Pours an effervescent copper/brown with a thumb of tan head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Brown bread & caramel

T: Rich caramel, some nutty notes, a touch of grainyness up front. More caramel, nuttyness some leafy & herbal hops, a little booze bite, not much & serious dryness. Finshes with woody hops, dryness, a touch of grapefruit & nice caramel sweetness

MF: Rich, beefy, fairly firm carbonation, nice balance

Drinks easy for the ABV (9.6%), an enjoyable dopplesticke. Well done again Mother's!

This beer was delicious.

It was very smooth and flavorful; the nose was complex and appealing. It smelled of lots of malts. The mouthfeel was a bit bubbly, but it wasn't unsuitable for the style.

I had it on a lunch break and had a great afternoon at work afterward.

Pours a wonderful deep almost opaque brown, with mahogany highlights. Not much head, but what's there does tend to stick around awhile.

Nose is nice, with a bit of cocoa, a hint of hop, and some alcohol being the first things to garner your attention. There's a mild cigar smell here too, which is also nice. Overall, pretty inviting.

Flavor is hard to pin down on the first sip. Is this hoppy or not? Is that malt or some other fruit? A second sip starts to clarify things a bit. It's sweet up front, with a shot of bitterness that seems to ride above the sweetness rather than try to play off it. Unique in that it almost tastes like I took a sip of two different beers, one hoppy, one malty sweet, and they refused to meld in my mouth. The sweet side is almost maple syrup like, a deep, sticky sweetness that makes the beer seem even bigger than it is. That fades a bit as the hop bitterness jumps in and tries to fend it off. Eventually you realize that is, in fact, malt sweetness, just intense and in your face with its sugary goodness. Oddly not as caramelly as one might expect from a big ol' brown, with the sweet flavors seeming to come mostly from the base malts and roasted malts. The more you drink, the more balanced it becomes, which is hard to believe, as sweet as it starts. By about a third of the way through the bottle, your taste buds have figured it out, and it works, and works well. Do NOT give up on this after a sip or two. What starts out as an orchestra warming up, everyone playing over the top of one another and sounding like they have no idea what they're doing, ends up being very good indeed once the maestro takes the podium.

Mouthfeel is big and rich, with a bit of an oily coating that the hops work hard to strip away. It isn't hard to drink at all, but you won't forget each sip very quickly.

As mentioned, this starts out with a serious "WTF?" going on, but quickly falls together into a very nice beer. The flavors actually become somewhat subtle, or as subtle as a 9.6% ABV brown can be. It's sweet, but never quite crosses over into "Eddie Haskell" sweet territory. Not something you're going to slam down, but then why would you? Nicely put together, and when you taste the beer this way, it really makes much more sense why the raspberry version works so well. Worth seeking out.

Imperial version of their altbier.

A - Poured a hazy, burgundy color with a one-finger, bubbly head of foam. It left thin trails of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled malty, boozy, and grassy. It had some chocolate aromas, too.

T - The flavor was all over the place. Boozy, malty, spicy with caramel and toffee but the balance was off. It was messy.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

O - It was simply messy and unbalanced. Not awful, but it needed work.
