My boy Jones borrowed a power washer from the engineering manager where we work. We took it back after work one afternoon (very warm early summer day), and, being British, he had to invite us in for a beer (the Brit's are so nice). He served us a Lil' Helper (his favorite beer) in a pint glass. The beer looked very appealing, but it lost it's appeal to me very quickly! Now, I thought this was God awful, but Jones liked it okay. I have since had other IPA's in an attempt to "expand" my horizons, but I can't stomach it. To me, it has a 'skanky-beer' taste to it. One thing about it though - that high ABV sure did help things! Hell, after we left, my boy Jones had to go buy another six-pack! I bought myself a Jack Daniels and Diet Coke pre-mixed drink (pint aluminum bottle) in order to get the taste out of my mouth!

I love some of Mother's Brewing Company's other brews (and we are Missouri boys), but I won't purchase this one again...I guess I am not sophisticated enough for the IPA crowd!

Poured from a bottle into a shaker. Generous off white head, lacing throughout tasting. A deep golden/orange liquid fills my glass...clear but deep.

Citrus orange peel on the nose. Some light floral melds with a hint of pine...a touch of sweet malty bread finishes it off.

First swallow...perfect carbonation, a heavy mouth feel that isn't thick but layering flavor across my tongue. The sweetness of mandarin orange blends effortlessly with a hint of the bitterness of grapefruit and the subtle notes of pine. A quick finish follows...the hoppy dryness is overcome by a creamy sweet honeysuckle burst.

At 7% this is an incredibly smooth drinking IPA. Great hop profile dances with the sweetness of honey and bread...a really easy beer to swallow, clean and refreshing. I will buy again and look forward to more beers from Mother's.

This is my favorite beer because it's a great IPA, creates the perfect mood, and doesn't screw you over. That sums it up nicely, but I'm required to get to 250 characters, so I'll add that I don't have any investment in this company and never have, and I don't work for them and never have. My motivation for rating this beer is largely that I'd like to see it become more popular so I can buy it at more bars. My other motivation is to help other beer lovers find good beers.

The Lil' Helper is a very weak IPA and generally poor quality beer.

With a rich burnt orange color and a good head, Lil' Helper deceives visually what its sub-par performance on the tongue quickly reveals. This beer is virtually flavorless, which may be exactly what Mother's was going for but which leaves the patron unfulfilled.

12 oz bottle. Pours hazy light golden amber with a medium creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is biscuity malts and sugary candied tropical fruits and a little resiny hops.

The flavor is sweet vegetal biscuity malts and some ripe tropical fruit with a resiny grassy hop finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, an OK IPA. I don't really care for the mix of flavors.

Mothers Lil’ Helper pours to an amber/orange color with a nose that is citrus- like and floral with some notes of caramel. The foam level looks nice and it leaves a good deal of lacing as you drink.

Tasting this beer reveals a citrusy flavor with orange and grapefruit sharing the spotlight. But there is more than just citrus- there is also a bready component, a little bit of dough, some piney malt, and leafy bitterness in the finish.

This beer isn’t quite the hop- bomb I was expecting, but it is still a very nice IPA in its own way. There is enough complexity to make it interesting and enough moderation to make it appealing to many who sample. It’s not an amazing IPA, but certainly good enough to warrant a sample.

Short bottle, poured into a 20 oz snifter. Pretty burnt orange / copper color, with a rich, soapy head about 1/2" high. Persistent, soapy lacing with a pleasant, though slightly astringent nose. Featured a nice contrast between a rich mouth feel and a crisp flavor - a very nice sensation. In spite of the thick texture, this beer was begging to be knocked down quickly. This beer is a terrific addition to the local market, and I will definitely purchase again.

Picked this up on a trip through Kansas City. Tasted 22 February 2013.

Pours a medium orangey amber, clear. Half finger of whitish head, okay retention, nice lacing. Not bad, nothing special.

Smell is faint and totally lacking in hop pop or bite. This is an IPA? Could have fooled me. Mild caramel malt background is most of what I get, with a very thin layer of citrus on top.

Tastes like a bland pale ale with a dash of bitter. It's a thick bitterness, weighing down my tongue. Other than that, it's grainy and slightly sweet. Okay; kinda dull.

Feel is fine. Medium-bodied, carbonation swelling up with loads of little bubbles, then drifting away like a receding wash of wave on the beach. Fine stuff.

This is one of those blah IPAs that I think many breweries crank out to fill the style checklist. Not impressive in any way, but I suppose I can tell from the taste that it's an IPA, and it doesn't taste bad. Not one I'd look for again, though, with so many more hop-forward and tastier ones around.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 11/8/2012. Pours slightly hazy orange amber color with a nice 2 finger dense cream colored head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of tangerine, grapefruit, orange zest, floral, orange rind, pineapple, bread, light honey, and herbal earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of hop notes. Taste of tangerine, grapefruit, orange zest, floral, orange rind, pineapple, pine, bread, honey, and herbal earthiness. Fair amount of piney citrus bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, pineapple, floral, citrus rind, bread, pine, light honey, and herbal on the finish for a good bit. Good balance and complexity of hop notes; with a good hop/malt balance; and minimal cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a nice IPA. Good hop complexity and malt balance; and very smooth to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

Pours a clear, copper color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of pine, citrus hops, floral hops, and sweet malt. Fits the style of an American IPA. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of citrus hops, floral hops, slight pine, sweet malt, and hint of alcohol. Overall, good appearance, body, and blend, but the complexity is lacking.

New brewery to me, poured a stubby 12oz. bottle into an 8oz. cup.
Deep saturated orange color, slowly rising carb streams, a thin layer of creamy foam on the surface. A ring of lace in the glass and a patchy skim left behind after the first couple sips.

Orange citrus, biscuit and caramel malt in the aroma. Light florals.

Light hop bitterness, a little orange sweetness, caramel malt sweetness. Bitterness balances just enough, medium bodied with a medium level of carbonation. Pretty straight ahead, no frills IPA. One you've tasted before and will undoubtedly taste again. Not bad, just middle of the road.

Thanks to a buddy that brought back a box of Mother's brews from KC.

Short fat 12oz bottle pours a barely hazed gold/orange color with an offwhite rolling two finger head. Head retention is moderate and lacing is scant.

Smell cut pine, grapefruit peel, bread dough, and some funk which kind of gets in the way of what I'm after.

Good flavors of piney hops that balance out the caramel malt and bread dough sweetness. This is goes with the alcohol content and citrus nose.

I didn't expect the bigger kind of body here and the incredibly smooth feel. Very nice.

I'm impress with this beer. Gotta find more.

12oz served in a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

A - A crystal clear amber body with a moundy off-white head. Average retention with very little lacing.

S - Sweet Mandarin orange, bready malt, hints of green grass.

T - Nice caramel/toffee malt, slightly roasted, doughy bread, sweet tangerines, very light green pine in the background. The pine picks up and starts building bitterness around the edges of the tongue finishing bitter with a kiss of citrus and honey sweetness.

M - Very smooth and creamy feel, medium soft carbonation, crisp finish.

Not super complex but this is one of the smoothest drinking IPA's I've had. It was hard to drink it slow. Good all around. I would definitely drink this again.

The beer pours a golden-orange color with a white head. The aroma is full of orange citrus and biscuit malt. The flavor is a little more complex. The biscuit malt comes through up front, but the hops also are present with some orange and pine. The bitterness is fairly low, but the hop flavor comes through. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Pours a dark copper-amber, clear and crisp, with a large and lasting creamy off-white head. Nice chunky lacing in my glass.
Fresh and hoppy nose, with notes of pungent floral and citrus rind hops dominating. Balanced on the palate, with spicy (almost peppery) hops up front, moving into toffee mid-tounge, then finishing with a bit of hop bitterness.
Medium bodied. Finished dry. A nice, solid, balanced IPA, meaning a good balance of juicy hops with a strong chewy malt base.
I would buy this again and enjoy it again.

Pours from the bottle with just a bit of head, providing thin white coverage to an otherwise rosy gold, completely clarified.

Clean, floral, grapefruit juicy, some spice and even some sweetness. Pleasant, if subdued.

Juicy like many hop bombs, but with a comparitively greenish leafy bitter close.

Well-received in the mouth, with balanced carbonation and solidly refreshing.

Good, not great. Looking forward to more from these guys.

New to Kansas City, welcome Mother's! Good to have you here. Poured into a Guinness pint glass
A-looks good, nice 1 inch head, nice lacing, dark orange, a good pour.
S-could be stronger for a beer that states it is hopped at the wort and fermentation stage. Still, nice pine and citrus smell
T-very balanced and I was looking for a bit more hops, if you are looking for a smooth and balanced IPA, this is it. Reminds me of a Boulevard Single Wide IPA-very close but just different enough.
M-the 7% ABV gives this one a good mouthfeel and it finishes dry. I like it!
O-A solid IPA, I will be watching this home state brewer. They are producing a quality product. Keep them coming Mothers!

really enjoy this beer. taste a lot like a beer i brew at home. has a nice floral hop that balances out well with the malt. is not a smash your face in IPA, but rather one that can be enjoyed. very fond of this beer.

12 oz. bottle tried 11 Dec 2011. Served in the Schlafly shaker pint.

Medium sized dark beige head. Medium carbonation. Clear dark amber in color. Aroma is sweet and resiny with a touch of butterscotch. Starts sweetly orange and resiny. Citrus throughout. Medium body, moderate ethanol. Lingering citric bitter finish. Aftertaste is orangey bittersweet.

Not bad, but when SN Torpedo is available for the same price...

12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass.

Pours a dark copper-amber, clear and crisp, with a large and lasting creamy off-white head. Nice chunky lacing.

Fresh and hoppy nose, with notes of pungent floral and citrus rind hops dominating. Smells like opening a bag of C-hops from the homebrew shop. A fair dose of fresh-squeezed orange juice underneath, all help up by a barely noticeable caramelly malt base.

A good bit more balanced on the palate, with a spicy and peppery hop bite up front, moving into quick and fleeting rich toffee mid-palate, then finishing with a bit of a bruising hop bitterness that lingers. Pulpy orange juice flavor near the end.

Medium bodied and firm, almost sharp. Finishes dry and a good deal tacky and resinous. A bit of a bruiser. A nice, solid Midwest-coast IPA, meaning a good balance of juicy hops with a strong chewy malt base.

T - It tasted very yeasty with some piney bitterness. A touch of citrus zestiness and some sweet caramel.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A light to medium bodied ale with a dry, clean finish.
