American IPA |  6.10% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
A beer we are describing as a ‘Bavarian IPA’. Brewed and dry-hopped with a variety of Hallertau ‘hopfen’… instead of the usual and more citric hop varieties of most American IPA’s… gives this beer a decidedly German twist.

S: Aroma is fairly mild with some malt sweetness, fresh grain, bit of fruit and a trace of spice.

T: Taste is a nice blend of some caramel sweetness, fruit and fresh grain.

F: Has a nice easy bitterness and a dry finish. Fairly medium body, nice crispness and smooth.

O: Very well crafted. This is a unique IPA that is well worth checking out.

500ml bottle poured into a Brasserie de Silly tulip. No bottled on date.

A: Pours two fingers of foamy white head with a hazy orange body (awesome color for an IPA). Lots of patchy rings of lacing with a big dollop of head in the middle.

S: Up front lots of grassy, plant like hops followed by a strong note of lavender. Like smelling grandma's garden. Some sweet biscuit malt pokes out in the back.

T: It's all about the hops here, guys. A very similar hop profile to the nose; dried grass, fleshy plants, lemon tartness and lavender. Backbone of biscuity malts with a lingering hop bitterness.

Mf: Medium/thin feel with a drying and coarse texture. Bitter around the edges. Good drinkability. Crisp and thirst quenching.

O: Overall a very enjoyable IPA with a unique hop profile. Being more used to the American hop varieties this was really fun to try and pick up notes I wasn't used to getting from hops. Drinks quite easily as it's not a brash hop profile like most American IPAs. I'll finish the bottle with ease. Recommended.

Reviewing from notes after enjoying on tap at Bier Station on 1/20/14. Poured into a small Belgian tulip glass.

Appearance - Sunny golden in hue, with darker notes of maize yellow and a slight hue that makes it impossible to see clearly through the body. ATop the body sits a soapy head of about two fingers thick, the color of bone white and just a few larger bubbles, presumably from the pour. Retention is excellent, with the head never completely disappearing, but instead fading to a thick film and drift-like buildup about a half finger thick around the sides of the glass. Lacing is pronounced and full of small mottled spots streaking the sides of the glass.

Smell - Some initial hints of citrus zest, but that quickly takes a back seat to more herbal and grassy hop overtones. Some notes of pepper and spice as well, but they don't overpower the herbal bitterness that is predominant. Some faint hints of pale malt are hiding in the background and providing some heft to this hoppy concoction.

Taste - Again the herbs and spice are up front, with faint white pepper, and baby garden green bitterness, even some dandelion greens and milk bittering. But here, there is definitely a subtle fruit element that gives the impression of a sweetness that eludes the tongue. Some faint pungency and the bitterness is a bit more than I bargained for, to be honest. Notes of fresh biscuit and water cracker come through from the malt base, giving it a decidedly pilsner-y feel. Perhaps that's a side effect of the German hops?

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied and moderate-to-low carbonation, with a decided crispness along the palate and a mostly dry finish.

Overall, an American IPA that doesn't fit into the standard mold, but in a definitely good way. A nice change-up from the citrus and fruit bombs that seem to be gaining in popularity as the IPA style explodes. As noted, the finish was a bit more biting to the tastebuds with the bitter factor that I would have liked, but otherwise a very solid beer.

a nice german American hybrid here, something id like to see a lot more of. pours a hazy pale gold color with a robust airy bone white head and inch and a half high. the nose is german pilsener malts all the way, bready and dusty in aroma and taste. the malts are light enough to let the American hops shine through in all their glory. fruity and fresh and bright, more than just bitter and balance, as you get in traditional german beers. hops smell and taste delicious here, oily and bigger, not tempered much by the malt at all. this drinks very nicely. I would like to see more carbonation here, it would make this beer outstanding in all facets. the body is just medium, but feels a little lighter, like there might be some wheat malt in here. this is a marriage made in heaven, and more german malt American hop style beers need to come out, there is endless possibility here.

Appearance: The golden-colored liquid is capped by a nice head that leaves a nice lacing pattern behind

Smell: Aromatic with both grassy and citrusy tones

Taste: Moreso than in the aroma, the citrusy flavors pop out, up front, with the grassy tones appearing after the swallow; the malt plays a neutral role in the flavor profile

Mouthfeel: Medium body with low to moderate carbonation; a touch flabby

Overall: A very intriguing IPA that combines both German and American hop elements; kudos to the brewer for the creativity here
