I don't hand out 5s that often, but I really am at a loss as to what The Commons could have done too much differently to improve upon Flemish Kiss.

The beer pours perfectly: clean and clear, with a fluffy head like Cumulus Clouds. It lingers to the very last sip, all the while clinging to the edges of the glass with a perfect lace.

The nose is amazing with aroms of peaches, sherry, apples, and funk. These flavors all come through again in the mouth, but are perfectly balanced. Also making appearances are subtle floral flavors (rose hips?). With an excellent effervescent mouthfeel to boot, this is one supremely crafted beer.

It's certainly a unique beer: an American Pale Ale meets Brett. But what The Commons does magnificently with this brew is keep everything within reason; there is even a certain simplicity to the beer. The brett is there, don't get me wrong, but it's not muscling its way to the center. Rather, it's perfectly balanced with the citrus hops and a clean, malt finish, that makes this beer truly something to behold.

Highly, highly recommended.

750mL bottle poured into a tulip. Thanks to Jason for the bottle!

(A)- Pours a hazy orange amber color. Produced a huge white fluffy head with great retention. Plenty of clumpy lacing too.

(S)- A super dry Brett funk meets lots of earthy hay/straw. It is really super dry with just the right amount of that earthy funk. Extremely subtle lemon/orange citrus.

(T)- I like the combination of a solid pale ale (light pine bitterness and citrus with mildly sweet malt base) meeting this bone dry, earthy hay/straw Brett funk on the finish.

(M)- A great carbonation level and balance. The Brett funk seems to almost hide any bitterness the base is putting off and replaces it with this awesome dry earthiness that feels and tastes so natural without and medicinal qualities.

(O)- A great idea that is completely successful in each way I look at it. I look forward to trying more from this brewery.

Bottle from Fonduevoodoo in CanBIF Spring 2014.

A - Gusher to start. In the glass it's a nice cloudy burnt orange colour. Two fingers of thick white head on top with strong carbonation. Great lace wall and a half finger of retention.

S - Peach, funk, vinegar, hay. Quite a lovely and complex aroma.

T - Fruity, yeasty and tart, but the tartness is restrained, yet not in a bad way. Tart, hay, dusty, fruity, less acidic than the aroma. This is pretty nice stuff because it walks the line between funky, yeasty, and fruity. The Brett profile is subtle, but present and very complimentary to the profile of the Belgian Pale.

M - Strong carbonation, medium creamy body and a dry/Bretty finish.

O/D - This was much better than I was expecting. Pleasantly tart, yet not overpoweringly so. This does a good job of playing all angles and not doing any of them too aggressively to make a nice, drinkable Belgian-style pale. Well done.
