Holy Mole is an amber/brown colored brew with a nose that is chocolaty and spicy, mainly cinnamon. The beer is very clean and leaves no lacing at all as you drink.

This beer has an interesting flavor profile that offers up some light roasted malt, chocolate, and spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon. There is a touch of coffee as well and some caramel notes. There is other spiciness present due to the addition of peppers to the brew and it makes for an interesting flavor combination.

Holy Mole is different from the typical beer, both in flavor and appearance. The ingredients used are not like those of most beers and they combine for a one-of-a-kind taste. I’m not too thrilled with the appearance- the beer is a little too clean for me and it almost looks like a glass of cola when poured. But the flavor is better than average and helps me overlook some of the other qualities.

I don’t think I have ever tasted a beer that was brewed with cocoa nibs and peppers, but with Holy Mole in my glass, now I can say I have. It’s yet another good product from Mother’s Brewing and one certainly deserving of a try.

Darn it! What an odd beer.

The appearance is above average, the smell is fine...

Then you taste it. Hey that's not half ba.... wait... whut?

Downer of a finish when this medicinal peppery flair just dominates everything else. You can't get past it once you've reflected on the second half of that sip and it keeps eating away at you from there.

Certainly an "interesting" beer but if that's not the most assuring of attempts, you're right, it isn't.

Pours chestnut with a pinky of mocha colored head. Some lacing & head retention

S: Some spicy red pepper & pears

T: Follows the nose, plus a bit of cocoa & a touch of nuttyness up front. Spicy pepper, pears, flat cola & dryness mix as this warms. Finishes with spicyness, a touch of pear & brown sugar & figgy notes

MF: Medium bodied with slight carbonation, thins out as it warms

This was interesting & drinkable, but not too mind-blowing. Give me Ska's spicy stout any day. Probably would pear nicely with food suggested on the label, doesn't really impress by itself

Appearance: Dark amber; caramel
Smell: Spicy with hints of chocolate
Taste: Interesting mix with the cinnamon and cocoa nibs apparent, the pepper becomes apparent after a few sips, although its subdued at first
Mouthfeel- thin, could be thicker. Not a lager, but doesn't feel like an ale
Overall- a very interesting, unique and tasty beer. I'd have another (I did, in fact).

If you like experimental beers (and you live in or are visiting the midwest), you'll want to try this. It's not perfected (like Dogfish Head), but its a nice try at a Mole sauce beer (I didn't learn this until afterward). The cinnamon stands out and the peppers weren't apparent in the first sip, but they build up (this beer gets spicier as you drink it). I'd recommend it, but its not for everyone.

First review, but I had this last night and loved it and was surprised there was only one review so far.

Poured from tap a deep dark amber brown. Had a very shallow head that just slightly stuck to the glass.

It had a delicious flavor that was complex, well balanced, and to me, very drinkable. I'm a sucker for interesting beers and this was definitely one. The cinnamon flavor was very apparent, but not annoyingly so. The chocolate flavor balanced out the spice and I was left actually wanting another. I expected this to be a 1/per sitting beer, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I'll be picking this up in the store if I can find it.

Had this on tap at Blackthorn Pizza in Joplin, MO.

It pours a nice, deep brown, with a thinnish head that falls quickly, but it holds together well throughout the pint.

The aroma is a big ol' burst of cinnamon up front. A second whiff will get you some chocolate, but not much. Perhaps my olfactory senses are quick to shut down on cinnamon, but after the second sniff, I couldn't get much at all. That first shot was nice, however.

The flavor is nicely melded, with a bit of chocolate up front, coupled with the cinnamon. The pepper is very, very coy, hiding among the other, more powerful flavors, only coming out about halfway through the pint. You will start to detect just a slight hint of a burn in your mouth, then the flavor of the pepper becomes slightly more noticeable. It never really comes to the fore, especially not to the point where you're going to say "ah HAH! Pepper!", but it's there. You'll have a nice, pleasant warming sensation all through your mouth by the end of a glass of this. And through it all, there's never any doubt you're drinking a beer. It's isn't gimmicky, or sweet, or anything of that nature. It's a spiced beer, and a damn good one.

The mouthfeel seems a bit different than when they first did this back in the summer. It seems a tad thinner, which takes away from my enjoyment of the brew. I should have reviewed it back in May, but obviously didn't. Don't misunderstand, it's still a very good brew, but it could stand to be a smidgen richer and more full in mouthfeel, in my opinion.

Overall this is a fine beer. Not overwhelming with the spices, but not so faint as to leave you wondering what they were going for, either. It's obviously a molé-type beer, and it's well done. As with nearly every other Mother's product, it's well worth seeking out.

On tap at the Brewery. Pours a brown color with a small head and no lacing. Aroma of spice and cinnamon with bit of malt sweetness. Interesting flavor of cinnamon, spice and malt sweetness. Mild bitterness in the background with a fairly clean finish. Fairly medium body, smooth with a creamy texture and unique balance. Enjoyable seasonal/ special beer but not for more than one.

Pours a clear, dark brown color. 1/3 inch head of an off-tan color. Decent retention and decent lacing. Smells of sweet malt, hops, slight caramel malt, and a hint of spice (cinnamon?). Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with a low carbonation level. There is also a subtle heat from the peppers that presents itself after a few sips. Fits the style of an Herbed / Spiced Beer. Tastes of sweet malt, hint of spice, hint of hops, and a hint of pepper. Overall, decent aroma and blend, but the body is lacking in strength.

I'm really not sure which beer to review, the standout that it used to be on tap, or the shadow that they bottled.

I first had this about a year and a half ago at a beer festival the brewery attended. They brought a few special kegs, including their tap room only Holy Mole. That beer really changed my mind about the brewery and convinced me that they could make something different and really special. It was a fantastic spiced ale with a cocoa, a little pepper, and big hits of nutmeg and cinnamon. It was so good (I originally gave it about 4.25) that I tasted it two or three times and chatted with one of the brewers about how fantastic it would be to get a growler, pair with some fajitas, and move on to cheesecake for the big finale. But I never got that chance.

When the bottles came out, I was pumped. Until I tried it. It lost all the subtle (and not so subtle) spices, and went too much toward the standard pepper mole. Nothing bad, just strikingly average, but compared to what it used to be, I can't recommend it. Reminds me of some common beer knowledge, "The worst thing you can do to beer is bottle it." Maybe I shouldn't be so harsh; Mothers showed some flashes of brilliance with this originally, but they just really tripped up translating that flavor to the bottle. Maybe next time...
