Floral with roasted malts and light chocolate. Dark brown to black with a quickly dissepating off white head. Floral grapefruit up front, malty sweetness with roasted malts. Sweet malt and grapefruit hop aftertaste.

Parish Brewing - Dr. Hoptagon bottled 03/05/14. Bought at brewery 6 Sept. '14
Poured from 750 ml bomber into a pint glass.

Appearance: Extremely dark coffee brown, almost black. Had a very good tan head up to 3/4 inch dissipating within 3-4 minutes leaving good lacing. My 2nd pint later had a good head that didn't last as long. Grade 3.25

Smell: Forgive my limited vocabulary but I found it to be at first slightly sweet with a noticeable toasty nut aroma. This was followed by a spicy almost resin after-scent. There may have been a bit of floral yeast in there too. Pleasant with a bit of bite. 2/3rd way through pint I picked up a bit of tannic astringency. Grade 3.0

Taste: Followed smell though toasty flavor added a bit of toasty caramel and very dark chocolate. It reminded me of 85% + dark chocolate. There was no bitter coffee flavor which I found to my approval as I am not a coffee drinker. The flavor smoothed out (even considering a tannins mentioned above) as the pint was consumed. Grade 3.25

Mouthfeel: Had a slight chewiness with a medium body and the carbonation felt low to moderate but proper for the taste. Grade 3.0

Overall: While not the "Badass" that Parish promised and not "Bursting" with bitter hops, I enjoyed the level of bitterness and the roasted malt.

To my reviewing criteria of anything rated 3 or above qualifies as "sure I'll have one" and would by it again given my mood, I give this an overall Grade of 3.25

Parish Brewing Company - Dr. Hoptagon, poured into a Lawson's tulip.

Look - Pours a low viscosity translucent brown and settles jet black with no translucence. Nice off-white foamy head that retains some and leaves a ton of lacing. Great looking BIPA.

Smell - Aroma is quite juicy hoppy! The roasted malts are faint and the hops are juicy mango citrus and passion fruit.

Taste - Taste is roasted black malts that somewhat subdues the tropical hops you can taste back behind. Finishes bitter roast. The hop profile is awesome but unfortunately the burnt malt kills it here so much it's fleeting, not uncommon for black IPAs.

Mouthfeel - Heavy-medium body with moderate carbonation. Rests real toasty charcoal. Warm malty booziness. Decent drinkability.

Overall - This is a solid offering. I wish the nose, which was amazing, was more prominent in the taste and mouthfeel, but it was drowned out by roasted malts.

A-Foam came pouring out when opened. Black with a huge tan head that leaves no lace
S-Hops is strong and has a pine aroma also
T-Roasted malt with a strong hop aftertaste that fades back to a roasted malt finish
M-medium body and high carbonation
O-This was a different beer. The foam and carbonation made me have to wait to drink this one, but once I did it turned out to be a great beer
