The BA profile states that this place has only 6 taps, but it actually has 20...they serve 5 of their own brews.
Typical Irish Pub looking place, long and alot of wood. They had some really nice music going, and a very youthful bar crowd that was playful and stayed until bar close. They had a pretty decent tap selection, but nothing that out of the ordinary, except for their own beers. They had an Autumn Saison on, so I tried one of those. It was super tasty. I didn't eat any of the food, but I did enjoy my time there and their beers that I tried were pretty good. Not terrible, but nothing I wouldn't have again.

This stop on our tour of Duluth Breweries, was by far the highlight of the event. We stopped in, ready to eat, I recall the food was great, but the beers and service really stood out.
We had a flight of seven, it was a makeshift flight from sample cups, but the enthusiasm of the bartender made it delightful. Normally we take our flight and the misses will line them up in the order that she likes (she's a bit more picky than I), then I'm to finish off her least favorites. That night was by far the hardest we've ever had to work to organize our flight. Each beer was flavorful and hit all of the right points for what we wanted from those styles. We even ended up with a growler!
The beer was great, but the service was even better! The bartender seemed so excited about the fact that we both are not originally from the Midwest. Even to the point that she insisted that she drag the master brewer up from whatever task he was engaged in, to greet us. Twenty minutes of chatting with him and getting plenty of helpful pointers, was a splendid cap on what had already been an amazing find. I'll definitely be going back.

From the accounts rendered here at BA by way of previous reviews, this place started out as a mediocre-to-terrible place which has gradually become halfway-decent, and my own account will have the effect of cementing that bon mot rather than diminishing it.
Many, many beverage choices, with a focus on specialty-imported and Craft beer. Twenty craft taps? Crimony; for a goofy little hole in the wall in drunken Twin Ports America, this place is the Tops!
But it ain't the Rathskeller or any of the other Brewhouse-branded and owned enterprises, but has a silly Irish theme that got old twenty years ago in the eyes of any beergeek over the age of 40 -- so be it! I'm hungry, and a meat-filled pasty with mash and gravy for $7 is a bangin' choice for the night, and I am too tired to go elbow-to-elbow at the Brewhouse.
One house-brewed stout on tap (I avoided it as from my experience these little brewoubs tend to allow untoward funkiness affect even their own brews and tapline treatment...) in addition to the Heineken-brewed Murphy's and also Guinness Draught (which I rarely drink) plus some of the newer commercial offerings from Irish brewers, and a load of domestic/regional/American Craft brands. Sure, why not? I went for their Scanlon IPA (not named after hard-rockin' Tommy out of WBL MGM?) and was pleased, enough that I'd rate similarly to the only review here on BA, but I was tired and not in the mood for reviewin' this evening.
The bartender on-shift served us at one of the front tables --the middle, nearest the front windows-- and it was only 6 PM on a Saturday night (11/18/12), so it was early enough for him to be on-point in an establishment that was not in the least bit overly-crowded or busy. He was efficient, orderly, and friendly. Seemed to be pretty experienced, too.
Nevertheless, Quesadillas being the daily appetizer special was weird, but this is stoner country and there are not many other Irish pubs with a reasonable price structure (and also no "waiting list") around here, so you take what you can get. GREAT service, and a better Floor Show*...
The floor show involved some dude in a VIAGRA-logoed NASCAR-style jacket... watching as he chatted-up some multi-racial college cuties of the damn-near underage variety warmed the cockles of my very, very bitter heart, indeed, and it almost made me remember being aged 23 (and possessed of long, flowing flaxen locks) once again! Plus, he reminded me a lot of my North Dakotan / College of Engineering Grad roommate (we'll call him "Dan", here, to protect the innocent) circa 1991, and so I dubbed him a worthy successor to that sleazeball. Seriously, that guy would hit "Mississippi Live" and make out like a bandit -- sorta. One night stands have never been my cup of tea, but that is a long time ago, so "play on, Playa."
Lively Twin Ports meat market action, tasty victuals and decent beer -- WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE?
Next time I go I will get out my BJCP style guidebook (the App on my iPhone, I mean...) and give the beers brewed here a thorough thrashing, but on my sole visit thus far I was not inclined to bag on them completely.
Great service, good food, good prices. Bing Bam Boom.

I was able to stop by again (June 2013) and really enjoyed the improved beers, great local music, friendly staff and patrons.

I enjoyed my visit to Carmody. It has a good layout with the bar, tables and some window side tables in front. At the midpoint of the space is a stage and more seating. The back ¼ offers a small lounge area and a large window in which you can just catch a glimpse of the big lake. There is an interesting seating area opposite the stage, the seats connected to the wall almost looks like a modified pew. There are high ceilings, dark wood and yellow paint with lots of photos and Irish stuff.
I enjoyed the really friendly service. They were quick on the service, could discuss beer and music and were generous in their praise of some of the other nearby beer establishments.
I tried three of the 6 house beers. Everything was solid with the session ale being the standout. They also have decent guest taps and bottles. They mentioned that their brewing is improving as they have almost two years now on their current set-up. Beers were $3.50 per pint.
I found out the owner was from Chicago and that explains the Old Style-Cubs neon and the Old Style bottles on the menu.
Since it is near Benedicts’, and Fitger’s, you have an easy mini pub-crawl in the making.

One of the good bars in Duluth. Not dominated by townies or college kids, there seems to be a good selection of good people who drink here. I’ve been here many times for trivia night and made great temporary friends with people at the bar to be on my team. It’s just one of those bars where you can feel at home.
The style is a traditional Irish Pub. Lots of wood work, Irish paraphernalia, dollar bills taped to the walls, and pictures of old-Duluth and even some good photos of the USS Minnesota. There is a small area for a band to play, though if it’s too loud the viewing area is an unpleasant place to be to listen. (and there is music most weekend nights) It’s also in the way towards the women’s bathroom, so you get some mid-set walk-throughs of ladies going to the can. Though it’s not meant for a big venue, people like Kathy McTavish and her amazing improvisational cello playing fit in perfectly to make Carmody’s a destination if you’re in the mood for good beer and amazing ambient trip-cello. In the back is a couch and stuffed chairs around a gas fire place, a delightful place to sit in mid-winter.
The beer selection is good. Surly Furious and Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale are almost always on tap, and Hop-Slam is there in-season. Carmody’s also brews their own beer, but to be frank, I must say I enjoy a Furious more than I do any of their offerings. They do present a Pale Ale and an IPA that are completely drinkable, and are heads above any Bud-Miller-Cooers. It would be nice if they would bear down and offer a nice thick stout… (please?)
Over all, it’s a great bar in Duluth. It’s location is a few blocks from Fitgers’ Brew Pub, and is a great way to take in the night air next to blustery Lake Superior on a short walk down to another pub to enjoy another home-made brew.

Decided to try this place out as it's just walking distance from Fitger's and our hotel. Pretty quiet with few patrons when we visited. Pretty cool looking bar with tables and booths scattered around. In the way back, it looked like they had some couches to sit on. Pretty warm feel to the bar area.
I tried four of the beers they had on tap and thought they were all very well crafted. The Cinnamon Nut Brown was my favorite. I liked the uniqueness of the beers and the fact that they were all 6% or lower in alcohol. Prices were very reasonable and they also had about 15 or so guest taps. I saw Surly, Odell, Dubrue and New Belgium on the list. They also had the standard imports like Guiness and the like.
Good service from the bartender, but it was pretty dead so she didn't have a whole lot to tend to.
Overall, we had a good experience and would go back again, especially to try some of the unique offerings they had on tap.

While driving back to the hotel from Fitger’s down the street on East Superior (main drag of Duluth), I saw “& Brewing” tacked on the bottom of Carmody Irish Pub. While done nicely, it seems like it has been added, but not specifics were available on the history of the brewing at the pub. And, since I was in a hurry, I, unfortunately, didn’t ask when there.
In short, I found the stop to be more pleasant and productive than I imagined at first. While I don’t doubt Buebie’s experience, I found it to be much better. It’s nearly two months later, so maybe the Carmody brewers are learning and have made some adjustments. Again, I have not inside information, and we’ll leave that to a Duluth BA to add.
I tried the follow beers as a sampler tray: Agnes Red Ale (6%), Tippler’s Golden (4.8%), Apollo Pale Ale (5.2%), American Red Ale (5.7%), Scanlon IPA (6.7%) and Roast Mint Stout (4.8%). In the Agnes I could taste a bit of Buebie’s point--a small off flavor in it (diaceytl?) and the Apollo, while could, didn’t have a completely clean taste as well. Both were quite drinkable. The Tippler’s was a solid beer with a bit of a spicy hop character to it. No descriptions on the website, so don’t know much more than that about it. My favorite was the Scanlon IPA, which is a very acceptable IPA and would’ve been my choice for a pint if I had had the time for one. While it wasn’t my favorite, the Roast Mint Stout was good and I applaud the effort to push the limits. All of the beers were quite drinkable, and, even though I had sample is whiskey glasses, there was a lace on every glass. Every beer was quite acceptable, and a couple were good. Nothing was mind blowing or matched my favorites at Fitger’s the night before, but good beer worth drinking a pint.
On the menu, Carmody’s own offerings were listed as “home brews,” which I liked for some reason. In addition, they have 14 gues taps that focused mostly on regional beers like Surly Furious, New Belgium 1554 and Ranger IPA, and two Dubrue beers, evidently a new local brewery in Duluth. Bartender was very friendly and attentive, and several locals were coming in just after 3 pm when we were there. Nice old bar, run down a bit and divvy, but comfortable. Stage in the back bar, and there seem to be a emphasis on local music as well from posters and dollar bills with bands, names and dedications attached to the bar wall.
While I find it difficult to get past Fitger’s when I’m in town for a quick stop, I would most definitely consider spending some time at Carmody for a pint. If I were into local music, this definitely a place to stop. Hopefully, with experience, the beer will continue to improve over time.

I was up in Duluth for the weekend and wanted to try out a few new places I hadn't been before.
We strolled from our hotel room at Fitgers over to a couple martini bars. They were not up our alley, glancing across the street I saw this place and it said brewpub, and b-lined it for the place.
The security at the door was friendly and very inviting. Coming inside the atmosphere was terrific, big open spaces with high ceilings, good beery decor and plenty of sitting room, as well as standing areas.
Many to to choose from, and after speaking with the very attentive waitress I come to find out that they brew on the premises. Immediately I was feeling great about this place. So I ordered a house brewed potato oatmeal stout.
This is where things go south...
THe beer was hideously awful. I couldn't even stomach a 2nd sip, but I had to to be sure that it wasn't just a bad first sip. Three sips later and I felt like vomiting. This was one of the worste repulsive beers I have ever had. Sweet, sour, salty, moldy tasting. I thought ,aybe the lines were just dirty on this one, or it was a bad beer.
So I ordered their hopped up red.
The same result, except a little worse. Rotten cheese, meets mold, meets rotten vegtables. I dont know how I didnt projectile vomit across the room.
Yet there were drunk people all over the place ranting and raving about how great the beer is. Did they serve us bad ones to play a joke on us?
Just to be sure I went for one more beer, this time their hopped up ipa.
THE SAME RESULT! The brew on premise beer here is f-ing horrid.
Myfriend ordered a mixed drink after this, she tasted all three and came up with the exact same conclusions. So it wasn't just me.
We got up to leave, leaving 3 almost full beers on the table, people were noticing. The security guard came over and said we cant leave good beer on the table, it was alcohol abuse. The waitress asked if there was a problem with our beers.
I replied that I didnt care for them. This did not go over well so we decided to skidadle.
With that said though, the service is great, the staff is, as you can see very attentive.
Just horrible horrible beer.
