A-Foam came pouring out when opened. Black with a huge tan head that leaves no lace
S-Hops is strong and has a pine aroma also
T-Roasted malt with a strong hop aftertaste that fades back to a roasted malt finish
M-medium body and high carbonation
O-This was a different beer. The foam and carbonation made me have to wait to drink this one, but once I did it turned out to be a great beer

Pours a nice solid black color, with a dark brown finger of frothy head. Laced good, good retention, dissipated to a small frothy ring. The armor had some heft chocolate notes, with roast and a pleasant citrus and piny, resinous hop note. Similar tastes to the arma with plenty chocolate and roast, with citrus and pine hops and a medium bitterness. Body was full, had some creamy textures and a pleasant finish.
All in all, really enjoyable. More like a hoppy stout almost. Not overly hoppy or overly stout-like. Will be getting bottles when they drop too.

Poured into a Funky Buddha Brewery snifter. No freshness date.
A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a full inch of dark tan head that retains very well before reducing to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of bubbly surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a thick ring behind.
S- Assertive hop aroma has big notes of citrus and pine plus a nice backing of chocolate from the dark roast. A bit of booziness sneaks in but doesn't hurt the overall profile. Also some caramel and coffee.
T- Flavor is a bit more medicinal as the hops clash with the malt and show no sign of the citrus or chocolate that's in the smell. That said, it is still smooth and has equal parts roast and bitterness. It's just not as invigorating in the taste as it is in the aroma. Alcohol is fairly well hidden and there's traces of vanilla sweetness.
M- Creamy and robust with medium carbonation and a full body.
O- A decent stab at a Black IPA but, like other Parish offerings, it falls a bit short in the flavor department.

On-tap at The Barley Oak as part of their LA Beer Week Event. Served in a standard shaker pint glass.
Appearance: Poured a jet black with a thin brownish head that fades relatively quickly, nice lacing and retention along the sides of my pint glass.
Smell: Hoppy up front with some piney and floral notes, a touch of citrus. Not very roasty as black IPAs often tend to be. Solid aroma overall.
Taste: Up front with hop bitterness, followed with a nice touch of chocolate which I didn't catch as much in the nose. Definitely some piney hop taste but a nice balance with roasted malt and chocolate.
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation without being too filling. Nice balance between sweetness and happiness, and drinks more like an IPA.
Overall: Very solid beer that I'm looking forward to seeing in bottles soon. Drinks more like an IPA than a stout, which is what I like in this style.

A - Pours a black body with a dark khaki head that really stays around. Great lacing and retention.
S - The piney hops and malty backbone definitely battle for attention. A chocolate smell does rear its head.
T - The taste really follows the nose to me. Just a pleasant mix of piney hops, roasted malts and a bit of chocolate.
M - Medium bodied and medium to full carbonation. Creamy texture with a wet finish.
O - Solid offering here. This style is the best of both worlds, IMO.

Going into any "Black IPA", I'm always excited to see if it sells its hop character and uses the dark grains to accent dryness and bitterness. Or if the ale beefs up its dark malt taste to more resemble a hoppy Porter. Where there's nothing wrong with either, the former really wins over my taste buds! Question: will this beer go there?
Dr. Hoptagedon opens with a very dark and creamy pour. As the ale settles into the glass, its body gleems with seemingly clear opaqueness as the ale casts an onyx-like dark brown sheen. The beer's foam billows to the top with a tall column of sand-stained head. Slow to separate, its froth is slow to settle as well, sticking to the glass with clumping lace. Its a strong appearance overall.
Its balanced scent is half hops and half malt. As the nose if first stricken by pine, citrus pith and fresh cut grass; that's all quickly followed with bold coffee, dark chocolate and heavy toast. It promises to be just as much porter as IPA along with some vegetal astringency, so we'll see...
And that balance of malt and hops continue in taste. But on the palate, its the burnt caramel, heavy toast, Breakfast Blend coffee, bittersweet chocolate, walnuts and husky wood taste that take hold first. Its growing middle palate introduces its hop character- first leading with the pith of grapefruit, orange and grape seed. Then comes the bitterness as the ale turns piney, sappy, and deeply resinous. A lasting earthy and vegetable tone of freshly chopped grass and burnt embers conclude the taste as the sweetness fades evenly throughout.
Medium-full in body, its porter structure is slow to release as the ale really prefers its creamy and roasty underpinnings. Its reluctant transition toward dryness is slow and reveals flavors of roast, burnt wood, light ash and burning pine cones before its sticky bitterness sets in. Finishing malty-dry, the ale trails with alcohol warmth and continued roast.
Although the ale has a lot going for it, I expected that at some point that the beer would talk me off of the fence and allow me to decide whether it wants to be an IPA or a Porter. But it never does. Where balance is its finer attribute, its also its hindrance. But I gotta say, I don't do nearly enough drugs to fully appreciate what they're trying to do with their label art.

A - Dark with a nice tan head, looks really nice in the glass
S - Toasted malt and hops are the first thing that hits you. Smells like a Black IPA should.
T - Very nice, chocolate, rich malt, and a slight bitterness from the hops. Best tasting beer Parish brews.
M - Medium and creamy
O - Fantastic Black IPA that can hold its own against Wookey and SSR, imo. Hopefully more people in Louisiana or outside the state get a chance to try this.
