32oz growler courtesy of my generous sister poured into a Duvel tulip.
A - Growler opens with a very solid pop. Pours a deep, somewhat muddy brown color with a huge 4 finger cap of dense, whipped creamy textured tan foam. Lots of sticky, webby lacing is left all over the glass. A couple of stages is required to the pour, but a good looking porter.
S - This beer just explodes with chai tea spices. Very spicy and sweet...cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, oranges, yeasty, phenols, licorice, wintergreen, spearmint, herbal, cool. Actually smells a bit like an overly intense saison with some additional, out of the ordinary spices added in. Only hints of porter come thru...mild, mild touches of roasted malt come thru.
T - Roasty, charred and a bit smokey porter base. Layered on top with chai tea spices. Cinnamon, sour cherries, oranges, wintergreen, cloves, band-aids, ginger. Interesting...
M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation too. Tingly, lively on the tongue. Roasty at the base but firmly planted chai spices take over. Feels a bit breakfasty and wintery to me.
O - Overall, an interesting beer. With chai spices, a little really goes a long way. I think this is a bit of the case here. I have to say that I like what I'm getting here, but I think this would be really good if the chai was cut back a bit. The spices should play off of the roasty porter flavors more and add a bit of subtlety to the taste. The chai here is a bit in your face for my liking. Good, but more balance would definitely improve this one.

Bottled as "Chai Tea Porter"
The beer pours a dark, coffee black with a huge head of rocky, khaki bubbles that slowly fizzle away, leaving a lacing of sticky stripes on the sides of the glass. In body, the beer is too dark for the eyes to penetrate. On the nose, the beer smells beautifully spicy with chai and cinnamon notes alongside very light grass and roast malt and a touch of smooth milk chocolate. On the tongue, the beer tastes fruity sweet with a light, bitter roast and a touch of cider-like acidity. The beer finishes sweet and milky with a touch of roast. In the mouth, the beer feels on the very light side of medium with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel, but a slight watery touch at the end. The flavors began as spicy, fruity chai with a touch of roast. The flavors transition into spicy, milk chocolate with soft coffee notes. Light plastic flavors also tint the edges of the chai-notes, but they are very slight. A very soft cidery flavor can be sensed, right on the finish of the beer with a touch of bitter coffee, toffee, creamy milk, smooth chocolate, and a smidge of cinnamon. Overall, the beer is a lighter porter, and gives a light watery sense to it as you sip, but it is tasty and sessionable with some nice chai and porter flavors. It is a great representation of what its label says it is, I just wish this beer was a little thicker… The beer was really nice to sip, though, and is an excellent beer to session over a cool fall or winter’s night.
