Appearance - Thick black with a 1 inch soft/fluffy brown/cream colored head. The head disappears rather quickly and thins out to a thin outer ring around the glass.

Aroma - Smells of chocolate and peanut butter with a bit of roasted malts as well. Unable to detect any of the hop flavors that you make expect from a 78 IBU beer.

Taste - Peanuts up front followed by roasted chocolates. Slight bit of bitterness from the hops.

Mouthfeel - Thick and creamy to start. As the beer warms up, the body becomes a little bit thinner and feels smoother/silkier on the tongue. Tends to leave a sticky sensation around the month as well.

Overall - A good beer from a local brewery. Worth a try, but not a must have each year it is released.

The beer pours a nice, midnight black with no light coming through. It pours with a head of tiny bubbles the color of a nice sandy khaki, bordering on orange. The head is a light scrim but still has a little height to it, and it leaves lines of thin and droopy lacing along the glass. The beer’s body is completely indistinguishable due to the beer’s dark coloring. On the nose, the beer smells of deep roasty peanuts with a nice touch of chocolate. The peanut smell is tremendously strong, tipping briefly into vegetal notes with touches of briny salt. It’s not the best smell right as it hits your nostrils, but as you smell further it becomes quite inviting. On the tongue the beer tastes chocolate sweet with a roasty bitter balance to the beer, and some slight saltiness from the peanuts. In flavor, the beer begins as sweet chocolate, which is immediately muscled aside by rich, homemade peanut butter flavors. I say homemade because the actually nutty flavor of the peanuts is beautifully present beside the richer flavors of cream. Salt and touches of herbal grass are also present on the tongue, but the peanuts are the main flavor here, and they are gracefully blanketed by a light flavor of milk chocolate. The finish is big peanuts, salt, and then a lingering creamy chocolate flavor that creates the aftertaste. In the mouth, the beer feels thick and creamy in body with a nice chewy mouthfeel and a soft, velvety carbonation with just a light bite. The mouth is left wet, but peanut dry on the very middle of the tongue. My only complaint is that I want this beer a little thicker. Overall, this is a hell of a unique beer. A peanut lovers’ beer for sure, with enough chocolate to interest the Reese’s lovers, too. It makes a great dessert beer, and would probably pair beautifully with vanilla ice cream. This is a beer for dessert, so don’t go trying to session it. Definitely a beer to try, and a great beer from Throwback.
