We affectionately refer to the first beer in our Revolution series of modern, American craft beer, as our unusual little bird. It’s a little on the flighty side @ 5.4% ABV, and it’s a little on the wacky side because we brew it with finely milled chestnuts (genus castanea …for you nut freaks), Willamette hops, and we ferment it with a Bavarian Weissbier yeast strain. All of these nuances contribute to its ‘nutty’ personality.

Bottle from trade. Amber pour with thick white head. Smell is sweet, nutty. Taste is unique - that earthiness from the chestnuts, some roasted malt flavor, cotton candy sweetness, banana. Probably wouldnt' do this one again. Chestnuts + beer not my thing but can see how others might like it.

Copper penny color. Just a thin wisp of carbonation covers half of the top of this brew. Pretty good clarity. Aroma is definitely nutty and malty with a hint of banana esters. The front of the palate is very nutty and on the back end I get the banana flavor. Mouthfeel is pretty smooth and refreshing, but maybe a bit too thin.

On tap at Blue Dog in Lansdale, PA.

Poured a brick color with a think white head. The aroma of the chestnuts was noticeable but not cloying. The taste was very balanced, artisanal and delicious. The chestnuts actually became more noticeable towards the end of the beer. Very balanced and smooth. The "finely milled" chestnuts certainly contribute positively to this ale.

Overall this brew is delicious and unique... I've never quite had anything like it.

This tawny amber, semi-opaque ale brewed with chestnuts pours with a thick head of fine, off-white suds. Lace is lovely and delicate.

Aroma is uniquely roasty and nutty. Kinda sweet, even, but very appealing and enticing.

Flavor profile is pleasing to the palate and well-nuanced. I get a hint of malty and lightly toasty nuts (chestnut?) and a wisp of light citrus hops at the finish. I drank this one almost room temperature, and it was a delicious and worthwhile experience. Very good!

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Clear deep orange. Nice off-white head. Contiguous wisps on the surface. Medium collar.

Smell - Very phenolic. Clove, banana, some hops. Definitely nutty.

Taste - Same phenolic character. Oppressive here. Sharp flavor. Strong yeastiness. Nuttiness is less pronounced.

Mouthfeel - A little harsh on the sharp yeastiness. Medium body.

Overall - Not a pleasant beer after a few sips.

Pours amber with a thumb cream colored head. Never really drop bright, great lacing & good head retention

S: Nutty notes, plus sulphur & pear

T: Nutty, pretty darn dry with hints of sulphur up front, a bit of brown bread as well. Faint pear & fig notes as this warms, dryness & some leafy hops as this warms. Finishes fruitty, dry, with a hint of sulphur & nuttyness, even some sour notes

MF: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation

Drinks okay, kind of middling as Brown ales go, you can taste the chestnuts to be sure. Was hoping for better on this one

Poured this 16.7 oz. Euro bottle into a Sierra Nevada tulip hops glass. No date (reviewed from notes). The body was hazy orange/amber. The head was off white. The fine, dense cap remained.

The smell was banana nut bread. Lemony. Nice.

The taste had a pleasant nutty bitterness. Citrus. The flavor mirrors the aroma nicely. Light creaminess. Not overpowering in any element. Finishes semi-dry with plenty of sweetness in the middle.

The body was medium with adequate carbonation.

A: Amber, slight copper in colour, semi -opaque, foggy (half clouded), little carbonation, no head just some yellowish foam which fades.

S: Banana, spices, chocolate, earthy, some stinky cheese, malt, caramel, nutmeg, allspice, toasted bread that’s medium wood brown, amber malts.

T: Herbal, yeasty, bready, delicious. Sour dough, sour quality and a little sweetness, vegetal like and somewhat fruity. Corriander, very much a quality that reminds me of a good weizen bock, toasty yeasty aftertaste. Love this one. Little bitterness in the aftertaste.

M: Medium bready body, medium low carbonation.

O: I have been really looking forward to having this one ever since I picked it up at Whole foods in St. Louis, MO. Still fresh tasting over a month later here in China. Has some great Weizen bock qualities which happens to be one of my favourite styles. Very flavourful, worth a try if you can get hold of it. Great by itself, it would go well with medium aged cheeses.

Great dark copper color with lots of bubbles and head, bunches of roasted malt and chestnut in the nose and flavor, but very thin in mouthfeel. Very drinkable, liked it a bunch.

got this as an extra in a trade. the size is perfect, poured into a pint. good clarity, dark amber color. i got the slightest hazelnut in the nose. very faint hazelnut in the taste, but it was there. A very refreshing dunkel that offered a great break from all the big beers I've been drinking lately. An overall good beer and I'm glad I tried it.

Pours a hazed slighty orange tinted hazlenut brown, little to no head, only some off-white rings on the outer edges. Mild nose with faint roasted nuts, light caramel and a somewhat baked dessert profile - brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg. Taste adds a splash of floral and herbal qualities, but the main notes are still the lightly toasted nuts, light caramel and nougat like sweetness. Lighter side of medium bodied, lightly watery and under-carbonated. Some positive notes, but washed out by the thin body and weak scent and flavor profile.

Tried this beer due to the recommendation made by the beer store clerk, and poured this into a standard half liter German dimple glass. The brew makes a solid three finger thick foam crown of a mild khaki/off white color, and the body is hazy, translucent, and caramel in color.

The aroma is sweet in the way of toffee and butter, kind of earthy and veggie, with a mild metallic quality.

Taste wise this is very nutty, earthy, somewhat dark fruit and yeasty esters with a tinge of caramel.

Feels medium in body, a little carbonated but not too much, and wetting to the palate.

Thanks to Lukahn (Reddit) for this unique beer.

Pours a lighter bubbly fizzy head that hits about 1/2 a finger and fades at a med pace with some foamy lacing, over mostly hazy orange-red color.

Nose is interesting, some roasted chestnuts, toasted nuts, caramelized brown sugar, a light raw earthy green like nut aroma, toasted walnut like as well, light molasses and cola syrup, a weird herbal spice like aroma, a light payday like candy covered nuts, very unique.

Taste starts with a cola root like earthy flavor, a light tanginess with that. chewy nuts, earthy nuts, light toasted chestnut, little peanut like as well. More like earthy tangy root flavors. It has a bigger sweetness, with some caramelized brown sugar, molasses, candied walnuts, caramel, etc. A light bready yeasty flavor finishes it. Finish is a bit drier but still fairly sweet, a light ester like booze quality with a hint of a tingle, some sticky syrup, toasted and candied chestnuts, and light tangy flavor lingering.

Mouth is med bodied, little syrupy, decent carb.

Overall OK but not great. Very interesting and unique, but not a beer i could drink much of as it has a lot of weird flavors for a beer.

A- murky brown with red and orange hues. A light, white head that doesn't stick around long.

S- huge malt and chestnut aroma. Big time nutty aroma lets me know exactly what is in store. Tree bark and other earthy notes make their way.

T- a fun and interesting blend of Euro malts and hops with the chestnut addition. Willamette hops really pave a nice balance with the intense nut character. Different, yet delicious.

M- A bit on the light side for the style, but honestly, it makes it doesn't abide by any particular style. Smoothness helps the drinkability. Would make for a nice beer to have a few rounds of at the local pub.

O- my first from this brewery, and i have to say that I am impressed. Not normally a style that I seek out, but most definitely enjoyed and would have again. Probably the strongest nut character I have had, but they found a way to really make it work.

Winged Nut pours out a nutty light brown with a fluffy white head perched on top. The beer's aroma is both complex and inviting. Thanks to the use of that Bavarian weissbier yeast strain, Winged Nut gives off wonderfully sweet banana esters. Behind the yeasty aromas you're also greeted by the light and dry pop of the finely milled chestnuts the beer is brewed with. The beer tastes similar to the way it smells - a wonderful balance between the sweet yeast notes, some rich Munich malts, and the dry chestnuts on the finish of the beer. A lot of nut beers are one and done, but UCBC finds a way to make it a session beer.

Served this beer on tap, at the brewery, in a pint glass. Poured a amber orange color, produced an average white head, excellent retention and lacing. The aroma of this spiced beer consisted of sweet malted grain, and some spice- nutmeg perhaps? Medium in body, this ale had a backbone of sweet malted grain and some spicy nutmeg. Brewed with chestnuts, however I can't really detect much of a nutty flavor. Finishes with a citric hop flair. Overall, great session beer- Unique- something I would order again. Prost!

Enjoyed on-tap @ the 360 Bar on the RoofTop of the Downtown, St. Louis Hilton for $6.50. Tapped from the Bright Blue/Orange UCBC Tap Handle into a 16oz UCBC Snifter.

Aroma- Has the best/highest amount of spice present from the beginning. Also, sweet malts and a strong caramel aroma is present too. Nothing too aggressive but well balanced and portrays the best aroma possible for this style.

Appearance- Received with a 2 finger head that has good retention. Is a light brown/melted caramel color in the body and has no clarity at all! The lacing is huge here.

Flavor- Can tell is was brewed with chestnuts! As a very sweet background and base of the drink that you can tell is only brewed with the best combination of malts. The bitterness is lower at the end and nothing really overpowering in the drink. Very subtle and smooth.

Mouthfeel- Medium Bodied, Very Light Carbonation, Nice Slickness in the drink, and leaves good spice around after the drink.

Overall Impression- First of all, if I were to have a beer on-tap @ my home, this one would be in my house all the time! Perfect balanced beer with some of the best spices added. I would recommend ANYONE trying this one from UCBC before any of their others and then you can branch out from here. Have had this one @ over 6 beer bars (including UCBC) and the quality, taste, and results are always the same! A+

With the understated complexity of traditional Dunkelweiss delivering waves of malted grain and yeast character, the Urban Chestnut brewers take upon their namesake with actual chestnuts to the brewing process for a taste that's just as genuine as it is true to heart.

Rusty garnet with the pour, the common wheat haze casts an ominous translucent glow onto the eye. Its creamy sheet of foam sheds malty-sweet aromas with the taste of faint toast, cocoa nib, light coffee and hard candy. Its sweet taste is bready and almost cake-like as complex banana, peppercorn, clove and, ...yes- nutty flavor.

Relaxing its malty substrate a bit, the sweetness persists and gives the middle palate a nutty, grape and spicy middle. Cola nut, light toffee and toast frame the middle as the taste trends mild and homogenous. Peppercorn and chestnut mellow the taste and give balance to the banana bread undercurrent.

Finishing with a slight cola-like tack, the beer's semi-dry and slightly bitter finish is just shy of the malty-dry finish of authentic German dark wheat ale and with the bitter hop presence to compromise. Yet there's the soothing taste of chestnut to give a buttery and toasty elegance that's not often reconciled in even craft beer.

Amber in color with a moderate haze and a thin head. The smell is classic dunked...yeast and wheat. Clean. I didn't get much chestnut at first, but it comes forth as you enjoy the beer. Dryish. Nice wheat and hop character. Enjoyable.

On-tap at a craft/local-oriented beer bar in the St. Louis airport. Not really sure at the time of tasting what the beer was. Tasted 28 September 2013, reviewed from notes.

Pours medium amber, a little bit of orange and gold. Brought with 1.5 fingers of off-white yellowish head. Excellent lacing.

Smell is nutty, a little dry, a bit woody. See taste, as it's very similar.

Taste is similar. Both the smell and the taste are super nutty. Rich, lightly toasted nuts. Kinda grainy and unobtrusive behind that. Has a character that I'm having a hard time putting a name on. Almost like a lagery crispness.

Medium-light body, good carbonation, sort of prickly, varied, and pleasant. Carbonation is stable throughout.

Like an amber ale with nuts; and I mean a lot of nuts. Tasty and rather unique - I mean, I've had some beers with "nut" in the name, but none of them compare to this nutty one. Feels slightly light, in color and body, for this kind of beer, but not in the flavor; reminds me of a black IPA in that way. Heavily nutty in a really nice way.

Appropriately, pours a light chestnut color, only a pretty thin white head.

Aroma is much like a saison or a tripel--very yeasty, some mild spice, maybe faint nuttiness, not a whole lot going on. Fairly dry.

Taste is sweeter, nuts are more apparent but not super rich. Lots of yeast and spice again, also an odd metallic/iron like taste.

Mouthfeel is solid, good carbonation and a pretty full body.

Decent beer, hoped for more, definitely wish there were more nutty flavors.

A - pours an amberish orange color with a one finger head that leaves lacing down the glass

S - nose is sweet cookie malts with some spices in the mix

T - taste is similar. Starts off with bready and cookie malts. These are mixed in with a little but of spiciness (nutmeg?). Ends With a really small amount of citrus hops.

M - good body with nice carbonation

D - really nice beer from urban chestnut. I have made this a staple in my st Louis repertoire.

Poured into a pint glass from a pint sized bottle.

Pours a really nice hazy slightly orange amber color with some golden hues. A nice foamy off-white ehad pops up to about 0.5 inch. It recedes at a moderate pace.

Aroma strats off with toasty bready malt notes, followed by some nice slight grassy and herbal hop backed notes. Then more bread notes and some earthy grain mixed in with some nuttiness. There is also some nice slight phenolic notes with some cloves and some spice.

Flavor starts off more grassy and refreshing. Clean toasty malt notes follow with some good grain components. The hop notes play really well in the background with some herbal and slightly citrusy components. There is also a bready and slightly sweet notes with some nice nutty notes and some yeasty sweetness. Mouthfeel is nice and crisp with good carbonation and a nice refreshing mix of malt, nuts and hops.

This is one of my favorite UCBC brews. Very flavorful and easy to drink. Nice hop notes mixed with great malt notes and an interesting infusion of chestnuts.
