32oz swingtop growler poured into a CBS snifter. My sister and her boyfriend each have a growler of the month membership and graciously supply me with one of the growlers regularly...gotta love this setup!
A - Growler opens with a nice whoosh of carbonation...a good sign and pours black as black can be into the glass. A firm pour yields a frothy, dense finger and a half of mocha/tan foam which shows quite good staying power. Foamy lacing coats the glass as the beer level falls.
S - Fairly light aroma...getting some chocolate and a bit of the ginger comes thru as an herbal and spicy component that is identifiable as ginger, perhaps only because it is in the name. There is also a bit of a menthol-ish, slightly band-aid'y phenol character in the aroma. Cocoa sits behind the ginger but adds nicely. A bit of earth and some fruity esters sit quietly in the background but are still noticeable.
T - Roasty coffee up front and at the base of everything. Earthy and burnt, charred malt flavors as well. The ginger rises out of the dark burnt flavors and sits on top with other green, grassy and herbal flavors. Dark chocolate and cocoa powder are a bit in the background. There also seems to be a bit of a cool minty flavor in here too.
M - Somewhat light in body...definitely a bit shy of medium. Carbonation is at a good medium level...lively, a bit foamy, and still remaining smooth. Charred malt lingers behind with an acrid bitterness into the swallow. A bit of ginger and a cool minty-ness also stay behind past the swallow. A bit more body would be helpful here to thicken things up a bit.
O - Overall, a good but not great stout. Chocolate and ginger could be amped up a bit more to match the name. Would also like to see the body thickened up a bit. All this being said, still enjoyable and quite drinkable. A bit high on the cool and herbal character in the flavor however. Glad to have tried this one.
