Our flagship lager, pronounced ‘zv-ick-el’, is an unfiltered, unpasteurized, German classic that finishes as a smooth-drinking, vitamin rich (from the yeast), naturally cloudy bier.

A super smooth, crisp, refreshing lager. It may not punch you in the mouth with flavor, but there is something to be said about it's excellent execution of subtle flavors and smooth taste.

Would absolutely purchase and drink again.

True to the heartland of Germany, the taste that put pilsner on the brewing map takes up residency with these St. Louis beer makers.

Its bright golden-straw color gleams with racing carbonation that shines with bright clarity. A cottony swath of foam accompanies the rim and explodes with floral hop aromatics. Honeysuckle, orange blossom, citrus and orchard fruit abound while the undertow of fresh baked bread and confectioner's sweetness play softly underneath.

While a memory of sweetness resides on the middle palate, the lager dries beautifully to a crisp and wafer-thin, cracker-like quality. Slight honey and powdered sugar dissolves on the palate and the floral perfume turns spicy, grassy and wonderfully herbal in balance.

Peppery, pleasantly grassy and with a herbal bite, the finish comes quick and dry. Its refreshing taste gives the medium-light lager an effervescent tingle with aftertaste of floral bouquet and pepper.

Golden hued with great clarity. Minimal head. Aroma is slightly nutty with a bit of pale malt. Mouthfeel is salty and light. Flavor is strong in terms of light malt and somewhat salty and buttery. There's just something underwhelming here. This is not one of my favorites.

Pours a hazed amber with a thumb of cream colored head. Stays hazy (as it should), great lacing & above average head retention

S: Breadyness, grassiness, pears & perfumy hops

T: Breadyness, faint yeastiness, slight peppery notes & pear up front. Orange peel, white grapes, a hint of lemon, wet grain & more bready notes as this warms. Finishes grassy, grainy with pears & hay notes, some faint white grape & juicy fruit notes

MF: Medium bodied, slight carbonation

Drinks so easy, compares favorably with most of the kellerbiers I had in Germany. I would buy this if they actually distributed in SW Mizzou

This beer pours a cloudy, light bodied pale pale gold in color with an effervescent and smooth bright white head. The nose is light and pretty straight forward. It features blond German esque malt, slight hop character, and a bit of corn as well. It smells like a fresh helles. The flavors are a little more complex. The pale malt offers a slight sweetness off the bat. The bitterness is mellow and you get plenty of that German helles character with a touch of yeast, pretty spot on for a Zwickel. It drinks light in body with good carbonation. Overall this is pretty good for the style. The freshness is probably this beer's greatest strongpoint and it's hard to find this type of unfiltered lager fresh.

Although just a basic lager, if I had to choose a simple lager to drink, this is where I'd go.

First had: on tap at Teresa's Next Door Bar, Wayne, PA

Poured a clear golden yellow with a small, delicate, white head. Grassy aroma, pale malts, and light yeast. More of the same in the taste, crisp, light, grassy, crackery pale malts; not much in the way of hops, but there was a little bit of spicy bitterness in the aftertaste. Light bodied and refreshing, and easily drinkable.

500ml bottle sealed with pressure cap.

poured into HF wine stem.

Appearance: slighty cloudy; medium straw yellow bodied beer. This beer sports a giant and clumpy bone white head. This beer has great head retention. Spotty lacing is left all over the outside of the glass.

Smell: This beer has bready malts that imparts a slightly sweet aroma. Slightly fruity yeast and very mellow floral hop profile. Toasted and grainy malts also come to mind.

Taste: Really nice malt profile flavors here- bready, biscuity, toasty grains and cereal grains notes are prodominate. Also tasting some honey. Minerals and well water come to mind also. A nice general fruity yeast presence is found at the end of each swallow with a light floral hop bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel: light bodied beer with medium carbonation levels. The carbonation is surprisingly creamy with a slight lager dryness at the finish. This beer is unbelieveably crushable; drinkablity is seriously off the charts. This would be fantastic in summer because it is such a crisp and clean lager.

Overall: This is only the third zwickel that I have ever sampled. The first thing that I thought of when I took my first wiff and taste of this beer was a beer that is similiar to an Octoberfest style beer. If I would have gotten a blind pour and did not know who the brewer was... I would have guessed that Dan Carey brewed this beer. And we all know that Dan Carey is the master when it comes to brewing German lagers. This is definately a high quality german lager and it is on the same level as any of Dan's German lagers that he brews. I give this beer high regards, so get a sample of this brew from Urban Chestnut! What a gem!

Served in a tumbler.

Not sure where he got it, but my boy Matt hooked me up with a bottle o' this stuff during our last get-together. It pours a cloudy straw topped by a finger of lightly cream-white foam. The nose comprises cracked wheat, light biscuit, and grass. The taste brings in more of the same, but everything comes through dry, listless, and strangely bitter (that isn't to say that the bitterness was necessarily unexpected, but rather it was unexpectedly expressed). The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, an okay beer, but it just didn't sit too well with me (nor with anyone else present).

Cloudy and lightly yellow, the pour was careful and didn't leave much head, but the lacing was pretty good.

Smelled nicely of yeast, that was the primary smell. A little maltiness peeked through.

A bit of hops accented a bready malt background, along with plenty of yeast and a touch of spiciness.

The body was pretty thick, yet light and easy to drink. Carbonation was perfect.

Really this beer was quite delicious and a really interesting find. I will be back to the loop district again and I certainly hope this one stays on the menu in the future. Excellent brew!

A: Pours a hazy copper color with a firm head that fades to some lacing.

S: Aroma of some malt sweetness, mild fruit and citrus, a bit of grain and spice in the background.

T: The taste is a subtle mix of malt and fruity sweetness, with a bit of grain and spice in the background. Mild bitterness and the finish is quite dry.

F: Has a fairly light body, crisp, smooth and refreshing. Nicely balanced.

O: Enjoyable beer. A very sessionable beer that goes down easy.

Pours a hazy, copper color. 1/4 inch head of a white color. Good retention and slight lacing. Smells of pale malt, slight sweet malt, hint of yeast, and a hint of hops. Fits the style of a Keller Bier / Zwickel Bier. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of pale malt, hint of yeast, slight sweet malt, and a hint of hop. Overall, good appearance, blend, and body.

I had this for the first time after drinking mass market american lagers so I reserved my opinion until I could taste it on a clean tongue.

Perhaps I had a bad batch here but I find this to be undrinkable swill. It has a thick cloying heavy moutfeel, with an estery and phenolic finish. The more I drink it, the more I dislike it. Tastes like a hot fermented amateur home brew cream ale. The only positive quality is that it has great head.

I'll try it again in the future and change my rating if it's any different, but suffice to say I'm very disappointed.

Served this Zwickel style Bier in a Stein at the brewery. Poured a hazy copper color, produced a excellent creamy white head, great retention and ample lacing. The aroma consists of sweet malted grain, yeast and hops. Moderate body, this traditional style beer had an off the charts mouthfeel- one of the smoothest beers I have ever had- . A base of sweet pale malt, well balanced, crisp and clean- balanced well with hops. Excellent Session beer- I really enjoyed this. Prost!

Bought a 64 oz Growler of this from Cicero's in The Loop (St. Louis), MO for $17. Poured from the Growler into my Clear Creek Livestock Farm Pint Glass and enjoyed 4 back to back with GeoffTheAleMan.

1st time having a growler and first time having a Zwickel since Wien, Austria.

Aroma- Has a high grain and malt aroma from the start. Sweet and perfect for the style.

Appearance- Pours a 3 finger head that has medium retention. The body is a crystal clear, pale gold color and leaves minimal, sudsy lace.

Flavor- Very malty, has a bit of sweet taste, clean, and easy drinking. No real hops flavors or anything else. Finish is even light.

Mouthfeel- Light bodied, Medium-High Carbonation, Smooth, and doesn't leave much around.

Overall Impression- This wasn't what I remember as the Zwickel style but I'll take it as it is. I looked up common attributes for this style and this beer almost everything fit every category. There are much better brews from U.C. but I enjoyed this greatly. Had no other choice since coming from a Growler.

I love a good lager, it is not always my style, but a solid well made version can be very rewarding. This one is exceptional. It is slightly hazy, and golden. Effervescent with a white head. The smell is of bread and hops....slight peppery hop scent, and very clean. The flavor is crisp, with a little up front sweetness and breads malt. Wonderful.

On tap at the hotel bar at the Renaissance in St. Louis.

A - Poured a hazy, golden yellow color with a small, pillowy white head of foam. It left sudsy trails of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled yeasty with some floral notes and caramel.

T - Good spicy bite upfront with some sweet caramel and yeastiness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A light to medium bodied lager.

O - This is a pretty tasty beer. I might have to have more at the bar.

I picked this one up on a trade. It was pretty unexciting really. I have a few more from this brewery but this one was a run of the mill lager.

Appearance: What you would expect from a lager. Golden foamy quintessential "beer" appearance.

Smell: Not much going on here, some malts grassy notes, some bready notes in there but fairly mild.

Taste: Blah, it really isn't all that great. I think AAL' almost do a better job of this style. It was not really all that tasty,It was a foamy soapy tasting mess.

Overall: Not impressed with this one. I wouldn't seek it out again. But then again I am not crazy about the style to begin with.

My first go at this local favorite of A-B's backyard. Heard terrific reviews, hope they stand up.

500 ML bottle that is supposed to have a bottled-on date on the neck, but I can't find one. $9.00 per 4-pack.

A -- Hazy light gold color with a dense white head.

S -- Bready, yeasty nose with light, spicy hops back. Mild DMS toward the end.

T -- Light breadiness up front with some spicy hops in the middle and a crackery, grainy finish with spicy hop bitterness lingering through the otherwise clean aftertaste.

M -- Mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a lightly crisp finish and a light to light-medium body.

O -- As the beer warms a little more I realize that it's really reminding me of Spaten Helles from years back and Munich trips. The breadiness is definitely a yeasty character more than a melanoidin breadiness, but a little of that comes through in the aftertaste. Overall, this beer is a very good rendition of a Bavarian lager and will stand up to the best. I hope to be enjoying more of this over the summer months to come!
