Notes/Commercial Description:
Canebrake is crisp and smooth with a beautiful golden honey color. This refreshing American wheat style brew highlights sweet remnants of sugarcane with notes of honey, spice, and citrus on the finish. A new Louisiana tradition, Canebrake was the first commerical beer in the world brewed with local sugarcane syrup.

A: Pours a clear, rich golden amber with a thin white mousse that dissipates very quickly. Aside from the fact that head retention is sorely lacking, this is a very attractive ale.

S: Very neutral on the nose-it takes quite some time for subtle aromas of wheat toast, lemon, grass, and cane syrup to emerge.

T: Mild notes of cane sugar, minerals, biscuit, wheat toast, grass, herbs, and lemon flit across the palate. The finish is, at least for me, unique among ales of this type, presenting an initial grassy bitterness followed by a kiss of cane syrup sweetness.

M: Fairly light in body, but just a bit heavier than some other familiar wheat ales. A smooth, creamy texture develops in the mouth, though it dries out a little toward the finish. Carbonation is very crisp and a little prickly. At only 4.9% abv, this is incredibly easy to drink.

O: Though I wasn't expecting much going into this one, I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised. Canebrake is not earth-shattering, even among American pale wheat ales, but it is a very enjoyable, approachable ale that is perfect for hot summer days. I also appreciate the fact that the cane syrup flavor and aroma are not entirely absent, as I get a bit annoyed by beers that use non-traditional ingredients without showcasing them effectively. All in all, I would return to this one in the right setting, and if you are a fan of the style, you can do far worse.
