Saison Renaud exemplifies a modern take on the traditional farmhouse ale. Made with just pilsner malt and Saaz hops, this recipe is made to truly let the assertiveness of our house yeast shine. Presenting a clean and crisp body, the spicy and fruity esters of the yeast prevail over a slight earthy bitterness from the Saaz.

750ml corked and caged bottle served in my ST tulip. Batch 001 indicated on the label. Pours a bright, golden-orange with a slightly hazy clarity. Head is 2.5 inches, bright white and rocky. Head eventually settles into a frothy skim, with thick textured sheets of lacing revealed as the head recedes. Nose suggests coriander, a hint of citrus zest and a light grassiness. Taste follows nose with the addition of a light malt presence and a slight buttery character, as well as a trace of noble hops bitterness at the finish. Mouthfeel is light in body with a pleasant, even carbonation and a slight acidity. So far, this is my favorite Saison from Mystic. It is a bit clean for the style, but it is really quite flavorful and drinkable. Definitely one of the best domestic Saisons I've tried to date. Well worth a try if the opportunity presents.

375ml brown bottle, caged and corked with a batch #.

Towering head, clear straw color. Aromas of lemongrass, chalky yeast, mineral, dried grass, lime pith, faintly medicinal and dragon fruit. Lighter bodied, tight crisp snap. Grainy, phenolic, bandaid, cotton candy, herbal, nutty, faintly warming, green tea, peppercorn, crackers, estery, vaguely astringent, yeast, dried green plantians ... you get it now, this is a complex ale. Dry grainy yeasty finish.

Saison full throttle, this is a serious beer that wants to have fun with your tastebuds.

Appearance: 1/2 inch head, cloudy, bright yellow in color, high carbonation

Smell: lemon, funk, and hay

Taste: follows the nose with light Belgian spices, lemon, funk, and hay

Mouthfeel: sweet and funky, light bodied with high carbonation

Overall: A solid easy drinking saison that for me just misses the good mark. Accurate according to style and clean but just no wow factor. That said, I would certainly not pass this up if offered to me.

Bought this newly-released Farmhouse-style ale by Mystic at Craft Beer Cellar in Belmont, MA. I had high hopes for this beer since Kate at the store recommended it as a good Saison for warm weather drinking. It didn't disappoint. Split the 750 mL bottle (which looks very classy and notes the beer was brewed with Saaz hops and Pilsner malt) with my girlfriend. Served in a pint glass.

Appearance (4.5/5): Saison Renaud pours a beautiful translucent orange-yellow color with a creamy, white, two finger head. In terms of color, it definitely compares favorably with other saisons. This is a stellar looking beer–I just wish I had a tulip glass to drink it from; then it would look even better.

Smell (4/5): Smells grassy, a little spicy funk from the yeast, light herbal hop character comes through, some sweet and biscuity aromas show as well. Definitely a complex aroma, though it isn't a home run. Nicely done. Could pass as a Belgian in a blind tasting.

Taste (4.5/5): Citric and grassy/herbal hops in the foretaste (this is a saison that leans to the hoppy side), then resolves with a muted sweetness. However, the defining characteristic of this beer is its earthy yeastiness. It adds a nice, mild spice to the flavor profile that really reminds one of a finely crafted Belgian saison. The yeast's flavor carries through from start to finish, and that's not a bad thing–it's great.

Mouthfeel (4/5): Saison Renaud has a smooth medium body and medium-low carbonation. These characteristics make for an easy and pleasant drink. The finish is not very long, with only a moderate aftertaste of herbal hops and biscuity malts. It also isn't as dry as some saisons tend to be.

Overall (4.5/5): Mystic has a very good beer on its hands here that is perfect summer weather drinking. I think its mixture of earthy yeastiness and hoppiness is spot on. The only criticism I can think of is that the carbonation could be a little higher. (But they're only a hair off, so it's not a big deal.) This is a classy beer made by people who obviously know how to brew farmhouse style ales–not an easy style, one with lots of nuance! Great job, Mystic. I will be buying more of your beer.

Mystic Brewery "Saison Renaud ale"
750 ml brown glass bottle, corked and caged; "Batch Number: 015"
$15.50 @ Stinky Brklyn, 215 Smith Street, Brooklyn, NY

Mystic's Saison Renaud pours a cloudy yellow-orange body that teems with very-fine streams of bubbles steadily rising towards its creamy white cap. Perhaps because of those bubbles, the head holds remarkably well.

In the aroma chalky yeast and citrus pith combine over a soft fruitiness that suggests apricot and peach.

The fruitiness carries over into the flavor. It's broad, somewhat tart, and displays apple, apricot, tangerine, peach, plum, pear, green banana, papaya, and suggestions of red berries and black cherry. Malt is present as well, offering a sweetish bed of straw and a dollop of honey for the fruits to play on, both counterbalanced by a touch of black pepper and delicate spiciness. As it warms it opens up, softening the tartish note as well as the chalky-pithy note, and adding a bit of floral character into the mix. It's moderately bitter but still finishes fairly dry with some residual mineralish yeasty character and dull spice adding a spot of assistance. Let it linger long enough and it becomes grassy, leafy, and subtly earthy.

It's really a remarkable ale in that it delivers such a balanced and rounded complexity with all of the components fitting so nicely together, while remaining very ethereal. There's a malt presence, but it's not malty; the yeast characteristics are clear, yet you still have to look; and it's sweetish but somehow dry at the very same time.

One of the most impressive beers I've had in a long time! This, my friends, is well worth seeking out!!!
