Notes & Commercial Description:
Beer added by: BeerAdvocate on 03-01-2005

The Kölsch is our flagship brand and our lightest offering.

This beer was patterned off of the traditional German Kölsch that where produced in the city of Koln. Traditionally, this beer was brewed using a portion of the grain as wheat instead of barley.

This beer is perfect for those experimenting with craft beer for the first time.

The aroma is that of cereal grains with a light floral note at the end. Upon drinking, the flavors subtly take over the mouth leaving very little bitterness. There is a noticeably sweet taste that appears just before the carbonation cleans the palate.

Neutral aroma with a bit of cheesiness. Crowning head on golden yellow. Fizzy carbonation, and apple juice off-taste, with bitter and drying finish. Served to me almost warm. Altogether light and drinkable on a hot day, but nothing to write home about..

Not usually a fan of "light beers" but tried this. Poured a clear, slightly golden color. aroma of subtle hops and slightly medicinal. Taste is well, dull. Obviously for the masses. Cornish light body with a subtle hop flavor. I cant even discern anything distinct. Just, plain i suppose. Wouldnt order again.

On tap at the source...

Pours typical extra-light yellow - almost a chartreuse - for a Kolsch. Head a little thin - looks like a solid lawnmower entry.

Scent is style-neutral - faint hint of hops and grains but really there's not a whole lot here.

Something about the Kolsch style usually turns me off - maybe a little silage from the Saaz hops - but this one really didn't have much of that. Clean-drinking mildness and spriteliness expected from the style.

Palate feel is pretty much what you expect - clean, crisp...maybe slight bitterness on the finish but nothing blatant.

Good for a hot day - decent pint for style.

Had this beer on tap at the brewpub in Ottawa. Served in a pint glass, cool.

A-Light thin white head and a gold body

S-Sweet somewhat floral hop smell

T-Sweet grainy front and a really present noble hop middle

D-Nice. One of the better North American representations of this style.

A: Poured with an average-sized, white head that diminished to 1/2-finger. Body is light gold and completely clear.

S: Not much to the aroma... maybe some light citrus, but it's fairly weak.

T: Easy-drinking beer that is quite refreshing, with citrus notes balancing a bit of sweet malt. The finish has just a touch of bitterness to it.

M: Light-bodied with a slightly creamy texture, and average carbonation.

D: Nothing to blow you away, but a very refreshing beer to have in the summer... or in the winter, as I did... but it was definitely a decent beer to start the day with.

The nest beer I had an opportunity to try at The Clocktower. Golden pour with a small white head. Crisp aroma of light malts and a slight touch of citrus. Pleasing malty body is carried off with aplomb, and leans towards lighter malts, and reminds me of a maltier pils. Nice light bittering in the finish. The body is smooth, but also well carbonated. I was impressed by this beer and it slaked my thirst on a hot day.

Clear gold not much head on the pour. Very little aroma - a hint ogf something herbal maybe. Lightly bitter with a floral note, and a little bit of citrus. Light body with a sharp carbonation - a bit too much I think. Otherwise, drinkable and refreshing, but that's it really.
