served on-tap @ Conrad's Alehouse, Liberty, MO, into a pint glass
Pours a light orange color. Not exactly what I'm used to seeing from a Marzen. Very little head, but that's on the bartender more than anything.
The aroma hits all of the notes that a beer of this style should. It's got a nice, nutty malt background and some green, steely hops to balance it. A clean, malt-forward lager is what you think of when you smell this beer.
And that's what you get. Old School Oktoberfest is among the best U.S. Marzenbiers I've ever had. What's key here is the depth of malt flavor. It's all very nutty -- all of the malt flavors register as nutty -- but it isn't a single note. The nuttiness changes, evolves, from the initial sip through the finish. There's just enough noble hop presence to lend the sweetness some needed cutting edge.
The body is perhaps a touch thicker than I'd prefer for a lager like this, but overall it works well to carry its deep malt flavors. This is a really lovely Marzen. Drink it if you can find it.

This beer has a lovely copper color. It is not as dark as a lot of American Octoberfest beers. It does not look heavy or dense.
The smell is very dry. it is not overpowering at all. it smells like a traditional Marzen style homebrew beer, not sweet.
The taste is very dry. the malts come through in a clean pleasant way. low hop profile allows for the malty, but not sweet malt flavor. It has the dry taste that I get from saisons. I would love to know the type of yeast that they use.
Mouthfeel is light, making this an easily drinkable beer.
Overall I really like this beer. It is easy to drink and it is not sweet at all. I am not a fan of sweet beers, and find this to be a welcome relief to many of the sweet Octoberfest beers I encounter.
