From the corked, caged bottle marked Batch 001. Sampled on August 12, 2013 about 8-9 months after it was released.
It pours incredibly dark to nearly black. Ruby red hues can be seen around the very edges of the bottom of the glass. Moderate, lingering cream colored head. Very opaque.
Sweetness erupts on first whiff with esters of Belgian yeast, Belgian sugar, and Belgian dark malts along with a dark fruit quality such as fig and plum. At the same time subtle.
The body is full and creamy.
The taste begins with a warming sweetness of caramel fudge and malts and dark fruits but after a moment the spicy, peppery finish takes over and lingers at the end. Sweet to sharp. I like that a lot. I guess I have to disagree with previous reviewers who rated it good to very good because I thought this was a a very fine beer.

Appearance: minimal head, chestnut brown in color, clear, medium carbonation
Smell: brown sugar, raisin, fig, alcohol, and dates
Taste: brown sugar, raisin, fig, alcohol, Belgian spices, pumpernickel bread, and dates
Mouthfeel: medium carbonation, heavy body, sweet start with light bitterness, chewy
Overall: One of the better quads I have had from Massachusetts. This one is nice, rich, and full of dark fruit. I am going to get this again.

Day of Doom opens to a sweet, syrupy aroma heavy with fruit esters, including fig, blood orange, cherry, berry, and even touches of concord grape. The esters are bolstered by a good smattering of brown sugar, vanilla, and maple syrup, and a dose of sticky pink grapefruit from the hops adds further complexity. Hints of molasses play at the edges, adding a nice countering dark sugary note. These sugars rest on a bed of toast, biscuit, and baguette. Left open for a while, the pink grapefruits become more prominent, as do the figs and cherries. Overall, the nose is very nice, being well rounded for a quad and, while leaning heavily towards the sugars, showcasing a nice variety of sweet aromas--the only real drawback is a relatively light aroma that tends to fade more quickly than would be expected.
On the tongue, the beer opens with a burst of fruits, including cherry, berry, strawberry, blood orange, pomegranate, melon, soda-like lemon/lime, and light pineapple on the sweet side, and hints of fig and concord grape on the more earthy side, providing a nice balance. Bananas and cloves play around in the background, adding spice, and mingling with bits of pine resin and grapefruit rind from the hops. The malts also bring a baguette, biscuit, and herbed bread note. The flavors are, on the whole, potent, but simultaneously come across as strangely watery, except for the intensely sweet cherry & etc. notes, this sensation not helped by the watery and relatively low-carbonation mouthfeel, all of this making the beer seem a lot like a sugary fruit spritzer into which a dose of cognac had been poured. The alcohol is present, but not biting, only really coming out in the aftertaste, which otherwise bears peppery spices and lingering sweet sugars.
Overall, there are some nice flavors in here, but they tend to be heaviest toward the extra-sweet fruity side, and need a bit of balance to prevent the beer from becoming cloying. Having said that, this would be an excellent dessert beer, the sugary notes comparable to that of an ice wine.

Poured from 375 ml bottle into tulip glass.
A: Pours a dark ruby red almost brown with a frothy 1-2 finger white head that dissipated fairly quickly. Some minimal lacing.
S: Lots of fruit esters - plum, raisin, cherry, dates. Some Belgian yeast and molasses.
T: Tons of dark fruit flavors bursting out. A mix of cherry, plum, raisin, dates. There is a subtle sweetness and a bit of spice. Maybe corriander?
M: Fairly full bodied and a bit of a syrup quality but not sticky sweet.
O: A very nice quad, and surprising drinkable considering 12% ABV. This is probably my favorite of the Mystic brews.

Poured from the bottle into my Chimay glass. Batch 001.
Appeared a dark brown color with a reddish tinge. Produced a 4 finger light brown head that dissipated leaving only a thin layer on top. TONS of sediment chunks, even though I was pretty careful pouring it.
Smelled quite interesting. Definite port-wine characteristics mixed with dark fruits and a bit of creme.
Taste was quite potent. Hit with some grapey flavors, kind of like fermented Welch's grape juice. Cherries, plums, and tobacco flavors layered throughout. Interesting taste, a bit too sweet for my palate.
Mouthfeel was pretty thick but the carbonation was appropriate, even aged for a few years.
Overall it was just OK in my book. Many other options out there for a better price but I was happy to have tried it. Points gained though for a sweet bottle and name, and a great local brewery.

Pours a brownish color with a freakin' huge head in my chalice, fades at a very slow rate and makes me wait a long while to even get a sip, last of the pour leaves huge chunkies.
Smell has a decent amount of Belgian candied sugar on the nose with dark fruit and a touch of banana.
Taste is pretty large and in charge when it comes to the candied sugar and dark fruit, raisin-y throughout, it is very boozy, the heat doesn't burn the mouth so much as it does the throat, carbonation is very high which is expected, decent thickness and creaminess.

The odd little bottle, about ten months old, poured into a tulip.
This is a beautiful looking beer. Deep reddish/brown color with a finger or so of dense foam blanket. The head lingers nicely and offsets the deep, rich color nicely. Strong red hues. Attractive, a little "murky".
The smell was sweet and fruity, lots of fruity esters. Sugary-sweet and I assume that is the Belgian candi sugar, raisin/date/fig aromas. And the alcohol is not shy even at the age of the bottle. An earthy note as well - like very ripe fruit.
I thought the flavor was BIG, but it was not overwhelming or muddled. Heavy on the date/fig flavors and the earthiness in the smell delivers in the taste. Almost wine-like character. The malt just peeks through a little - enough to support and balance out the stronger flavors going on. It is sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. The alcohol is certainly present,
The mouthfeel is heavy - no doubt. It's thick and lingers on the tongue, but isn't "cloying". The alcohol provides a nice tingle and offsets the heavy feel somewhat, but there's no mistake that this is a heavy brew.
Overall, thought this a very good beer. Can stand alone for leisurely sipping or pair with robust food. Not something you can drink lots of - one bottle (by itself) seems about right. I can see having this for a rustic meal - venison, root vegetables, etc. And I can easily see getting carried away with it in that setting.
