Listed at 10.2% at Bodega on 2/17, review from notes.

Ruddy copper/bronze color. Served with zero head in a shaker pint (ugh, really 'dega??)

Malty sweet flavor on this English Barleywine. Fairly bitter.

The mouthfeel is extremely dry, bordering on husky. Not hot but the booze is quite apparent.

Overall I just found this to be a bit much to drink while out at the bar. The serving size was also a big problem.

22oz. unlabeled bomber directly from the brewer. Thanks a bunch Jack. I've waited a long time to review this and thought, what the heck, lets go for it. Poured into a Blue Point snifter.

A: Viscous pour yields a very slowly forming layer of bubbles around the brew that seems to emerge gradually from the depth. Beer is a dark, cloudy mahogany. No lacing.

S: One sniff and I know I'm in for a fight with this one. Deep aromas of toffee, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, and honey. There's a bit of a boozy kick in the foreground but it does nothing to cover the dense flavors present here.

T: I hate hoppy barleywines and as I take my first sip, I'm a little afraid of this one. The opening reassures me though. Caramel, toffee, and a big, rich malt backbone greet me. Hop bitterness is pushed all the way to the back and then covered with booze. Very sweet the whole way through. Brown sugar towards the end with just a splash of hoppiness right as it ends. Finish is spicy with a sudden emergence of carbonation. Aftertaste is caramel and the sweet part of butterscotch.

M: Incredibly full bodied with very little carbonation. Feel is oily, thick, and viscous, almost as if I could chew on it. This one isn't for the faint of heart. Finish is messy with an aftertaste that sticks and lingers.

D: Before anything else, I want to thank the owner/brewer of Brew Kettle for personally sending me this one. As for the beer itself? For its body and intense flavor? Hugely drinkable and incredibly enjoyable. Flavor and complexity is exquisite with a feel that is completely unique in its smoothness and density. This one definitely flies under the radar. A great representation of its style.

Pours a deep amber with a white head and lacing. Perfect clarity and a good looking brew. Great malty aroma that also has some fig and plum. The taste is very close to that, raisin, fig jelly, brown sugar and really just a juicy malt bomb. Just enough hop bitterness to keep things interesting and balanced. Full, lush body with ample carbonation. Quite a beer. This brewery has continued to impress me over the years.

22oz bottle poured into a pint glass
A: Hazy light brown with a 1/2-finger head
S: Caramel, raisin, sweet malts... think a nice bread pudding
T: Matches the nose, adding brown sugar and cherries
M: A big beer, fairly balanced overall, just a hint of alcohol
O: A really good example of the style. I find many barleywines to be out of balance whether too sweet or too boozy, this one is not at all

A. Pours a slightly cloudy, radiant copper color. A really nice cherry glow. Half finger of relatively loose cream colored head that retains nicely. Lacing is also fairly spotty.

S. Lots of caramel, dark fruit, vanilla, and toasted bread. Little bit of earthy hop character as well.

T. Toasted malt, brown sugar, caramel, vanilla, ripe cherries and raisin. Some zesty hops on the finish, but those are subdued. This is a delicious English Barleywine, exceptionally well-rounded and flavorful.

M. Full-bodied, balanced, well rounded with just the right amount of carbonation.

O. An excellent English Barleywine...quite a surprise. I'm not sure how often they bottle this, this was picked up for me sometime Late Summer/Fall 2011, but hopefully this is a recurring release from Brew Kettle. A very balanced and malt forward barleywine with lots of toffee and marshmallow qualities. This is great stuff here.
