I love ESB's! I also love what Mystic is doing with beer. This is a great brew from them, and true to the style. Bitter and sweet malt true to the British style. Easy drinking with great flavor and linger. Not something I've seen a lot of around but recommend it and will look for it again!

Bottle poured into a Sam Adams glass

Brown opaque breeed tea appearance. A one finger cap quickly settles into a pencil thick layer. Nice lacings on the glass.

Sweet malts , caramel, toffe with whisper of floral hops.

Burst of bitterness from the first sip, coffee and chocolate notes. Medium mouthfeel.

Recommended by my beer store guy, it is bitter. Extra special bitter. True to form but not my cup of tea. If you like ESB's , give it a try.

Pour: Very hazy, near opaque russet brown with about an inch of lingering fluffy beige head that leaves a ton of lacing.

Aroma: Sweet malts with hints of molasses, chocolate, coffee and cream. A touch of bitter on the nose, hinting at a light hop character.

Taste: Mostly coffee up front, with chocolate and molasses coming through on the swallow. A nice balance between the malt flavors, and a touch of bitter to keep the beer from being cloying. There’s also a bit of smokiness in here that makes itself more apparent in the aftertaste.

A very nice ESB. I'd love to have this regularly.

nice brown caramel colors with red hues and an off white bountiful head that makes me thirsty.
taste is wonderfully balanced with caramel and raisons and a touch of apples. Some graininess and a good amount of earthy and floral hop flavor that doesnt linger but comes up slightly to let you know its there. the yeast flavor is somewhat fruity but again tempers itself against the hops.
mouthfeel is medium and feels really fluffy kinda like the head.
overall a great beer and absolutely love the 16oz bottle for 3.99

The beer pours a rich, caramel mahogany color, nearly red, with a beautiful creamy yellow head of small bubbles that sit about a finger’s width above the beer and leave a splaying of medium-width, sheet like strands of lacing along the glass. In body, the beer is dark and mysterious, but in the light it shows a cloudy body with just hints of the other side of the glass. On the nose, the beer smells of herbal bread with a nice spice kick at the end of the smell. Minty English hops mingle with slight grassiness to give the beer a pleasantly herbal nose while the malt and yeast provide a doughy backdrop. On the tongue, the beer tastes nicely bready sweet with a good bitter shiver from the hops, and a touch of acid pop in the sides of the cheeks. In flavor, the beer begins as warm caramelly bread, washing doughy yeast over the tongue as minty hops swing into the flavor bringing touches of astringent grass and very slight medicinal bitters. There is a slight, and pleasant woodiness as well in the flavor. The finish returns to rich caramel bread with a final hiccup of herbal, bitter hops. The after taste is light with bitter grass. In the mouth, the beer feels medium in body with a light chewiness and a soft and velvety carbonation with just a slight bite. The mouth is left with a sticky scrim of saliva and a slight pucker, though no real tartness is perceived in the flavor of the beer. Overall this is a hell of a good ESB, and would make an excellent beer to knock back over the course of a day. Rich and flavorful in both malt and hops, it gives a great interpretation of British beer character and will certainly have you returning for more. It would go great with pub food. Try this beer.

Bottled: earlier

Pours a clouded brown with caramel hues, some etching atop. Smells of tea, grain, some toffee, a bit of biscuit and some earthy hops. Flavor is bitter, some earth, some tea, some cabbage...?..?.. Huh, something a little disappointing here; a little oxidized with cardboard. Medium bodied with lively and sharp snaps of carb and a semi dry finish. Meh, once is enough for me.

Bottle from Downtown Wine and Spirits.
Pours a hazy light brown with a smallish off white head that dissipates quickly to a cap but lingers forever. Aromas of rich dark and caramelized sugars with a bready yeasty and fruity edge. The flavor is more sweet sugary darker malts with a bit of a minerally almost salty flavor coming through. Bready with hints of rum and raisins and a bit of an earthy herbal hop flavor and bite. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet but sharp mouthfeel. Decent beer, but not something I could drink very much of. I expect a bit of mineral bite in an English ale, but here its a bit strong and harsh.

Poured from a pint bottle into a nonic tumbler- pours a hazy, dark mahogany color with very little head, barely any retention. White bubbles.

Smell is faint- nice bready malts though. A little sweet.

Taste is wonderful- lots of bready, sweet malt flavors, some of the most delicious malts that I think I've ever had. A slight bitterness, finishes slightly dry but mostly sweet.

Mouthfeel is very nice- medium body, low carbonation. This is an excellent beer. There's not much else to say about its character. It's very drinkable, and would be a nice accompaniment to most any hearty meal. I'm drinking it by itself and its great by itself.

Pours a decent fizzy head that reaches 1 finger but starts to fade fairly quickly, no real lacing either, a mostly hazy honey brown colored beer.

NOse brings some caramel syrupy molasses like malts, little toasty reddish malt and a bit of biscuit, and very light nutty toffee aroma, then hops bring more earthy herbal hops, little grassy herbal aroma that gives that faint rubbery like hop aroma.

Taste brings more of the same, starting with a candy syrupy malt, caramel, a bit of a molasses like raw fermented cane sugar almost, more biscuit and some toffee, slight nutty, and more toasty candy reddish malts. then hops, fair bitterness but not a lot, some earthy herbal hops, again the typical U.K. style herbal earthy hops, a bit of a chewy hop. it does have an interesting juicy malt character as it goes, with a bit of the candy caramel toffee flavors coming through more. Finish is a bit sticky sweet, mildly syrupy, some bitterness with an earthy bittering hop, more nutty toffee and caramel lingering, more toasty juicy reddish malt too.

Mouth is med bod, slight syrupy, lower carb.

Overall not bad, not quite my typical style, and for an ESB this doesn't seem to strike much either, but not too bad overall, drinkable, decent balance, not too rubbery and herbal vegetal on the hops, could have been a bit more bitter overall too since it IS an ESB afterall. Also carb was too low.

Appearance: dark reddish-brown in color, 1/3 inch head, cloudy, high carbonation

Smell: toasted malt, caramel, slight bit of apple cider

Taste: meadow, toasted malt, toffee, hops, and caramel

Mouthfeel: medium bodied, moderate carbonation, sweet start with a big bitter middle and a less bitter end

Overall: Not a bad ESB, but nothing that blew me away either. Tasted very much like a nice English malted beer. I might get this again, but there are better options in the style.
