Not quite English. Not quite American. Foggy Notion is a boozy, 100% Ozarks-born barley wine. Boatloads of malt give this full-bodied beauty a deep-copper color & light brown sugar flavor. Six months of aging nurtures hints of oak & stone fruit, making Foggy Notion perfect for sharing or sipping alone.

A: Pours a copper color with a huge, billowing, off-white head that filled up the rest of the glass to the brim.

S: A nice sweet aroma. I got hints of oak and sherry.

T: Not the booze bomb I would expect from a 10 percent winter warmer. No heat, the alcohol is nicely presented. It has a nicely balanced sweetness. Lots of stone fruit.

M: Medium body with even,carbonation.

O: A lovely barley wine. Very approachable, very good to sip.

Thanks to scarysun for this puce (puke?) gold-waxed 22 oz. bottle, split with my wife. There are far too few barleywines in my state. We import them. Just like warmth. And our shipment is weeks late.

The puce (definitely puke) wax is about 4/10 on the pain-in-the-ass scale. The brew is copper mixed with light red, with spare visible carbonation. Smells like the Webster American Barleywine: sweet malts, sharp bitter hops, booze, & sugar-infused stone fruit. What the hell is a stone fruit, anyways?

Foggy Notion makes me want to watch “Finding Bigfoot” for some reason. As a beer it has malts, hops, & water. I can taste all three, especially the hops, which come on like Blaine at a frat mixer. The only other hint of personality is that touch of sugary indeterminate fruit. It is frighteningly easy to drink, & should come with some kind of warning. Besides the name, I mean.

If you were trying to brew a neutral, unassuming barleywine base, this would be it. Startlingly boring. Decent enough.
