Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.40%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Nosferatu (Bird of Death) aka Count Orlok was THE German Count Dracula. He was a blood-sucking vampire…but being German he must’ve enjoyed beer too, right? We believe it is so and thus have created a Black Pumpkin Wheat Ale in his honor…a “bier noir” if you will.

Dark black in color. Not too much light will get through this brew. Just a trace of white foam rests on top. I get a lot of clove on the nose, so much so it drowns out all else. Maybe just a hint of dark malt on the aroma. The flavor is overwhelmed by the clove. I get a bit of pumpkin and cinnamon, but too much clove. Mouthfeel is moderate as we do have spices, but alcohol seems low.

Nice beer, but not enough depth. There's a subtle roast aroma, but it's too light. The wheat malt flavor is a bit dull and the pumpkin is fine, but nothing new or interesting. Easy drinking and smooth.

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep brown, almost black. Thin collar. A few islands.

Smell - Incredibly spiced. Clove. That's almost all I smell.

Taste - A bit of caramel. Some pumpkin. Tons of clove and a little bitter.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Not enough to compensate for the spice. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Unpleasant spiciness.

Pours ebony with thumb of cream colored head. Above average head retention & lacing

S: Cloves & nutmeg, cinnamon

T: Follows the nose, a little dryness, a little squashyness up front. Dryness, faint metallic taste, not too bad, I get this a lot in this style beer, a little green apple taffy as well as this warms, some Band-Aid as well, a little cinnamon leaks in as well, more squashyness. Finishes dry with some pumpkin pie spice, some pear, some juicy fruit

MF: Light/medium body, a little too much carbonation for my liking

This beer isn't quite what I expected, but better than I expected, different can be good, but not one I would buy again..

This is a very interesting take on the pumpkin beer. Its darker than any other pumpkin beer I've had, pouring out a very dark brown, almost black. The scent hits you with pumpkin pie spices and plenty of nutmeg and some cloves in there. Its got a good amount of carbonation as well, but did not affect my personal tastes. The flavor is what gets me, in a bad way sometimes, with pumpkin beers. This one tasted rather great, finishing with nearly a pumpkin pie creaminess to it. Some pumpkin beers tend to have an overwhelming anise flavor that I'm not fond of, yet this one avoided that. If you want something different from your standard pumpkin beer, this one is a great choice.

Poured from a bottle into a Spiegelau tulip.

A - Jet black with dark brown at the outermost edges. Quickly dissipating head made of small, fizzy bubbles.

S - Mostly clove, backed with a dry, earthy pumpkin aroma.

T - Typical light, wheaty bitterness with predominating clove followed by cinnamon. Dry, lightly spiced finish.

M - Typical pale wheat ale mouthfeel.

O - A little too much clove on the palette, but nonetheless a unique brew. For a pale wheat ale drinker, this is a must-try and will most likely be a favorite. Unfortunately this is not my style.

Fall seasonal from Urban Chestnut.Bottle says Revolution Series #666.Pours a jet black with slightly browned edges and 1 inch of slightly off white foam.Aroma consists of a mix of earthy pumpkin, lightly roasted malts and Fall baking spices(nutmeg, cinnamon).Taste follows suit with an initial wheat presence, light roastiness and meaty pumpkin mid-palate and the usual dry spice pumpkin ale finish.Body is a little thin and a tad cloying but decent.Overall,a pretty interesting take on the style.
