Appearance: Poured from a bottle that has been sitting in my cellar for years, the first thing I notice is a burst of pressure followed by an all foam pour; I pour the second fill more carefully but there is just a load of foam on top of the fudge brown liquid; I'm going to give this a "4" as it was probably fine when I should have had this beer

Smell: Chocolate and grain

Taste: Chocolate forward with a bready character underpinning; modest bitterness builds; the finish is oxidized but still drinkable

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with high carbonation

Overall: Probably a decent beer in its day, I am going to give this one the benefit of the doubt

Picked up a bomber from MB Liquors in Ocean Shores, WA on 5-17-19 for $3.99. No bottling date; consumed on 5-20-19. I agree with the last reviewer as this is now just "Oatmeal Stout" with no reference to Caboose BUT the ABV and IBU's are the same.

Beer poured black with a very nice tan head that is leaving lacing behind.

Initial whiffs were nice, of chocolate and coffee. Later the nose was faint roasted malts.

Taste is notes of coffee and light roast with some light chocolate over a moderate malt base. Finish is balanced.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and pretty smooth.

Overall an okay representation of the style. Not a bad deal for a $4.00 bomber. Not sure how old this is...

I wouldn't dump this one at a party - but I wouldn't buy it again either.

Not sure I have the caboose oatmeal stout by American. Different label. White and grey and just named oatmeal stout. ABV is the same. And no other oatmeal stout matching it is listed. Website doesn't list the caboose and lists a midnight ride oatmeal stout now.
Look: looked like motor oil while pouring. a nice 3 finger head in the Duvel tulip glass. Head was a medium brown dense foam. big bubbles in the foam
smell: slight new plastic smell on first pour that wasn't enjoyable. Hints of maple oatmeal as it rested. some bitter dark chocolate notes.
taste: bitter chocolate, acrid bitterness on the finish. not pleasant. Burnt malt. Taste is best in the middle where i got a milk chocolate, malt, toffee, and oats.
Feel: average for an oatmeal stout. a little lighter than I would like for my stouts.

Poured into a mug, the appearance was a sturdy mostly dark black color with a finger's worth of white foamy head that slid off at a moderate pace. Some light lace ran here and there.
The aroma captured a nice blend of sweet to roasted cocoa beans subtly coming across like rich milk chocolate as it warms. Light sweetness from some black licorice (wishing the spicy tones of it would have come out, though) and a slight earthy to dark toast coming out on the back end.
The flavor was moderately sweet with the roasty tones coming out nicely. Once again, the black licorice sweetness is there. Slight aftertaste of the dark toast along with the cocoa bean sweetness.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied and very smooth making for a pretty good session. Light sweet oats slide along on my tongue nicely. ABV felt on par. Carbonation felt good. Nicely done smooth to roasty finish.
Overall, very nicely done oatmeal stout well worthy of coming back to if I could get it again.

22 oz. bottle:

Pours black with a creamy light brown head with good retention, leaving trailing lace.

The smell is of rich chocolate, dark earthy notes, mildly roasted coffee.

The taste is of chocolate, some brown sugar and dark earthy notes/licorice. Finishes with a roasted bittersweet character.

Smooth - medium-to-full bodied.

A fairly rich, solid oatmeal stout with a smooth texture, nice chocolate character and a balanced finish.

22 oz bottle

Pours a solid black body with a tan head. Good retention and lacing

Fairly prominent smells of cocoa, chocolate and coffee .Very nice !

Started to taste like it smells... but there is a big bitterness here that overpowers the taste and lingers as an aftertaste.

Full feel

Overall; Smell is really nice and I wrestled with giving it a 4 for smell... But it seems like this brewer wanted to put a bitter spin on an oatmeal stout. I am a big fan of the bitter... but not in an oatmeal stout. I prefer a sweeter oat meal stout.... it might work for my beer drinking brothers and sisters that crave the bitter (even in an oatmeal stout)

Dark rich pour, with creamy head. Initially strong chicory bitterness but warms up to a very solid but not outstanding Oatmeal Stout. Like most good stouts it needs time to breathe.
