12oz. Dark brown pour, very little light gets through. Thin layer of light tan head.

Aroma, toasted malt and nut. A little molasses. Some lighter toffee and herbal hops.

Taste, Some sweeter malt and cola. Really very little toasted malt or hop presence. The sweetness is just not quite the right type of sweetness for me. Maybe the malt bill doesn't work for my taste. Some fit and raisin also. Something just slightly fruity tart in the finish as well.

Definetely lighter with slightly higher carbonation. Maybe designed to be more of session brown, just a bit too sweet for me. Normally a sweet brown sets well with me, but not here.

A: Pours a slightly hazy, just about opaque deep brown in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation and moderate garnet red highlights. The beer has a finger tall foamy tan head that slowly reduces to a large patch of mottled medium thick film and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of toasted malts, roasted malts, and nuttiness with light aromas of coffee and chocolate.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of toasted and roasted malts with a light to moderate amount of nuttiness. That is followed by light flavors of chocolate and coffee. Light amounts of bitterness in the finish which fades fairly quickly.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth.

O: Good but nothing great or special - rather pedestrian. Definitely drinkable but nothing I would run out to get again.

Poured on-tap at the brewery and served in a shaker pint, the beer is a slightly hazed, opaque, brown coloring with a frothy, clingy, light tan head. Nose of coffee, chocolate, nutty sweet, and roasted notes. Light and sweet. Flavors are smooth and sweet, with a crisp undertone of roasted notes. Nutty throughout, with a hint of bitter chocolate. Smooth and light in mouth, with a tangy sweet aftertaste. Clean, smooth finish. Very tasty.

12 ounce bottle -> New Belgium globe glass

A - dark brown with a very small bubbly head, not much in the way of retention or lacing.

S - roasted nuts dominate the nose. Very pleasant and aromatic.

T - mild and malty up front with a finish that is roasted nuts, a bit of sassafras, and a bit of coffee.

M - a little thin without tons of carbonation, but no aftertaste either.

O - as brown ales go, there are many that are worse.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick texture. There was a half inch of creamy, tan-colored, fairly long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: An above average aroma of malt, the brown ale nuttiness, and a little chocolate.

T: Tasted of light malt, a hint of chocolate, and the aforementioned nuttiness. Not necessarily an awful flavor, but definitely on the thin, watery side. Not pushed far enough.

M: An average amount of carbonation with a smooth, but thin finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is simply a very average beer. Not the most undrinkable brown ale, but certainly could have been better.

Appearance - Poured from a bottle into a glass. Pours with a ~1" tannish head which is fairly persistent and leads to a good amount of lacing. Dark brown color, reminds me of a light mahogany color, also kind of hazy. I like the look very much.

Smell - Nose is very nutty. I don't smell any coffee or caramel, but it smells like literally roasted chestnuts and well, upon another whiff just now, it does smell slightly caramel, definitely has a sweet tinge to it. Not very strong nose, though, I had to take deep breaths to be able to smell it.

Taste - I think the taste was outstanding. It is a bit hoppy, but then again it is an ale. I do think it would be a bit better with less hops and more caramel/roasted flavor. I am not sure what the IBU is. I do taste, as mentioned, a very roasted nutty flavor. Some caramel and coffee sweetness to it, but not overpoweringly so. A fine balance I think.

Mouthfeel - Eh. Average. Average body, average carbonation. Not much to speak of.

Overall: I dig it. I will buy again.
