they come.

$8.99 for a 22 oz. bottle.

A: jet black, poured with a full rocky head that kept it to the bottom of the glass
S: medium nose, deep roasted malt, cocoa undertones
T: nicely done, deep roasted malt up front with balanced bitter finish, smokiness is underlying but noticeable
M: rounded, very pleasant, and very drinkable

Rich dark brown color impervious to light. Bubbly tan head rises reluctantly but quickly falls. Very little lacing.

Fresh baked bread aroma from the malt wrapped in a gentle blanket of spicy smoke. Excellent balance on the nose, just enough roughness from the roasted grains and smoke to keep the malt interesting.

Good dose of smoke up front with the first sip but not overpowering. Some bitterness from the roasted grains. Acceptable malt backbone to carry the bold flavors. Finishes with a bite from roasted malt and carries the smoke flavor through to the end. Smoke flavor is almost overdone - threatens with an ashtray like flavor, but mostly plays well with the roasted malt body.

Body is about medium on the scale although I prefer a thicker brew for this style of beer. Acceptable mouthfeel that finishes cleanly with a lingering roasted malt flavor and hints of smoke left behind. Smoke cleans up enough to avoid said "ashtray" taste after you sip it.

Its hard to get smoke flavor just right and I think this beer has excellent balance with it. All that is missing is a thicker dose of malt flavor and body to bring out more complexity but otherwise good example of this style.

Dark brown in color with a thin tan head. Not surprisingly, quite smokey. There’s a hint of vanilla and toffee to it, plenty of roasted malt, too. A mild fish food note to the aroma as well. The flavor is smokey, but despite the name, not really over the top. The malt flavors are allowed to come through and give some roast, coffee, chocolate, and toffee characteristics to the beer. It is a little watery in all aspects, however, and the fish food aroma is a bit much for me.

Kudos to Nicole and Annette. Excellent beer. Look forward to visiting your brewery.

Compared in a side-by-side taste test against Stone's Smoked Porter (which has some pretty high scores in BA). Served both beers in tulip glasses.

a: looked identical to Stone. dark brown, with a thin off-white head. Nice.

s: perhaps this was its only detriment compared to Stone. The aroma was on the weak side. More subtle.

t: I really like the taste of this beer. Very complex. Clearly the smoke came through. And the obvious burnt coffee notes. There was definitely a novel taste (quite pleasant) that I couldn't place or identify. Perhaps nutty notes.

mf: appropriate amount of carbonation. right viscosity and weight.

overall: will definitely look to buying this beer again, hopefully by Growler. Strongly recommend.

And from my point of view, on par w/ the very popular Stone's Smoked Porter.

Pours a five+ finger brown head that fades very slowly to thin layer leaving a good lace. Black color, no highlights. Good carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Smoky coffee nose, flavor is similar smoky roasted coffee with hints of caramel. $9.95 for a 22oz bottle from Bert’s Better Beers Hooksett, NH.

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is almost black, with ruby highlights around the edges. Frothy, beige head that slowly settles into a filmy coating and clings to everything it touches. Aromas are smokey, with a nutty and coffee backbone. Flavors are rich, with a mocha coffee backbone and smooth, smokey overtones. Meaty qualities throughout, leading to a smokey, bitter roasted aftertaste. Rich, smooth finish that is slightly cloying. This would be great with brats, and would be good to cook with.
