Served on nitro into a pilsner glass at the Spiderhouse in Austin, Texas. Cost was $5.00 USD. Expectations were high; this is one of my favourite styles. Spiderhouse claims to be the only place in Austin that gets this beer. Reviewed from notes.

A: No bubble show was present when it was served. The best beers in the style have a bubble show, especially when on nitro. I'm a bit disappointed.

Pours a gorgeous soft creamy head. Great creaminess and thickness. Good retention - about 4-5 minutes. Perfect even lacing coats the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

Body colour is an opaque solid black. No yeast particles are visible.

Looks good for the style overall.

Sm: Cream, dark malts, chocolate malt, roasted barley, maybe oak? A muted aroma but a pleasant one. Below average in terms of strength.

No yeast or hop character is detectable, nor is any alcohol.

T: Lovely roast and cream blend together seamlessly in classic Irish Stout fashion. Dark malts, chocolate malts. A kiss of oak. There's a buried vague hazelnut note. Great cohesion, but it's not quite a gestalt flavour profile. Good balance. Not the most complex Irish Stout I've had, but it's got nice subtlety. Good layering.

Above average depth of flavour. Nice duration and intensity of flavour; it's to style.

No yeast character, hop character, or alcohol comes through in the taste.

Mf: Creamy, smooth, wet, and soft. Has a great full body and appropriate thickness. Has a solid strong presence on the palate. Comfortable and approachable. Well carbonated. Silky. The creaminess is a highlight. The texture complements the taste very well, even coming off somewhat custom-tailored to it. It's a good marriage of mouthfeel to flavour. Good execution.

Not hot, oily, gushed, or harsh.

Dr: Very drinkable. I'd definitely get this again. Fairly priced as well. A solid nitro stout from Circle, and a beer that makes me want to try more of their offerings. I'll be revisiting this one for sure. Tasty stuff. This is consistent with the quality of the stouts I drank when I lived in Ireland.

Pitch black in appearance with a dense dark brown head. Looks like an imperial stout! Smells strongly of fresh ground coffee beans. Taste is that of extremely dark chocolate, followed by just a touch of sweetness trying to balance, then smokiness in the finish. Lives up to the title of dry stout. Thin mouthfeel, watery carbonation. Overall a decent stout, though I would prefer either more malt or less roast. A bit too dry for me.

Found at Lovejoys in Austin, Texas this stout is a solid black color with a hint of brown and a whispy white-brown head. Lacing is minor. The aroma is also pretty vague. Sort of a flat coffee molasses, not much to go on. The tongue gets a quick bite of bright coffee and yeasty lemon hop. Quite bitter and a bit angry but easy enough to get used to. It’s hard to define the bitterness here, maybe some charcoal and deep coffee grounds like one can often expect from a stout, but it seems a bit one dimensional in the flavor category. It has hearty carbonation, a bit much I think, very tingly feel in a fairly light bodied brew for a stout. A bit soda-like. Drinkability is reasonable depending on your tastes. It’s a pretty acrid, agressive bite here but it was doable for a try. I’d drink it again but I don’t think this would translate to a universally loved stout. Glad I had it but probably not a crowd pleaser.
