Notes / Commercial Description:
Parish Dr. Hoptagon is a badass Black IPA. Pleasantly offensive, this serum is bursting with bitter hops and black roasted malts. If you prefer weak, yellow beer or rainbow pooping unicorns, leave this web page and slowly back away.

A-Foam came pouring out when opened. Black with a huge tan head that leaves no lace
S-Hops is strong and has a pine aroma also
T-Roasted malt with a strong hop aftertaste that fades back to a roasted malt finish
M-medium body and high carbonation
O-This was a different beer. The foam and carbonation made me have to wait to drink this one, but once I did it turned out to be a great beer

Parish Brewing - Dr. Hoptagon bottled 03/05/14. Bought at brewery 6 Sept. '14
Poured from 750 ml bomber into a pint glass.

Appearance: Extremely dark coffee brown, almost black. Had a very good tan head up to 3/4 inch dissipating within 3-4 minutes leaving good lacing. My 2nd pint later had a good head that didn't last as long. Grade 3.25

Smell: Forgive my limited vocabulary but I found it to be at first slightly sweet with a noticeable toasty nut aroma. This was followed by a spicy almost resin after-scent. There may have been a bit of floral yeast in there too. Pleasant with a bit of bite. 2/3rd way through pint I picked up a bit of tannic astringency. Grade 3.0

Taste: Followed smell though toasty flavor added a bit of toasty caramel and very dark chocolate. It reminded me of 85% + dark chocolate. There was no bitter coffee flavor which I found to my approval as I am not a coffee drinker. The flavor smoothed out (even considering a tannins mentioned above) as the pint was consumed. Grade 3.25

Mouthfeel: Had a slight chewiness with a medium body and the carbonation felt low to moderate but proper for the taste. Grade 3.0

Overall: While not the "Badass" that Parish promised and not "Bursting" with bitter hops, I enjoyed the level of bitterness and the roasted malt.

To my reviewing criteria of anything rated 3 or above qualifies as "sure I'll have one" and would by it again given my mood, I give this an overall Grade of 3.25

Pours opaque dark brown color with 1/2 inch head. Taste is piney hops with roasted malt, light coffee, and a touch of citrus. A smooth and complex sipper. One I will revisit again.

Amazing beer. black with a little bit of head. it is almost clear for a black beer if that makes sense. the malt/hop balance is perfect. it is a very drinkable beer. i believe it is dry hopped with galaxy. i got a hint of chocolate and some roasted flavors then a earthy hop note.

i liked it a whole lot more than ghost in the machine. it's crazy how people go nuts over ghost but this one hangs around. this was my first time trying it so i know nothing about the previous batches

Pours a nice solid black color, with a dark brown finger of frothy head. Laced good, good retention, dissipated to a small frothy ring. The armor had some heft chocolate notes, with roast and a pleasant citrus and piny, resinous hop note. Similar tastes to the arma with plenty chocolate and roast, with citrus and pine hops and a medium bitterness. Body was full, had some creamy textures and a pleasant finish.

All in all, really enjoyable. More like a hoppy stout almost. Not overly hoppy or overly stout-like. Will be getting bottles when they drop too.

Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery snifter. No freshness date.

A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a full inch of dark tan head that retains very well before reducing to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of bubbly surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a thick ring behind.

S- Assertive hop aroma has big notes of citrus and pine plus a nice backing of chocolate from the dark roast. A bit of booziness sneaks in but doesn't hurt the overall profile. Also some caramel and coffee.

T- Flavor is a bit more medicinal as the hops clash with the malt and show no sign of the citrus or chocolate that's in the smell. That said, it is still smooth and has equal parts roast and bitterness. It's just not as invigorating in the taste as it is in the aroma. Alcohol is fairly well hidden and there's traces of vanilla sweetness.

M- Creamy and robust with medium carbonation and a full body.

O- A decent stab at a Black IPA but, like other Parish offerings, it falls a bit short in the flavor department.

12 oz. bottle born on 8-27-15. Poured into a pint glass. Color is a deep dark brown with small tan head that slightly stays around during the entire beer. Smells of roasty malts, citrus and tropical hop notes. Taste follows with a beautifully complex balance of dark roasted malts and citrus/tropical notes of orange peel, pineapple, and a lingering bitterness at the back of the tongue. The feel is smooth, creamy, medium carbonation keeps this beer alive. At 100+ IBUs and 7.5% abv this is a damn good Black IPA that is extremely drinkable.
