A: slight haze; burnt orange in color; with a fairly aggressive pour, got a 1 finger head that dissipated almost immediately to a patchy film; moderate lacing;

S: not much aroma at all; a little dank pine and caramel malt;

T; taste is also subdued; caramel malts up front; a fruity sweetness from med palate through the finish; no bitterness;

M: a little thin; moderate carbonation;

O: not enough malt to be an English IPA and not enough hops to be an American IPA;

12 ounce bottle, w/o any freshness info that I can find.

Pours clouded medium amber, looser lite khaki head.

Some mint and tea on the nose.

Malty with ample caramel. Too sweet for the style, hops present but way in the rear.

Meh, not really doing it for me.

A: Murky sunkist orange/over-ripened mango red hue. Very fluffy white head with excellent retention.

S: Earthy, woodsy, peppery. Orange citrus and vanilla undertones.

M: Slick and oily, medium body. Medium-high carbonation. Some pithiness at the end.

T: Prickly pine and bright grapefruit combined with a moderate minerality give the impression this was aged in wine barrels. Metallic afterbite and spicy hops. Strong grass notes. Distinct patches of toasted caramel with orange bursts of sweetness.

O: More of an American/English hybrid if you ask me. The Liberty and Magnum hops speak to its European heritage, as well as its pronounced malt flavor, and combined give it a pleasant aroma. Not a hop bomb for sure, but the malts can carry the hop oils nicely...perhaps too nicely as the Amarillo hops gives off too much metallic that hampers the enjoyment of the hop bitterness.

I'm interested in comparing this beer to Maine's Peeper, as the hop bills are nearly identical, save for the substitution of Cascade for Liberty.

I have had some really good beers lately and maybe this has tainted my perspective a bit. This is not a horrible beer, its just not up to others standards. I saw it frequently in a local grocery store and then all of a sudden they were gone, they had this one stored in the mixed six pack area and I needed one more to try so I figured what the hell. It has not date that I could tell so this one may have been older and thus the hop presence that was there had dissipated with the passage of time.

Appearance: Standard, reddish golden color, nothing outstanding.

Smell: Not a lot going on, you could tell that it was an ale, but more of a pale ale than an IPA in smell, a little on the malty side.

Taste: Same thing, more Pale Ale, I think the hops had died really, it wasn't a bad beer and if it were not 6.2%, I would categorize it as a session "tasting" beer. Not that I would want to, but it is not in the league of others, not really boozy but nothing to brag about.

Overall: Fair, maybe better than that, especially if it were fresh, and it may have been but I will never know that for certain, but by the absence of the beer in the store in six packs I assume it wasn't a big seller so this is just unloading the rest of the stock one by one. I am not unhappy about trying it, especially since I scored some really expensive beers in singles for way less than the going price. I guess the store wasn't paying attention to what was going on, or broke one out of a $12 four pack, so I lucked up and got the other three, so I needed three more to fill out the pack. I feel like I got a very good deal overall, so this mediocre beer was the only let down and it was not THAT bad really.
