one of my favorite beers at what the funk last night, a festival full of nothing but the best beers out there, and this to me was one of the most inspired and memorable. havent had much from the commons, just the urban farmhouse, which i loved, but this totally took me by surprise. a dark strong ale with cocoa nibs and cherries, apparently aged in rum barrels. the color is a murky medium brown, lots of viscosity and not much head at all. the smell is incredible though, i get the barrel and the chocolate first, its dark chocolate, earthy and a little bitter, and the barrel adds some vanilla and spice to a strong dark ale base. belgian yeast is suggested, but i dont get a lot of yeast character from this. there too much else going on really. the flavor is also barrel and cocoa forward, while the cherries play a supporting flavor role. tart for a second and fading into a sweeter finish, but this beer is impressively dry for how big it all is. slippery smooth, but pretty thick in texture, lacking maybe a little carbonation, but i like it this way, and when it warms up even just a little bit, it really opens up. i have got to get my hands on a bottle of this, as the several pours i enjoyed last night have got my palate wanting for more of this beauty. very good execution with all these ingredients. again, one of the winners of a great beer night for me.

Bottle: Poured a dark burgundy color ale with a large off-white foamy head with light retention. Aroma of sweet dry fruits, with some light chocolate notes and some bourbon/vanilla notes. Taste is a complex mix of chocolate, sweet dry fruits notes, light molasses, some residual sugar notes and some bourbon and vanilla notes. Body is about average with good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Intriguing experiment with great flavours but lacking some cohesion.
