Pours a hazy goldish orange. Some orange gummy candy aroma on the nose. Lots of orange tangerine character with some gummy sweetness. in some ways, this reminds me of a bigger bolder Partly Cloudy. That's Solace's flagship which also features El Dorado and Citra. In truth, I would probably prefer a glass of the Sterling brewery's IPA over this. The bigness of it is a bit maniacal and does stick it to you quite a little bit. This is a good DIPA though it's pushing it at 8.9%.

Pours the color of shiny brass on a ship with a smaller head and limited lace. Nose is old school pine and citrus but not as big as I was hoping/expecting. Taste is certainly old school with firm bitterness, pine, and some cracker malt backbone. Its a pretty good beer if you are looking for a classic IPA, although I'd like a bigger nose on this one considering it is a pretty big beer.

Appearance: Pours clear and golden with a two finger head; good persistence and spotty lacing
Smell: Bright and citrusy with tropical fruit tones of mango and pineapple
Taste: Mango and pineapple forward, with a bit of sugar cookie underneath; through the middle, a citrusy bitterness develops, bringing lemon and orange tones; moderate to high bitterness, through the finish, all well complemented by the tropical fruit and the malt base
Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate to high carbonation
Overall: In a sea of NE IPAs, here is a beer that captures some of the tropical fruit aspects that make that style so popular while also bringing the citrusy bitterness of the West Coast - a first class effort by Port City

Baby, I am really getting it on tonight! I attended a high school classmate's funeral yesterday, two months before our 35-year reunion; a fellow site user called me out for my laser-focus on CANs to the point that it seemed like I was overlooking bottles; I am interested in eradicating my Bottle Backlog for once & for all (смерть бутылочкам!); it is not yet NBS; I had a really nice, sustaining nap earlier & best of all, the Pirates won & the Grateful Dead is in concert on telly so my brain is in "Park" anyway.
From the Bottle: "Dep golden with subtle orange hues, Maniacal (R) perfectly balances firm hop bitterness, pine and citrus aromatics, and malt structure."; "85 IBU".
I have to cop to some anxiousness in Pop!ping the cap simply because I could not wait to get started. The local ballpark was setting off fireworks, so the smell of gunpowder was in the air & I was ready! Despite all of my inherent excitement, I went with a slow, gentle C-line pour, resulting in the creation of two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with excellent retention, leaving loads of lacing in its wake. Color was an oh-so-slightly-hazy Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7). Nose was like citrus fruit salad with grapefruit, orange, lemon and a little pineapple on a biscuit base. It was like when we made fruit salad & Bisquick in a coal-fired Dutch Oven at camp in the Boy Scouts. I wasn't much for campling or the outdoor life, which is why I joined the Navy, but those desserts … Mmmm! Mouthfeel was big, thick, full & creamy, like a dollop scooped onto my tongue. I let it roll around, savoring the citrusy bitterness, which was surprisingly more lemony than grapefruit with orange and pineapple to smooth the rough patches. The malt was also surprising more biscuity than caramel, which is the usual suspect, rendering it biscotti-like. If there is one thing that I miss by virtue of no longer living in Da 'Burgh, it is Enrico's Biscotti Co., dahn inna Strip Disrick. Man, I used to make a weekly trip to load up for my morning coffee before heading off to class. Back to the beer - it was listed as 8,5% ABV & it was a pleasant follow-up to that Maniacal Stone nonsense earlier. This was mellow where that was hot. This was the way I like my DIPAs - drinkable, but not so crazy as to lay me out. It had a really nice citrusiness, especially of lemon, and a malt base that knew how to behave itself. Finish was semi-dry to dry, but not hot nor overwhelming. It was a nice wind up to the day as I get ready to retire for the evening. Tomorrow brings an all-new adventure in the form of NBS. See yinz then!
