a very well crafted ipa from bonfire, one of their best beers to date really. this is done with local and proprietary hops from what i understand, grown not to far from the brewery and done relatively fresh. the nose reflects that, a high altitude hop profile, medium alpha but a ton of citrus and pine. they describe this one the can as a caramel malt bomb, but i dont get an overdose of that, which i of course welcome in my american ipa, keep it light, let the hops shine, and they certainly do here. pumpkin orange liquid with a great glow, a little haze, and a lazy and tough to rouse white head that settles back to lace patches in a minute or so. citrus and pine hops on the nose, not a ton of malt but enough to make this a bigger beer, smells awesome really, clean and bright, satisfying, the flavor is real satisfying, complex enough to hold my attention, but not overshooting the target here, a straightforward american hop centered beer, fresh as they come. it only gets bitter on the back end, the rest of it is west coasty without the oils, chinook to thank for that. the feel is a mixed bag, i would love it to have and to hold a but more carbonation, but i love the full body, smooth feel, and prominent bitter hops that last forever with just a little malt sweetness on my tongue after each gulp. its a really good ipa, in the modus and odell ipa range, lovely stuff here, i hope this blows up.

12 fl oz aluminum can purchased at Argonaut Liquor and served cold into a pilsner glass at high altitude in Castle Rock, CO. Reviewed live as an IPA per the label.

7.0% ABV. Expectations are average; this is my first beer from this brewery.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: 6 fingers wide. Off-white head with khaki hues. Full and fairly creamy, with decent thickness. Decent complexion and consistency. Retention is very good - easily 6 minutes. Leaves light lacing on the sides of the glass as it reedes.

BODY: Clear translucent copper of above average vibrance. Clean, without any visible yeast particulate or hop sediment.

Appears well-carbonated. While not unique or special looking within its style, it's a generally good-looking ale.

AROMA: Only a generic floral and grassy hop character. Some mild pale malts and clean barley as well. The hops seem weak and the malts uninteresting. It's a dull aroma of average strength, and lacks any yeast character. Luckily, no overt alcohol or off notes are present.

This is shaping up to be quite a pedestrian IPA.

TASTE: Ugh - they went crazy with the caramalt, throwing off the balance substantially. There's some generic grassy and floral hop character. What a weak underwhelming build. It lacks any interesting hop notes - there's no pine, resin, citrus, dank herbal notes, etc - and it's malt-dominant. I'm not enjoying it. Pathetically simple, with no enjoyable flavours.

The flavours - bland as they are - are shockingly shallow. It's as empty of flavour as I can imagine an IPA could ever be.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, sticky, medium-bodied, and too thick for its lack of diverse or deep flavours. Overcarbonated. This texture matches the taste only in (lack of) quality. Very underwhelming.

OVERALL: The most generic soulless uninspired IPA I've had in a long, long time. Horribly pedestrian. Just bland and boring as hell. Why brew this? Sure, it's drinkable, but this is the kind of thing I'd expect from an intermediate level homebrewer. I'm a little suspicious now of the Bonfire Vanilla Porter and Blonde Ale awaiting me in the fridge.

12.19.14: Truncated impressions from a second can:

Pours a healthy long-lasting head. Pretty average/underwhelming appearance for an IPA.

Aromatics offer nothing of note - generic floral hop character is prevalent. Seems underhopped for the style, but the lack of sweetness suggests it isn't overmalted per se.

Taste is similarly uninspired, with a generic one-two punch of pale malts and floral hops. A soulless dull brew.

Texture is mediocre, with overcarbonation and a typical smoothness and wetness. Certainly doesn't elevate the beer, nor does it naturally accentuate the flavours in this build.

A pedestrian IPA that will be tried and forgotten. It takes a lot more to stand out in the overcrowded IPA market.
