When Doran’s owned the "soo" brewery this northern grog was labeled "Doran’s lager". Other offerings from the old brewery were Doran's '55' and silver spray lager. The recipe for this lager hasn't changed a lot, it still has the familiar hoping that made this brew the staple of the northern lakeshore taverns, but the process and quality must have been maintained because this beer is not crystal clear.

This rendition is called “superior” lager:

Pours a murky pale gold color, slight hints of hops and yeast to the nose, starts crisp, mouth feel has a light-medium body heavy on the hops and a finish punctuated by the yeast….which isn’t filtered very well, that stays in there to the end.

A fair local drink on the deck of the laker or salmon boats that cruise south Superior and the 3-brand-taverns proliferating the superior Canuck shore....and little else. 2 0r 3 is enough!

I drink this stuff when I go north to the salmon or moose camp…… for a nostalgia thing...gives you a sense of where you are, it’s a northern Ontario tradition.. I bought some down south here and it hasn't the same impact as when you're chugging one staring at superior's craggy shoreline from a trolling salmon boat.. On the patio in an urban T'ranna pub it seems out of place…………and rightfully so…..this is a logger’s lager.

Just recently had this beer on tap at the Lakeside hotel in Wawa northern Ontario. (say hi to Woody for me if you drop in) I revised my ratings accordingly. This beer was made at Northern's other plant that kegs draft and it was a good draft beer. I don't care for it bottled and never in a can. I do recommend it on tap and at the Lakeside hotel in Wawa to anyone visiting Northern Ontario who wants to truely experience the "local flavor".

A very light gold offering that has a head that vanishes in very short order. The smell is murky and the taste is of a malty sweetness which does not linger. However the label is very impressive, Lone wolf standing in front of a full moon. Not a good brew but passable.

Not an exceptionally great beer, but not terrible either. Came out to a to a medium yellow color, with odors of malt and barely quickly detected. Did have a nice Belgian-like lace that hung around the glass to the end. Mouthfeel was fuller than one expected, with a straightforward delivery of flavors. Notes of yeast and malt were most obvious, with a touch of barley and corn. Slightly bitter aftertaste. Worth a try if you are in the Sault Ontario area.

A pretty uneventful beer. A little murky gold colour, with a head that quickly rises, then quickly fades too nothing. Little malt and yeast smell. Tastes stickly sweet, then vanishes when swallowed. Hey, no aftertaste. Are hops used in this beer? I would assume not. Slightly thicker than water mouthfeel. Not very drinkable. I think this brewery needs some improving. Why couldn't their be a good brewpub in the Sault?

A staple here in Northern Ontario. This can be found in every bar from here to Sudbury, to Thunder Bay. Great taste with a hint of hops and malty flavours, although hops are most present. Goes down great at any time of the year, and is a favourite amongst locals and foreigners alike.
