On tap at the Draught House.

The beer pours a hazy straw color with a white head. The aroma has a lot of rye in it as well as some citrus notes - mainly lemons and oranges. The flavor follows suit. There is a lot of lemon and biscuit malt notes. The rye is present, but is fairly subtle. There is also some wheat and orange notes which add to the beer's complexity. Thin mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Nice beer.

Light golden color. Not a strong smell at all. You can smell the booze but they are very weak. No strong hoppy or floral notes. Taste is more bitter than hoppy. Mouth feel is very bubbly and frothy. Not a bad beer but not a great beer. Would drink it again if purchased for me. But wouldn't order in my own.

(from notes)

Had this on tap at the brewery on 6.2.12 (launch day.) Full name is Wryteous Rye-Wheat IPA.

Look- Hazy orange-brown, finger and a half of head that stuck around for a bit, not much in the way of lace. Interesting tangerine glow, quite opaque.

Smell- Graham cracker, sharp rye twang, and flour. Don't know that I've ever really registered "flour" before when smelling a beer, but it's got a distinctly wheat-y scent that isn't quite breadlike.

Taste- Comes off like what I would imagine a hoppy weizen with an unusual yeast strain would be. Interesting balance, on-again-off-again nondescript dry fruity character mixes it up with sourdough bread and recently split pine rounds. Not quite sure what to make of it, although I'd be more impressed if the adjunct character wasn't so prominent.

Mouthfeel- Medium-to-full body, moderate carbonation. Very textured, definitely unfiltered, and leaning towards sludgy. Full-bodied hefe feel. Crisp on the sip, mildly dry finish.

Overall- Maybe it was the heat, but I wasn't really feeling this brew at the tasting. It's complex and interesting, to be sure, but also a bit heavy-handed with the adjuncts and I'd have much preferred a "cleaner" feel all-around, particularly in something marketed as an IPA. Certainly an interesting take on the Rye IPA theme, and I'll definitely try it again, but wouldn't bend over backwards to seek it out.

Note: I probably would have rated this beer higher overall if it wasn't marketed as an IPA, as it didn't look, feel, or taste anything like I anticipated. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I'd say it's more of a "hoppy American rye weizen" than an IPA. +1 for effort and something new, -1 for style/marketing.

A: Medium golden and very cloudy - almost opaque. In the right light, it almost glows. Excellent head retention and lacing.

S: Nice mix of citrus from the hops and the spicy/sour characteristic of rye.

T: At the same time refreshing and full-bodied. I found the rye to be less present in the taste than in the aroma. The lemony hops are the primary flavor here.

M: All the suspended yeast contibutes a slight chalkiness which I did not particularly care for. But the carbonation was nice to cut through it. Finishes pretty clean.

O: My favorite beer I have yet tried from Circle. A creative combination of several styles which showcases the brewer's familiarity with ingredients. Will drink again!
