Without a doubt the worst homebrew store that I have ever been in. After walking in to "look" around, I was stopped shortly by the owner who dropped me into a conversation about how I brew. He questioned my process very rudely and made me feel very uncomfertable. I went to walk around but there was no room to even move with old bags of grain and outdated equipment scattered all over the store. The place was a MESS and any store that looks like that can't have quality products. I turned and high tailed it out of there never looking back. Thankfully there are online retailers or I wouldn't be brewing anymore.

I have been making homebrew for around a year now and have made regular trips to the Athens Do It Yourself Shop, both the old location off E. State St and the new location on Euclid Dr. There are several great things about the shop. One it has a diverse selection. While it tends on the cluttered side most times of the year there is an array of fresh malts, hops, and yeast. Two is the knowledge of the owner. If your interested in where to get local hop plants or how each sack of malt was roasted he's got it. There is also a nifty program where you can draw up recipes and if you want he'll save them for you (I'm a bit scatter brained and managed to save a few recipes this way). If you need your alcohol content measured, no problem. The owner is always happy to help you and is just generally excited to see people brewing. Show a little patience, get pumped about your brew, and I guarantee you'll enjoy this place.

Ok, tried this place out after moving to the area and started looking for a new shop to use. First finding the place was pretty easy except finding the store front was a pain in the butt because it looked like the front of an out of commision garage. The owner was just leaving for the day (@ 2 in the afternoon on a weekday). He unlocked the place and let us in. He first wanted to sit down and talk. Were I do not mind sitting doan and chatting with someone, espicially if we are going to talk about homebrewing this guy just wanted to talk about fish he had caught on numerous fishing trips and about how he had to be brought home by the police the night before. After telling him for the FIFTH time that I had to get what I wanted and get going to get my kids of the bus in time he finally got up. Now the selection is GREAT at this place, IF YOU CAN FIND IT!!! This place is a total mess from homebrewing hell. After finding everything he kept trying to sell me 55 lb sacks and full pound bags of hops and 6 month past date yeast strains. Also his hops were all stored in a freezer and all wide open after they have been open?!?!?! Again the guy is nice enough but he has some work to do to clean this place up. I guess I will stick to ordering online.

This was the first store I ever visited when I started homebrewing. I happened to stop by on a day the store was closed, but the owner happened to be there and graciously let me come in anyway.

First off the store is VERY cluttered. It strikes me more as a storage building for a hoarder than a real shop and made me very uncomfortable being in there. A friend of his was in the store too and the owner sat me down for a chat, asking what I was looking for. Telling him I was looking to get into brewing, he tried to push a can of pre-hopped malt extract on me (which I did not want). I deflected most of his suggestions and bought a carboy and a couple other pieces of equipment instead.

Overall it left a very awkward, bad taste in my mouth and I don't honestly think I'll ever go there again.
