Don't mean for this to be a back-handed compliment, but I'm not a big fan of Port City. I think their IPA is average. Not a fan of their Pale Ale or Optimal Wit. Their Porter is nice, but nothing too special.

Their Maniacal Double IPA is unbelievable. Had this last night at Tavern 64 as part of DC Beer Week events. Admittedly, my expectations were low, but this beer was as good as -- if not better than -- On the Wings of Armageddon. Making the DC Metro Area home to the best one-two Double IPA punch in America.

I'm not quite sure I've seen a beer excel at all factors quite like this beer. The appearance is amazing. Beautiful golden orange color with the foamiest white head ever. The best thing about the appearance is, even when the beer is half finished, a little agitation and the head fluffs right away. Amazing.

The smell is probably the "weakest" feature here. But, with this beer, it's "weakness" would be a strength any other brew. Yes, you get the hops -- for me it was more pineapple and mango, then grapefruit and other citrus. You get a little of everything. But, the extra pop is missing. It's not a misstep - just not as aromatic as other options.

Then you get to the taste -- and I was blown away. Tropical fruits -- such potent hops. For a second it was like I was drinking a banana -- no joke. Also, I don't get why people are criticizing the malts. They give this perfect slightly sweet taste -- I told somebody it was like liquid candy. The hops and malts work together to form a DIPA that stands tall.

Feel is great, too. Super smooth and creamy. Full bodied. From start to finish this beer is amazing. Really wish this was bottled. Would like to give more people that opportunity to try this. Really don't understand why anybody wouldn't rate this beer with high marks. Quite possible they've tweaked the recipe since the last release, or some people didn't have this beer as fresh as I did. Either way, it's great now, and if you can find it, then you must drink it.

On tap. Pours an orange-hued copper, with a thin head of bright-white foam. This retains well, leaving back some frothy lacing that sticks to the sides of the glass. The aroma smells floral and piney, with a touch of medicinal character. Grapefruit is standing out, along with some sweeter notes of fruit and malt. The alcohol gives this a certain amount of heaviness in the nose. The taste has a zesty bitterness with resins mixed in. Softer notes of herbs, tropical fruit, bread and a touch of sweeter caramel malts help balance this. This ends dry, bitter and resinous on the finish. The feel is medium with a sharp creaminess that spreads out. The higher alcohol gives this a boozy edge. This was certainly drinkable “enough” for a bigger DIPA but the pronounced alcohol presence does hold this down with unnecessary booze and sweetness that I’m afraid wrecks the party a bit.

Had it at the brewery. It had a orange copper color with 2 finger head.

Smell: Grapefruit and Citrus all the way. Big hop bomb

Taste: More grapefruit and more hops. Just enough malt but the hops steal the show.

Superb beer and one of the best IPA's that I have had. It is almost like bear republic racer 5 but with more hop character since it is a DIPA.

Had this one on tap at the brewery. Served in a tulip glass this beer has a nice amber to orange color. Head was medium and stayed for a little bit.
Smell was of citrus fruit as well as a little malt. Some minor grassy notes as well.
Taste is pretty citrus heavy from beginning to end. Some pine near the end. Grapefruit is what I would say dominates with small malt background
Mouth feel is pretty standard. Not too carbonated and not too heavy on the tongue.
Overall either the best port city beer I have tried or very near the top. Very good overall.
