750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Bright deep pink body. Huge white head. Settles to a thick collar.

Smell - Wacky. Very phenolic. Bananas. Light berry fruitiness in the back end. No acidity that I can tell.

Taste - Sweet berry fruit up front. Lots of banana phenols. Tartness in the middle that dies down again and finishes sweet and fruity again.

Mouthfeel - High carbonation. Light body. Very light sourness.

Overall - Strange beer. Not one I'd be interested in trying again.

New stuff from Commons always has my interest. This one is only on-tap at The Commons at this time. The description on the chalk board is very simple; "Sour Ale w/Black Currants". From what I gathered, the base is similar to Urban Farmhouse with a good dose of spelt. It was soured using Nancy's Yogurt from Eugene.

Vibrant looking beer looks very similar to pomegranate juice cut 50/50 with club soda. Thin fizzy white head recedes quickly to a wisp ring. Gotta love that color!

Smell is a little muted, but it's pure lactic with a splash of of the fruit. Who doesn't like lactic?

Again, very lactic in the taste with a splash of the fruit. Kinda grapey after the swallow.

Thin, spritzy, and dry. Make a toast with this in a flute.

Another winner guys, you continue to impress.

Quick review from written notes.

Bottle was a slow gusher. Poured a dark orange and showed some spotty lace with lasting surface coverage, well carved based on the visual.

Fruit salad and plummy esters in the nose, almost a hefe yeast banana quality.

Sharply sour with a clean finish, some fruity yeast esters linger in the background. There's a disconnect from the intense fruity complexity of the aroma and the simple, sour taste. Overall it's ok, but wouldn't seek it out.

Picked up a 750 of this at Bier Thirty in Bown last week for a very reasonable $13ish... Pours with a short lasting white head... the brew is very pretty, slightly hazed dark pink, almost purple hue. The tannic and tart currants are more than present... lactic without being overdone... the berries are the big player... don't think this saw any time in wood, instead it just lets the bugs and the currants play... I really like this one, simple but not a "training wheels" sour... Light bodied with plenty of carbonation makes this one finish pretty fast.. I wish Boise saw a more than a couple of cases.

750ml Bottle
Gusher. Carbonation likely 3.5+ volumes. Head has large bubbles resembling soda or shampoo foam. More than cloudy or hazy, leaning toward murky. Tart with a bit of black current. Overall, rather one dimensional and disappointing. 10 minutes in the glass and the carbonation still to the point where a sip explodes into more than a mouthful. Perhaps a bad bottle but no indications other than carbonation.

Nice color, pinkish and hazy. good carbonation, head doesn't stay. Nice refreshing sour taste but barely feel the currents and not very complex. Refreshing, but I bought this in fall and it clearly would have been a better summer drink.
Overall a nice beer but nothing exceptional.

750ml : tulip

Pours a clear, bright pinkish red with a foamy, very lightly pink tinged white head.

Lots of lactic tartness upfront, with a definite fruity backing from the currants. Has slight nutty, almost woody finish that I think comes from the spelt that is used in the malts.

Medium body, fizzy, foamy active carbonation.

A very well done sour ale. Not a lot of complexity, just a solid lactic base with fruity currant highlights.

A - Pours a cloudy dark pink-purple with a fizzy light pink head that fades fast.

S - Spices, currants and I get some sweet fruits - raspberry almost.

T - Light tartness, subtle spices, Nice!

D - Good carbonation with a light body.

O - Light, tart, nice fruit and spice balance.

750mL into a tulip. Pours a bright cranberry that's a close match to the color on the label w/ a 2-finger pink head, lively carbonation.

Aroma is fruity and acidic, a blend of berries and citrus.

Taste is likewise fruity and lactic, with a grainy crushed aspirin quality. Sourness has a sharp bite to it, and there's also a metallic aftertaste. I'm not crazy about this.

Mouthfeel is light, crisp, refreshing. High carbonation gives it a zing. Dry oaky finish.

Overall, not my favorite beer from The Commons. I might just be sensitive to that crushed aspirin taste as this is the second beer in a row I've had where I detected it. Not sure if it's a by-product of the Brett fermentation, but it detracts from the beer.

Thanks to jmgrub for sharing this one at Tieman's tasting.

Pours a hazy light red with a foamy reddish-white head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour and tart with malt, grain, funk, and fruit aromas. Taste is much the same with grain and slightly sour fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an above average beer that is decent but seems fairly unrefined in my opinion.

Huge thanks to Duffy for sharing.

A - Poured into a nice tulip a story nice ruby red grapefruit hue, super murky pink with s thin white blanket that leaves thin head.

S - Aromas of tart funky horse blanket. Loads of black currants, juicy and tart, super appealing.

T - Taste is incredibly sour, loads of black currants, tons of wheat and sour berries. This is delicious! So much lacto cream.

M - Mouthfeel is excellent, very carbonated and crisp. Wonderful.

O - Overall this was a wonderful beer, tons of fruit and tart.

A: Poured sordove a pinkish color with a small fizzy white head

S: For some reason I got big raspberries on this, little cherry, some tartness but that's about it.

T: Taste provides more raspberries, stinging tartness, some funk and wood. I did pick up the currants initially and they seemed to play a pretty strong role on the flavor profile

M: Nice, dry, well carbonated

O: Pretty good overall. Probably my favorite Commons beer so far.

On tap at The Commons.

A: Cloudy body that's bright fuchsia. Head recedes into scant white bubbles.

N: Currants, some lactic acid, lemon zest, grapefruit, marionberry. Raspberry, straw, and floral elements. I'd like this to come through a bit more on the nose rather than the tongue, though.

T: Tart and slightly sweet. Has a lot of floral elements and it's definitely enjoyable.

M: Nice and light. Well carbonated.

O: Really good beer to start the night. Doesn't overextend the palate, and I'd readily buy bottles if available.
