375ml C&C bottle (Batch 001) poured into an Idle Hands tulip.

A - Pours a pale, straw golden color, moderately hazed with a finger of frothy white foam that falls slowly and leaves foamy sheets of lacing on the glass.

S - Somewhat white wine-like in aroma on first sniff. Rather grapey, definitely fruity overall, a touch spicy, extremely mild funk going on, and even though it is just blueberry plant derived yeast, I think I am getting a little bit of blueberry in here too. Rather yeasty, faintly tart, even getting traces of alcohol.

T - Hmmm, rather bland in taste. Dry, biscuit and yeasty, bready malt base. A bit peppery/spicy with a medium-ish hop bitterness. Fruitiness is reduced compared to the aroma, still getting suggestions of blueberry - probably subliminal in nature.

M - Lower level carbonation for the style, lightish-medium body. Spicy, yeasty, estery in taste, smell, feel - very farmhouse-y overall. Tends towards wine-like too.

O - Interesting...but not very exciting. Fairly ordinary tasting saison/farmhouse ale. I insist that I am getting hints of blueberry throughout - can blueberry plant derived yeast really do that? Nothing really sets this apart from others in the style. I would drink this regularly without any issue, but I know how good the style can be, so I'd probably regularly be left wanting something more...

375ml cork and cage bottle poured into a tulip glass.

A: Hazy golden color. Creamy white head settles quickly. Wispy blotches of lacing.

S: Bready and crackery malt with some whiffs of wheat. Mild tart/acidic scent. Yeasty, cellar must. Vague berries and fruit skins start to dominate. Almost a cranberry sort of impression.

T: Crusty bread and coarse wheaty flavors. Very mild tartness. Yeasty, "cellar" taste. Vague fruit and fruit skin. Spike of alcohol hides in a controlled phenolic edge. Mild balancing hop bitterness. Musty, rustic yeast finish.

M: Medium bodied. Full and firm feel. Carbonation prickles and scrubs assertively.

O: A medal winner at the GABF. Nothing mind-blowing really, just a good saison with a nice rustic charm.

Served from 375ml C&C bottle into a Crooked Stave tulip. Cellar temp.

Appearance- Hazier gold with quick bubbly white head that left no real traces.

Smell- Very bready/yeasty, mild sugary sweet blueberries, light crisp hops, malts.

Taste- Bready yeast, no real "wild yeast" presence or blueberry presence, light crisp hops, light alcohol, sweet, hoppy finish.

Mouthfeel-Highly carbonated, light burn, light bodied, clean finish.

Overall- Dissapointed with this beer. No "wild" characteristics, no blueberries. Nothing it claims to be.

12.68voz dark brown bottle, corked & caged, served in a fluted goblet.
Batch #001, 7.3% ABV (Vinland One weighed in at 6.5% ABV)
"Farmhouse Ale brewed with Native Yeasts Cultured from Maine Lowbush Blueberries"

This lovely Saison pours a slightly hazy golden color with just a touch of amber hue in the highlights. The spritzy and foamy 2” off-white head fades ever so slowly. Loads of clinging webbed lacing follow the liquid in rings, recording the volume and frequency of each satisfying gulp.

The aromas are quite Saison-like, but depart into places never before explored. A musty and slightly earthy smell rises at first pour, followed by the typical yeasty, citrusy, hoppy, malty, spice and woody aromas associated with the style. Underlying smells of dried grass, leather, smashed berries, juniper, distant smoke and a slight whiff of gin make for a uniquely interesting aroma profile.
The flavors also represent the style quite nicely, but as in the aroma, the flavors take on a few appealing twists and turns. The toasted malt and hop profiles are very balanced and in tune with the yeasty and musty tastes of a typical Farmhouse Ale. Fairly aggressive tastes of tart plums, macerated berries, tobacco, gin and orange zest mingle and meet during the first few gulps, then blend nicely into one satisfying, gulpable, velvety liquid.
All aromas and flavors of beers, no matter the style, will naturally transform and balance themselves once they’re released from their enclosures and begin to warm, but Vinland Two (and One) goes many steps further to create new and interesting paths down the olfactory and taste bud freeway.
This review actually required 2 Vinland Twos to complete. I drank the first to shake off a difficult, dreary and drizzly day. The second one (for a photo op and review) was all the more gratifying and enjoyable.
