One thing about the average saison, even the ones that you really like: they can be similar to drinking loaves of bread. That's okay for colder weather, but in warmer weather I don't always want something so heavy. Enter Renaud-- very dry and light and lemony, which is not surprising given the pils approach. Excellent for summer; went well with a giant bowl of chicken noodle soup from Lady Siam and "Therese Raquin" (1953). And as we're coming to expect from Mystic, it comes in a weapons-grade, frilly-stenciled bottle.

I had this beer as part of a ten course meal at clios in Boston.

Pours a great old gold body and a fluffy white head

Smells floral with some spice

Perfect balance of yeast hop and malt.

Well carbonated

This beer was part of a great culinary experience. We had everything from wagi steak to sea urchin and flavors that were sour, sweet, salty and bitter. This beer paired well with all of those dishes. My food would not have tasted the same without this beer . One of the best food beers I've ever had

Pale gold colour, slight cloud. Head is white, foamy and dense and a bit over-generous. Lace is OK, and yeah looks quite good but head could be toned down.

Smells pleasant. Largely phenolic but a good citric tang to it. Touch of banana and spice, bit peppery and earthy. Nice grounding but a nice refreshing balance.

Taste is far more medicinal, and strong. Has a boozey character without necessarily having a large heat to it. Touch of candied orange peel, mandarin and a touch of brandy. Medicinal and phenolic back that gets a slight peppermint spice to it. Nice enough but not an eminent complexity, but still tastes mildly potent.

Decent body, swills with a slightly dry finish. Maybe a lick of booze heat late.

Sipper rather than a quaffer. Could freshen up to be more drinkable and just more likeable.

375ml caged and corked bottle purchased somewhere in Massachusetts by my mum, shared with Sam in Sydney.

Pours a pleasingly hazed yellow colour with a massively frothy, coarse-bubbled and rocky head of white that crackles and aerates its way down to nothing. Carbonation is also fairly coarse, and a little bit sparse. Body is fairly light. Looks pretty good overall though.

Nose is also pleasant. Some stonefruit and banana characters with a hint of something sharper: perhaps some dry-hopping. Really very rounded with some deep sweetness to it. It's very nice.

Taste is a little bit stranger. Here there is a pronounced wheatiness, which stretches the palate a little, adding some acidity and a slight metallic character. Under this is the sweetness and the banana fruitiness from the nose, which creates quite a broad basis. Slight pepper on the finish almost turns slightly medicinal—along with the mild tartness it gives even a suggestion of cherries.

Feel is silky and fairly broad, despite feeling as though it's rather light.

Overall, I liked it a lot. It was full-flavoured with some complexity and interest. A bit more sharpness would really complete the package—some spice or pepper through the centre of the palate would be a great addition. But even as it is it's pretty tasty.

I had the opportunity to try this a number of years ago. I was on vacation in Boston and saw a bottle of this brewery at a liquor store I happened to pass by. A curiosity pick that paid off—the bottle was screenprinted at the time, so I’m guessing it was one of the very first batches, but the memory of the contents stayed with me.

Flash forward to the present and Mystic now distros in my area. I’m happy to report that this, their saison, remains as tasty as I remember it.

It pours a straw/golden color with great foam that dies down eventually. There’s a peppery aroma with a light estery note to it. I get some dry grassy characteristics contrasting with the floral parts, and a great peppery flavor on it. It’s on the dry side as it finishes. Overall well-crafted and reasonably priced too.

Batch # 11

Pours hazy gold with a good inch of solid wet white head that lasts forever and leaves an intermittent lace as you sip. Smell is bready and yeasty with a bit of spice, from the Saaz I assume. Taste is very yeast heavy gets a little sweet, but there's enough bitterness to balance it out. Mouthfeel is dry, but still has a decent body. Overall, very enjoyable. Not sure if this is my first experience with the Renaud yeast, but I like the flavor it imparts.

***Batch #11***

Poured from a 375ml bottle.

Quite a white head atop a light gold body but doesn`t really stick around and doesn`t have the legs like a saison should. Smell has fruit syrup and characteristics of yeast. Flavor is very crisp, peaches up front but ends abruptly with a dry end and no lingering flavors. Average saison i found.

Bottle I brought to share at AndrewK's tasting.

Batch number 007.

Pours a hazy yellow with a foamy white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, spice, and yeast aromas. Taste is much the same with grain, spice, and yeast flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of yeast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a solid yeast presence that takes prominence all around.

A - Pours a very pale yellow with a very slight haziness. It has a huge 4 finger fluffy white head that hangs around for a long time. Excellent lacing.

S - Very, very, very yeasty and funky. Raisins are present with a very slight spiciness as well

T - Very nice spice to it. Corriander? A funky flavor. Quite yeasty and lemony. Good but different for sure

M - a lighter bodied beer especially for 6.5 Abv. Smooth with a creaminess to it

O - Great Saison. One of my new favorites. A very drinkable beer with an intersting flavor. Sasions are starting to grow on me!
