This is a tiny spot. Parking sucks, and it can be difficult to get a seat. First off, the people here will do anything they can to get you a seat at the bar or a table, reservations now available on yelp as well. Call a head of time, or give them your name as you walk in. They will call you whenever they have an open spot.
Once you get in, that is it. You will never want to leave. An all wood bar along the left, with a handful of high top tables, and a few seats outside. All wood accents, and just very warming and welcoming. An open kitchen as well. Which is always a tricky thing, but everyone here is so professional it is amazing. Not only professional, but they all seem to have fun.
The beer selection is minimal, but very nice. 8 taps that rotate. I just enjoyed Live Oak Dopplebock, which is excellent. Hops and Grain, 512, Firestone Walker as well. A decent, but not exceptional bottle selection. Typical mix of locals, national brands, and quality imports. Certainly no the best selection around, but if every place had this I would be happy.
Obviously the real attraction here is the food and service. I had Beef tongue which was immaculate, lamb sausage outstanding, duck and foie gras amazing. Really not all the expensive either. I have paid much more for much less quality.
People can rave about the food all day long, though for me, what puts this place over the top is the attention to detail and the incredibly welcoming staff. They want to talk with you about the menu, beer, and wine. They want you to have the best experience possible. Above all, they want people to just try something out of their comfort zone. Be it food or alcohol, and they are very glad to help you find that special something that makes the experience that much more memorable. An awesome, unpretentious spot that might be one of my favorite restaurants anywhere.

A - I hate the seating arrangement at Barley Swine. I don't want community seating. I don't need to make new friends. Also, there is very limited seating, so you are forced to sit with people you don't know.
Q - Everything here is top notch.
S - Some of the best service you will ever encounter. Every wait staff member is knowledgeable about both the food on the menu, as well as, what beers go well with the different items.
S - Very nice selection for an upscale dining place and although they have a limited number of taps they are all quality. They also have a decent bottle selection.
F - The best food you will ever have at a place that serves good beer.
If you've got the money to spend and are more social than me, there is no better place in Austin for amazing food, paired with good beer.
