Notes/Commercial Description:
We pronounce it “sta-leep-ah”; you pronounce it how you like. STLIPA, which is the acronym for St. Louis India Pale Ale, is actually a DIPA (Double or Imperial IPA, double the stats of a traditional IPA). We hope it’s a “sleepe” that you’ll include in your set of favorite DIPA’s from one of the best beer cities in the world St. Louis. Hops- Sterling, Cascade, Mt. Hood, Willamette, Chinook.

Pours a golden amber with a tall thick head.

Smells of lemony citrus, flowers, fruity yeast (banana?), and a buttery character that reminds me of an ESB.

Taste is spicy floral hops, again that buttery ESB character. Slightly unusual but pretty good.

Lots of carbonation, doesn't feel like a DIPA but nice and drinkable.

Pretty good beer, not nearly as hoppy as you'd expect for a DIPA but nice and easy to drink.

Presentation: 16oz heavy glass bottle; nice label with info on the beer. No best-by date, sadly. Thanks to Russ G. for the chance to try this!

Appearance: Into my laser-etched Harp imperial tulip, this pours a somewhat hazy pale medium orange hue, capped with a large, creamy antique ivory cap which shows good retention and big sheets of lacing.

Smell: Very nice blend of hoppy aromas, balancing piney, herbal, citrus, and (non-citrus) fruity notes together. The hop blend (Sterling, Cascade, Mt. Hood, Willamette, Chinook) is perhaps a bit odd, but it really works here...everything blends and melds together quite nicely, and lacks the 2-dimensional nature that many IPAs and DIPAs seem to have. No real malt presence, just a hint of sugary sweetness.

Taste: Fruity (though not overly citric) and darkly herbal hops lead here. A bit of pine and a whisper of ctirus. Very light malt character, but the malt and soft-yet-noticeably-warming alcohol presence make this feel substantial.

Mouthfeel: Rich and soft on the palate, lacking the harshness of a lot of DIPAs.

Overall: One of the better IPAs/DIPAs I've had. It's not up to the Pliny level (since that's the bar that many IPAs are measured against), but it's got more depth and complexity than many, and the soft mouthfeel, along with a nicely balanced (but not harsh) bitterness and moderate alcohol levels are extremely present. This may or may not be fresh; I'll definitely pick up some next time I'm done in St. Louis if it's around, however.

Poured into a pint glass from the bottle.

Pours a nice hazy and cloudy orange with some copper hues. There is a nice one inch head that forms and is very sticky.

Aroma starts off with some nice fresh citrus notes. Notes of tangerines and some mild grapefruit. There is some nice slight dankness to it with some slight sweet pine. Biscuit malts are nice and bready and balances the hops very nicely.

Flavor starts with nice citrusy notes. Similar to the nose there is some slight dankness and hop juice sweetness. There is a nice bready and earthy grain note in the background. This balances the hops slightly but does not overwhelm the fact that this is a nice hoppy brew. Body is medium/light with some nice carbonation a sticky hop resin note and a nice bitter finish.

Overall UCBC is another great up and coming brewery in STL. Awesome hop profile that is dank but also refreshing, grassy and herbal. Well done.

I had this on cask at Urban Chestnut.

Served in a snifter.

A: Poured a mildly chill-hazed orange color which was fairly bright overall in its disposition. There was a slight head and some mild web-like lacing.

S: I got straight up fresh orange juice infused with hops on the nose with added candi sugar.

T: This was very nice and leaned towards the fruit side of the spectrum as opposed to a hop forward one. Citrus galore and downright fresh!

M: I liked the low carbonation bill here as well as the thick, mildly syrupy texture. A slight bitter bite on the end soothed the tongue without attacking it. The sweet, fruit lingering was substantial as well as the lacing left on the glass.

O: This was excellent and I would easily have this one again. Urban Chestnut continues to impress!

Poured from the cask a cloudy orange-gold color with two fingers of sticky white head.

Aroma of grapefruit and light caramel malts.

Tasted of grapefruit, light citrus, and caramel malts.

Medium bodied with a lighter carbonation.

A tasty IIPA from Urban Chestnut.
