look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.75

Appearance: 1/4 inch head, high carbonation, gold in color, hazy

Smell: dry white wine, light blueberry, light Belgian saison spices

Taste: blueberry--light wheat, hay, Belgian saison spices

Mouthfeel: sweet and funky, dry, light body, high carbonation

Overall: Amazing blueberry centric beer. The base saison is very tasty--little acidity and very light. The blueberries are present but never over done or cloying. This is an all day or fancy dessert beer. Getting more of this.

Heard about the GABF triumph, had to try this one out. Really happy to see breweries finding their own strains in the USA. Yet another way to push brewing variety further and further. Batch #1.

A- Poured into a large chalice from the 750ml bottle. Semi-hazy golden body with some orange in the middle. Creamy white head forms to a finger but falls to a frothy ring relatively quickly. The ring persists and leave some nice patches of lace.

S- Really ripe fruits jump out of the glass upon pouring, kind of a general berry feel. Upon further inspection caramel, fresh cracked grains, pepper and some classic Saison yeast comes to mind.

T- Quite fruity here too with that nice berry flavor coming through but the spiciness of the yeast catches up and brings upon a nice balance. Like a nice jam without sweetness. Somewhere between the well known Saison and Belgian Strong Goldens people know today. Peppercorns, honey, raw cracked grains, white grape juice, apples, pears, bread, raisin and lemon zest comes to mind.

MF- High carbonation supports the flavor nicely and works nicely with the creamy, silky consistency of the beer. Body is light and nicely dry with some spiciness on the palate in the finish.

I'm sure my interest in new yeast strains plays a role but this beer just feels fresh. The berry jam-like flavors are nice and work well with the other products the yeast produces. Somewhere between a Saison and Belgian Golden for me, but solid even without the classification we strive to create.

Interestingly this won gold at GABF, so we'll see how it is.

Careful pour holds back the yeast and yields a fairly clear slight hazy golden straw blond color with many bubbles streaming up to reinforce the decent 1/2 finger creamy but foamy head that retains well.

Nose is pretty interesting, nice phenols right off, a little vinous like must as well, a little phenolic booze of like a grappa almost, under that is a mild grainy wheat like saison, bit of biscuity toasty, lemongrass, grassy hay, little lemony citrus, and just a hint of candy.

Taste starts with more of the fruit, a mild lemony citrus and more of that vinous like flavor, a mild fruity ester component, etc. Then into a mild sweetness, little candy and candi sugar, mild cereal sugar, with malts of cereal grains, little toasty wheat and grassy hay, lemongrass, mild creaminess through it all. The booze comes on too, feels like a lot more than 7.3%, drinks more like 9% as a big phenolic booze flavor kicks in with some warmth and tingle, and a decent acidic kick. Phenolic flavors come through with the booze and yeast components, with the mild vinous notes. The yeast shows flashes of a cracker and bready kick and even a little yeasty, but that disappears quickly. Finish is sticky and a little sweet, mild syrupy, more lemon and citrus, more vinous notes and plenty of phenolic booze with acidic tingle.

Mouth is med bod, nice effervescent carb, a big acidic and booze bite with warmth and tingle.

Overall really interesting, I like the big phenolic note, the vinous character is a nice surprise too, lemon, citrus, all the malt components, all nice. Sweet characters do well although I'm not usually a big fan of them in a beer like this, the big issue was the huge bite it took, with all the booze warmth tingle, and the acidic bite, all that seemed to detract from the beer a bit.

Thanks to pjl44 for this extra from a recent trade!

batch 001

375ml c&c bottle. loud pop as the cap comes out of the bottle.

poured into tulip glass.

Appearance: orangish golden bodied beer with 1 finger of white head. Drops quickly to a thin cap.

Smell: bready and wheat malts. Slightly spicy yeast. Generic berry presence. Fruity like green apples, white grape, and pears. Overall it smells sweet.

Taste: Yeast forward. Wheat malts and a cereal note. Wild honey. Slightly peppery and gets fairly purfumey on the back end of this beer. Maybe a hint of blueberry that contributes some sweetness, but it also tastes a little artificial. Finishes sweet and yeasty.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with low almost moderate carbonation. Drinks at its listed abv; could use a little bit more zip in the form of more carbonation in this beer.

Overall: This is first Mystic beer, glad that I got the oppurtunity. It was good, but nothing great. Was hoping for a greater blueberry presence in this beer, but the beer is also a few months old by now. So there is potential that more blueberry presence existed in this beer when it was fresh. Its a middle of the road saison.
